Customer reviews

I will admit, I am a southern girl who was raised on beans and cornbread and weekend grill-outs. I have never gravitated towards fruit or nuts in my salads, I don't use a wide variety of dinnertime meal recipes nor do I stray too far outside of what is familiar to me. Yet, recently my boyfriend has been talking me into trying new things. Like spinach salad with raspberries and goat milk feta crumbles (I liked it!). So, when I was planning out a special Valentine's Day celebration for him, I decided to wander around on Amazon for some more culturally diverse treats to surprise him with. You know, to show him that I am willing to expand my edible horizons (within reason).(Call me stubborn but I refuse to try those chocolate-covered scorpions I came across in my search results).I grew up seeing pictures of pretty little marzipan fruits in holiday food catalogs but I never ordered any. During a recent trip to Atlanta, I saw some marzipan (once again in the form of fruits) in a candy store display case, which got me to thinking that I really should try it soon. But not that night. I was too busy chowing down on free fudge samples.I did not want to waste money on this sweet treat if it turned out that neither of us would really like it. So, this box of 18 marzipan for just under $9 seemed like the perfect choice to take a chance on. Some of the reviews worried me, though. Too dry, too stale, too old, too this, too that. Which left me wondering "how will I know if my box of marzipan live up to the way they should taste if I have never tried any before to compare it to?"Well, I have no answer to that question. All I can tell ya is what I have experienced just this once with this one order and hope it helps you make your own decision.Upon arrival, the box was in a large padded manila envelop. Mine arrived the very next day via USPS. I must say, I loved how quickly this package got to me. With it being the day before Valentine's Day, speedy shipping was a major bonus (I have Prime). The first thing I noticed after opening the envelop was the vibrant appearance of each and every little fruit. Very pretty! A few were stuck to the plastic lid but nothing so terribly unappealing that I would freak out over it. I actually try to only freak out over things like unexpected relatives (whom I am not entirely fond of) knocking on my front door. THAT is something to freak out over, not little sticky fruits. As you can see in one of my attached photos, one corner of the gold-colored box was damaged. Once again, nothing to get all up in a tizzy over, unless of course you are a perfectionist and wanted to give these marzipan to someone for a special occasion. In which case, one might wonder why these candies are shipped in a padded envelop instead of a sturdy box. I can understand that we all as consumers want a flawless product when we spend good money (or any money) on a thing but life has a way of reminding us that nothing is perfect. There will be damaged box corners and the such. So, we gotta learn how to lower our standards just enough to maintain our sanity. There is a gold ribbon string thingy wrapped around the corners of the box. Nice little touch of fanciness. My boyfriend ended up tying the string around his neck as a 'gold necklace'. I began calling him my pimp daddy but I won't get into that part of the experience because then I would have to describe the sultry outfit I was wearing and you aren't reading this review for such graphic details of a "what the f...?' nature. The candies themselves were interesting! For someone as adventurous as he tends to be, the boyfriend only ate one fruit, though. He said it was good, so I shall take his word for it. The texture of the fruit was soft, a little chewy, definitely not dry. Despite the few fruits that were stuck to the lid, none of the candies were sticky or gooey to the touch. Just the expected somewhat moist texture of a candy made from almond and apricot paste. The flavor reminded me a lot of some coconut macaroons I used to make as a teenager. I would put some almond extract into the batter. These marzipan reminded me of that. A strong almond extract flavor. At first, I was not sure what to think of the flavor/texture combination going on in my mouth. Trying to figure out if I liked it, trying to figure out if they were supposed to taste this certain way, etc. In the end, I guess you could say I liked them! When my boyfriend would go to the bathroom, I would lift the lid off the box and sneak a fruit out, trying to hurry up and eat it before he caught me in the act. I didn't want to worry him that I was going to spoil my appetite for our special Valentine's night dinner that he planned to fix us (we had spaghetti and spinach salad .. it was deelicious .. in case you were wondering ..).And, of course, I used to sneak my mom's candy bars from her private stash. Some habits die hard even when I know I need not sneak around anymore. I also sneak cookies from my friend's cookie jar when I go to visit. I like to think that at this point I am a pro when it comes to stealing other peoples' foods. Just enough to satisfy me yet not so much that it is noticeable. Once again, I don't think you care to read about that entire skill set I mastered over the years. This is a marzipan review! My apologies for rambling.Anywhoo ..All in all, for the price, I am happy with my purchase. The expiration date on the bottom of the box is March 2, 2021 .. so I think it is safe to say they are definitely fresh. Would I buy them again? I am not sure. If I don't buy them again, it won't be because of the quality of this company's product. It's just that I was raised on Hershey bars and peanut butter cups and only once a year did I even make those almond macaroons. But at least I did TRY these marzipan. If you have never tried them and find yourself curious about them, I definitely recommend this product. You get quite a lot and it's pretty darn cheap. If you got this far, thank you for reading my review! You are simply awesome.Happy shopping!
