Bell Bottom

 (232)6.22 h 3 min2021X-Ray13+
By the early ‘80s India had already witnessed multiple airplane hijacks. In 1984, the country was made to face another such challenge. BellBottom, a RAW Agent played by Akshay Kumar, sees through the plan and thus begins India's first overseas covert operation. An operation, lead by a forgotten hero, that went on to create one of the most defining moments for India.

Unlike this movie's treatment of Pakistan, I am going to try and be fair to this movie.

First the positives. It definitely looks great. It seems no expenses were spared on the sets. They got a lot of details (like old Dubai police cars) right. Akshay Kumar's acting is as stellar as usual. And here ends all the nice things I can say about this movie.

Now for the bad stuff and why I gave it 2 stars (and even then I was being generous). The script's intelligence is marred by very convenient coincidences peppered throughout the plot which favour the protagonist, including the most cooperative and timely sandstorm in the history of sandstorms. It begins just when it needs to and finishes the moment the covert operation ends. The enemies are all too stupid and cartoonishly evil to be taken seriously. However, that is not the worst part. Any good points this movie has is marred by the naked anti-Pakistan stance. The movie does not even try to be subtle about it. Even Pakistani biscuits are vilified. By demonizing an entire nation, this movie looks more like a raw recruitment video. Given the rising extremist Hindu and anti-Muslim fervor in India, this movie will just add fuel to the fire.

Solid thriller and entertainer

This was a solid entertaining movie. Bit slow at beginning, picks up later. Screenplay, acting, rest is great. Does a really nice job of picking up the 70s vibe in every scene. I love that Akshay does such a great job of retelling incredible true stories in cinematic form. My only comment is Akshay Kumar looks a little too old to be playing a 32 yr old super spy. Granted he looks awesome great for his age and dude can carry off a pink kurta like nobody's business, but there is still a big difference between 54 and 32. They could have made the character a bit older to make him more realistic - otherwise a younger actor like Sid Malhotra or an Arjun Kapoor would be better in these kinds of roles.

A good time pass movie. Kind of predictable. Acting was good and so was the action. However, for the setting that was late 1970's and early 1980's, the film occasionally looked somewhat modern. Akshay's hairstyle looked too perfect to be set in 1980's. Same with Vaani's looks. Unlike some other movies, where we get transported to the era where the movie's story is set, this movie does just a so-so job about doing that. I liked the story and the thrills were good too. Best part for me was Lara Dutta, unrecognizable as Indira Gandhi. Worth a watch once.

Nice movie! Fast paced, edge-of-the-seat. Not at all predictable. And very realistic! Certainly looks like based on actual events. Reminded me of other good ones such as Batla House.

Historically accurate, inspiring, hands down one of the best movies of the year. Kudos to cast and crew for keeping the story line lively and believable to the end.

Another movie casting Mr. Akshay Kumar strengthening our national pride through his art. It's not Easy to translate every aspect of a documented event, and the team has done a good work to maintain the balance. Looking forward for more such inspiring stories.

Excellent cinema based on real hijacking and rescue operation.

I really enjoyed watching this film beginning to end. This movie played out the rescue operation by indian intelligence agencies in much detail. I am very proud of indian intelligence agents who sacrifice so much for the country and its people. God bless them.
