I'm surprised to get a review request for this item as it's been returned... so that should set the tone for what I thought of this olive oil.

I was excited to try this "Extra Virgin" olive oil from AmazonBasics. It had generally good reviews and appeared to be a good value. As usual, shipping was fast and the item was undamaged.

The positive experience ends there though. The oil I received could not possibly be misconstrued as Extra Virgin grade. I first tried it on some fresh bread with oil and could not finish the first slice. Thinking it might have been the bread or salt, I tried sampling it from a teaspoon and nearly gagged. It had the consistency of vegetable oil, almost no smell, and an acrid taste. Thinking that my tastes could be off, I had several other people try it (without first sharing my opinion) and the response was unanimous: stay away.

It took me a while to figure out why my salad dressing tasted "off". Was the garlic old? Was it the oregano? the vinegar? Nope. It turns out this olive oil was/is the culprit. Bitter and an awful after-taste. I bought it because it was an Amazon choice. Very very disappointing. will be returning.

I'm a total olive oil snob and won't hesitate to spend over $20 on a good bottle. I lived on a farm in Tuscany for a while where we made our own olive oil. I won't usually even buy ANY oil in a plastic bottle. I know that olive oil is the most counterfeit substance on the planet and there's no way to test it. My understanding is that when they do, they use hazelnut oil, not canola oil so I can live with that for inexpensive olive oil to cook with. I figured that's what I'd get with this. But I think it's the real deal. It has that starting sweet, slightly bitter and penetrating aftertaste typical of Tuscan olive oil. I am shocked. I've gone through 4 bottles already. They've all been very very good. If they've got me fooled they've done a good job.

Great product at a great price. My best guess is this oil is two or three years old which is about right. Current harvest olive oil can be a little harsh especially early in the year.
This happens routinely with California olive oil's. People haven't figured out all of oil and it's need for time. There's a time and place for immature olive oil but most people really don't like that harsh peppery grassy flavor. Great stuff

Put my trust in Amazon and was disappointed. This oil did not pass the refrigerator test. Pure olive oil gets opaque and solidifies in the refrigerator in a few hours. This oil did not, I'm not a happy camper when an Amazon endorsed product which is touted as 100% oil is definitely not.
