3.0 out of 5 stars Fair. Some adjustments are still needed, sound quality is really bad.
By Aimnkill on October 31, 2020
Pros: I used to have Nest cameras but it requires power which makes it difficult to scale. POE makes things perfect as it brings power and network to the cameras with one thing cable that can be hidden around and behind the siding (cat5, cat6, or in my case cat7). On top of that if you're living in an area with tight building regulations/code, adding power can be a pain pain, network cables aren't regulated. The second good point is the fastest connection and it reduce the number of Wifi devices, limiting interferences. I'm using a Netgear unmanaged 8-ports POE switch plugged in a small UPS that also power the modem and a wifi router which gives me 1hour power backup on the whole setup. Really happy with the result. Motion detection can be well adjusted which makes it less annoying than nest. It is also better than Nest to figure out what is human and what is not.

Cons:
To compare with Nest, ring image quality is WAY below the Nest cams, but I guess good enough for security. I wish Ring had a option to norrow the view angle which is insanely wide (some sort of flaps, shutters or iris would do the trick here). Night vision is ok except on the cameras that have an angle too close from the siding (white/gray siding), at night the IR light is reflected by the siding and blinds the camera to the point where I can't see anything else than the house siding itself. Nest Cams managed to adapt to that with some sort of HDR I guess, Ring do not so I had to put some electrical tape on the side to hide the house (see picture).
Also the sound is really really bad (again compared to Nest). I read some article from Ring support where they say it could be network related but it is not. I'm an IT specialist of network security so yeah, I have the skills and the equipment to test the network, its performances are stellar, if this is supposed to work on WiFi, cabled should be Zero problem.

Sum Up: good stuff. A little more effort on the privacy issues and that horrible sound quality and it will be perfect.
