Let me begin this product review with my credibility statement. I am not a professional, by any means, but purchased the Black Diamond Harness with the intent to use it for climbing and work. I currently work as a climbing instructor for a local gym and enjoy climbing as a hobby. I have taken this harness to multiple states and gyms across the Midwest. I average about 5 hours a week of use for anything from climbing to belaying patrons. I typically top rope but have enjoyed many lead and multi-pitch climbs while wearing this harness. Because of my specific consumer needs I have based this review on the following criteria: durability, comfortability, and intended customer.
The Black Diamond Harness has the comfort and feel of a $100 Petzel harness at a third of the price. It is not as light of a harness as a novice or professional climber may require. That said, I believe that this product is to be intended for beginner to intermediate climbers that demand a strong, durable, and comfortable product. It can be used for safety while climbing top rope, lead, multi-pitch, or belaying.
Some of the features that make this product so durable are the double stitching and protected gear loops. The double stitching is very strong and dependable. The loops and connecting pieces have all been reinforced to eliminate any possibility of failure. The gear loops are coated in a clear plastic that helps you easily clip carabiners and hang gear. I have, at times, had twenty plus pounds of gear on these loops and they still hold up.
I would also like to add how comfortable this harness is. I had a very large need for this because of how often I belay. I have found the harness to hold up to that comfortability standard. I have found the leg and waist cushion particularly suitable when belaying patrons for hours at a time. The materials are breathable and the waist strap is wide enough to protect the belt from digging into the climber. You can tell that time was put into the consideration of the climber’s comfort while wearing this product.
If you are looking for a comfortable harness, that won’t break the bank, this is the harness for you. If you are a beginner to novice climber that wants a safe, reliable, and versatile product, stop searching. This harness is an outstanding product for the price and I would not hesitate to purchase again.
