Carnation clearly states that this product is "wheat flour."
DO NOT BUY TO MIX WITH MILK - Not gonna happen. Even with a ninja blender, you end up with little flour globs at the bottom of the glass. They're just malt flavored flour globs...
Flavor is mildly malted, but unimpressive. Everyone screams "don't confuse with Ovaltine," but at least Original flavor Ovaltine smells and tastes like malt! (Not to mention, it mixes in milk without globs...)
If you are searching for that malt flavor, skip this stuff, except for baking (since it is so heavy in flour, it does mix well for flavored dough...)
Invest in Barley Malt SYRUP. Runs about $13-15 for 20-22 oz, and will give you unadulterated malt flavor, without added flour. It has been processed, so it is not Diastatic malt.
It is just pure malt flavor and sweetening power. Worth every penny - unlike this product.
Seems we always had a jar of malted milk around the house for making Malteds or topping ice cream~Yum! My Mother used to make a Malted Frosting for Whoopie Pies that was incredible and I wanted to recreate those memories, but, could no longer find it in any of the grocery stores :(
Thank Amazon for stocking this product and at a great price. Frosting accomplished and so dang delicious!
WHAT A LETDOWN!
Not what you remembered. In fact I can’t even taste the malt. Sugar is the first ingredient. 16gms of added sugar. For an 8oz serving. That’s almost as much as soda. And it tastes like Nestles Quick, not malted milk. If you like malteds, do yourself a favor. Get the regular stuff and add a touch of chocolate syrup. The original flavor has 12gms of added sugar (only?). They don’t even list it as an ingredient, which I’d assume is a scientific impossibility, given it’s ADDED sugar.
Back to the 2 1/2lb cans of Original. Not great, but better than this stuff.
I remember being taken to the local Dairy Queen when I was a kid, and my Dad always ordered a large strawberry malt. I remember the first time I ever tasted one, and it was like nothing else I'd ever had!
The local Kroger used to carry this, but like so many other products, they discontinued it suddenly, and won't even order it for me if I offer to buy the entire case! Likewise with Walmart.
Adding this powdered malt to even a glass of milk turns it into a taste treat you won't soon forget. And you can't make a milkshake without this stuff. It always bring me back to all those years ago as a kid. And after suffering a debilitating health problem, I dropped 40 pounds in three weeks. My doctor tells me this stuff is medicine for me, because I can use every last calorie I can get. It may not be the thing for anyone watching their weight, but "all things in moderation," adding this product to milk or ice cream is like a little bit of heaven.
I'm ordering more as soon as I finish this review!
