Peas, pea protein, dried plain beet pulp? These are all fillers that provide no nutritional benefit to our mutts. Pea Protein is not considered a beneficial ingredient to be added to dog food. It is a by-product of pea processing and is the pure plant-based protein from Peas. A relatively small amount of Pea Protein can be used to inflate the overall proportion of protein within a dog food formula and is often one of the leading culprits of a technique called ingredient splitting.

Ingredient Splitting – Beware

Ingredient Splitting is a somewhat sinister technique employed many dog food brands including some which are considered high-quality or premium. The idea is as follows. If you split up an ingredient into some sub-ingredients, then those sub-ingredients will appear lower down on the ingredient list.

Consumers have been taught in recent years to pay attention to the top 5 or top 10 ingredients listed on dog food. This technique makes it appear as if less high-quality or nutritious ingredients such as grains, vegetables or plant-byproducts are less abundant. When in reality if all these sub-ingredients were combined they would very likely take a spot near the top of the ingredient list.

The splitting of Pea-Byproducts is one of the most common examples of this technique. Quite often a dog food formula will contain Peas, Pea Protein, and Pea Flour. This technique allows a manufacturer to vastly understate or mislead the consumer on the volume of peas present.

We are down to about 1 fart per night now, which leads to a more peaceful sleep for me since I am not waking up in the middle of the night 6 or 7 times to accuse my dogs of trying to gas me.
Kibble is good size, smells fresh and dogs finish the entire portion they are offered.

We are a bag in and no adverse reactions. I have a 10 year old boxer with a very sensitive stomach so I was really worried about switching him. I compared all of the ingredients of Wag to what I was feeding and the comparison held up, plus, Wag doesn't have a couple of questionable ingredients that the other food had (that affects kidney function). After the initial change over, the boxer has not had any stomach issues or excess gas, which was a problem with other foods.
I have 4 dogs and we are 4 for 4 for them liking this. When the bag arrived I opened it and one of the dogs actually started eating straight out of the bag, he has never done that with the other food we were feeding.
To everyone who is saying it is pricey, I am wondering what food you were feeding. A good food isn't cheap, and Wag saves me $30 per bag over what I was feeding and I feel confident feeding Wag to my fur kids. I did the research, I did the comparisons, and I am happy with Wag.

I bought this last month to try with one of my two dogs. The ingredient list looked good, and most of the reviews were favorable. I figured I’d be scientific about it and did the following test: Both of my dogs are labs and are the same age and both are in good health. I usually feed two cups of food once per day of my old food.

I took roughly a week to wean one of my dogs onto the food. I looked at my dog’s weight and stool for results. There was no change in eatin habits. Both of my dogs are labs. They scarf food like no tomorrow.

My dog that is eating this food has had consistently larger poops (which generally signifies filler ingredients that they cannot digest) and looser poops. They were so loose that they were sometimes even diarrhea. Furthermore, my dog eating this food has lost weight. (Again, filler ingredients) I have since weaned him back to his old food and everything has gone back to normal.

So, pros for this food: Cheap. That’s really about it. It’s on the same level as convenience store purina dog chow.

Cons: Lots of filler ingredients. This means you need to feed more for a dog to get the same nutrition. This basically removes “cheap” as a mitigating factor.
Makes my dog sick. Loose poop, bad gas, eating grass. This means digestive issues, and it started with this food and ended when I stopped.

Summary: Don’t buy this. Amazon needs to reformulate this food.

Very Picky Spoiled Catahoula LOVES Wag

We have a VERY spoiled, picky 2.5 year old, 60 lb. Catahoula that gets part kibble & part people food (meat/fish/sweet potatoes). Have to coax him (first with tidbits on his own fork...yes, spoiled) to eat any of his food. Tried LOTS of brands and before only one he would eat with minimal coaxing was Rachel Ray Nutrish. Although 5 lb Wag more expensive per lb., the 30 lb. bag runs about $1/lb less than Rachel Ray. Plus Wag Salmon & Lentil had about 10% more protein. When Wag arrived held out a handful. NO coaxing needed. Then, quickly gobbled down second handful and tried to get into the bag. Normally, keep his food bag on the floor. Had to put the Wag Salmon up high enough (almost 5') that he couldn't stand on his hind legs and reach the bag. Definitely, will be buying more of this. Great job, Amazon.

No, price per bag or per pound is not higher. It's just that now my dog eats more of it, so we go through more of it, and I have to buy more of it. Try the salmon. (Not you, have your dog try the salmon.)

This review is for the salmon variety (we have tried the lamb and my dog enjoys it). Unfortunately at least a third of the bag is crumbled or powder. The kibble that is whole is of high quality and passes the dog taste test (even the cat sneaks some). As others have mentioned something has gone wrong somewhere down the production or transportation line for the salmon variety. For this reason I can't recommend this product.
