Some reviews are plagued by recency bias. Not this one.
Dude that gave this show 1 star was so impressed with his soap box position he failed to realized the negative review was based on a completely false premise. He states nobody used filthy language in the 1800's around the turn of the next century. He was completely engrossed with teaching us how bad the practice would be.. blah blah blah, drivel. The fact is, modern curse words are substituted in place of words such as bugger, strumpet, bootlicker and cherry. Yeah, see, those words mean nothing to us today, but substitute them for their modern equivalents and, as the reviewer so aptly showed, they cause the same shock their predecessors did in the 1800's. So, language MUST be substituted if we are to experience the real look and feel of a period piece which 1883 IS. Language is spot on and the substitutions precise. This show is written with perfection and acted superbly. The filming is exquisite. It's unfortunate folks with soap boxes can't think through the nuances of modern cinema or television to find gems like this. My gosh, the budget to shoot this show must be immense. I mean modern western movies don't bother to spend a budget to come even half as close in filling a small town with extras and period culture like 1883. The background cast in Fort Worth alone was stagecraft to be admired. Every player told a story with the wardrobe and the ambiance alone. This sort of attention to detail should attract every sort of viewer clamoring for a great show to watch. In my very humble, though technically correct opinion, anyone giving this show a 1 star has some sort of axe to grind and its not related to the filming of 1883.

Filthy language
I do not understand why writers are poised to use filthy language in movies and lose a large portion of their audience. We stopped watching this serial shortly after the f- word was introduced at the beginning of episode 1 and we are not coming back. It is a false idea. In the old days, people did not frequently use such language, and secondly, even if they did, this is a movie - not the so-called "real" world; we do not want you to pollute our houses with such primitive filth. I love the story and the idea but we are not going to pollute our houses with nasty language that will resound in our memory. Everything has limits, and we draw the limit with obscenities. I don't care how good a story is; it must use decent language and be good for all audiences. The idea that there is something like "mature" audience is a mistake. The mature audience is created by depth of thoughts and not by filth. I am very sorry that you made a bad choice and I am sorry that Sam Elliot in his "mature" age has become quite immature.

Glorious - a visual treat
If the first two episodes are anything to go by, then this is one of the best western series to ever be shown on television or streaming media. Bravo to the cast and crew!

Again. The Ruin of a Promising Film
I was a little bit into this, and I have to say, it was pretty boring. I was hoping it was not of the caliber of film as Yellowstone, which would have been good if not for the language and gratuitous violence. This is more of the same. I will not watch something that is filled with f- bombs instead of dialogue, and swearing to impress the Godless Generation. What a fall from acting Sam Elliot has taken. It breaks my heart. Disappointed in the cast filming this. No one is so stupid to think some men probably were of that caliber, but if you cannot make a great movie using your creative thoughts and some heart, then do not bother. This is a ruin of something that once again should have been a really good film. Maybe the cast should go down the Lonesome Dove trail and see how it is done. What a disappointment and poor example to our young who are already victimized by Hollywood brutality and lack of decency. Skip to the great films of the past. And learn something better.

So Good
Excellent acting, script, scenery, ambiance. I got a little teary-eyed watching as I realized the journey and sacrifices made by ALL sides, to build this great nation. How imperfect we are as human beings and yet how beautiful. We are a patchwork quilt to be sure. Well done 1883.

unrealistic = unnecessary foul language
Why do some writers insist on filling in dialog with abusive language, which adds nothing to the story. Anger and frustration can be shown without the foul language. It's also out of character for that period in time. Too bad I couldn't watch much of it, because the series looked promising, with good actors.

Non-existent peroxide and vulgarity, and Tom Hanks ... Nuff said
Just sayin' ... And even though hair dye was invented in 1863, pretty sure the rugged frontier settlers weren't the types. Yellowstone is a cross between Marlboro man meets country music video meets Ford commercial - add in some unwatchable child abuse (Yellowstone). Some of the characters are strong, but Yellowstone is intentionally vulgar, inc w/a child. Watch a real classic western. Better for the soul. 1883 is lower IQ than Yellowstone, and fixates on the attempt to make a legend aura with the peroxide teen. Laura Engels Wilder, she is NOT. Had they cast more authentically, maybe i'd buy into it more. For me, the peroxide and gratuitous cursing f- bombs and Hanks, who is again, TOTALLY MISCAST in a western is barely to not watchable. I give 2 stars only cuz' TV needs more historical dramas. Btw, how did all those immigrants suddenly learn English?

A window into the beginning of Yellowstone
I am so excited to see the prequel to Yellowstone. Can't wait to see the reason for the Dutton's dedication to
preserving their land. Sounds like a terrific cast and story.
