Completely Addicting. One of the best cops shows ever.

Whoa. This show is the s***. There are plenty of cop shows to like. But this one shines above most.
Jason beghe is awesome. There can't possibly be anyone more perfect for his role.. Every character was chosen well. The acting is superb and very realistic. The dialogue and everything is very real as well.
There's comedy, love, hate, violence, gunfights, injuries, and everything in between.

I also like that every episode can still be understood, regardless if you've seen all the rest. There are many different situations that arise, and although there are certain themes that carry throughout, most situations are fairly easy to understand. There is complexity that arises from seemingly simple issues. The characters really get into it. Each one stays true to his personality.

They trained with real SWAT personnel and cops to get their actions just right. It's pretty convincing. I also like that there are personal issues going on, but it never becomes a soap opera. The focus is mostly on the missions, amd how the characters interact with each other.
There are a lot of emotions, explosions, and a rawness that I enjoy.
You won't be disappointed.
They will do anything to seek out justice- even if it's their own brand of justice.
Badass.

OH MY GOD!!!! Okay, we don't watch much tv, but the shows we do like we're very loyal.. it's hard for us to find new shows to get in to.. While watching Law & Order: SVU, we saw Hank Voight and his band of bad@ss cops assist Liv and her SVU crew track down a serial killer.. I liked his bad cop attitude and his gravely voice and decided to take a peak..
Heading over to Hulu, I was skeptical.. they just had the current season and I figured I'd watch one episode and be like "nah, not for us...."
My husband walks in and starts watching with me.. my son trickled in a bit later. We devoured all the episodes Hulu had to offer and headed to Amazon to start from the beginning... Needless to say, it was an epic binge (thank God it was Spring Break week!)
As the sun began to rise, we decided to grab some breakfast to go from our local diner and settle in for Season 2...
If you haven't tried Chicago PD yet, boy do you have some good times in store for you!
Best part is that when you've consumed all the episodes and you're tweaking for your next fix, the mastermind that is Dick Wolf created an intricate web of shows that intertwine; so you can feed on Chicago Med and Chicago Fire while you wait for Wednesday! :D

What FX's The Shied should have been

Chicago P.D. is one of the best cops shows in the last 15 years
It has elements from Homicide: Life on the Streets and The Closer/Major Crimes
with the look and feel of The Law and Order
It's very dark and realistic but, it never once goes over the top to the point of no return
It's paints the proper picture of cops in a major city trying to protect the people of there city!

Cast is strong (one of the best cast in terms of any police drama)
Jason Beghe as Hank Voight is what Vic Mackey from the Shield should have been
Hank isn't clean by any means but, he does have a deep moral ground he's human not a stereotypical crooked cop!
Jon Seda as Detective Antonio Dawson (It's good to see Jon playing a layered character he was good in Homicide: Life on the Streets but, he's grown and is a solid rock star on Chicago P.D.)
Elias Koteas as Detective Alvin Olinsky (Elias is freaking awesome in whatever he does he was Casey Jones in the original TMNT film it's cool to see him as this detective that's been through the mill and still tries to be his best!
Sophia Bush as Erin Lindsay (A once bad girl that Hank took in and raised as his own daughter Erin is very much Hank's daughter she has his drive and passion to be a good cop

Jesse Lee Soffer as Jay Halstead (I mostly know his previous work in Mob Doctor and Lifetime's Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret tv movie he can act it's good to see him get a big break like this!

Patrick John Flueger as Adam Ruzek (most people who were fan's of USA's 4400 will know him)
Marina Squerciati as beat-cop Kim Burgess (I can see why she was cast she has those big Bambi eyes you are walking into this series with Kim being your point of view it helps she is a solid actress all around!
Laroyce Hawkins as beat-cop Kevin Atwater (Kim's partner)
Amy Morton as desk sergeant Trudy Platt (Amy is really a amazing talent she's a hometown Chicago actress that should've broke out more and been more of a house hold name imo) she gets better with every episode
Stella Maeve as Nadia Decotis (Erin's drug addict friend who wants to change and be better and she does anyone who watches C.P.D. loves Nadia for all the right reasons

If you love series like Law and Order, L&O: C.I. , Homicide: Life on the Streets, Major Crimes it's on the same amazing level
Dick Wolf has the golden touch and knows how to write series about a profession that really gets no respect mostly due to News outlets
Great Series all around 5 Star Cast, super HQ action scenes, perfect writing there's a reason Chicago P.D. has already been renewed for a fourth season! One of the Best NBC's exclusives 10/10

Best police drama on television!

Great show with a great cast! I stumbled on to Chicago PD/Fire... The action was was initially caught my eye, but the characters and story lines kept me coming back... I have watched quite a few police dramas but there is just something about Chicago PD... It has the total package, great writing, great acting and an amazing cast with the best chemistry I have ever seen on a TV series... The stories seem like they could come from real life, like the writers really do their homework and work to keep things as close to the real thing as possible... The characters are so well developed... Very multi-dimensional and well rounded characters that are very easy to relate to... Dick Wolf and his crew are very special people with a great talent for great television!

Glorified police brutality
Verified purchase
This show glorifies police brutality. It lives in the fantasy world that police are good guys who are justified in the use of torture and abuse to save the day. It objectifies suspects as guilty with out due process and without proof of guilt in a courtroom. It skims over and gives the tinest lip service to the deeper social and systemic issues that leads to these crimes and the rise of these criminals. It doesn't talk nearly enough about police being put into situations where they are not suited to or how to handle any situation in a way that protects peoples' humanity. This show is just another in a long line of short answers to long questions - beat up the bad guy and then you can lock them up - with as much gratutious, sensantional violence and sex to distract from any real attempt to delve into real issues.

A good spin off series
Verified purchase
Chicago PD is the first of a few different shows spun off from Chicago Fire, setting up a Chicago-based series of shows from the massive production factory of Dick Wolf (who also produces the many shows of the Law and Order franchise and the newer FBI franchise of shows). As fans of Chicago Fire will know, many of the characters, including the series lead Hank Voight, played by Jason Beghe, Jay Halstead, played by Jesse Lee Soffer, and Antonio Dawson, played by Jon Seda, were introduced in season one of Chicago Fire. There, Voight was an antagonist for the crew of Station 51, so there is definitely some rehabilitating of his character, while still keeping him rough around the edges, being done. Mostly through a story arc that involves Voight helping a teenaged gang member get out and free of the gang. Voight is now leading the intelligence unit at Chicago PD which is kind of a rag-tag group that takes on all kinds of cases. Rounding out the intelligence unit is Erin Lindsay, played by Sophia Bush, Olinski, played by Elias Koteas, and Ruzek, played by Patrick Flueger. The main cast also includes Amy Morton as the gruff desk Seargent Trudy Platt, and beat cops Atwater (played by Laroyce Hawkins) and Burgess (played by Marina Sqerciati).

The show pretty much follows the case-of-the-week procedural format that shows like Hawaii Five-0, Castle, and the like have followed. Because it premiered at midseason and had a shortened run, there are not a ton of story arcs beyond Voight being pressured to work with Internal Affairs or risk going back to prison. The rest of the season is really spent on very slow character development. It is more character introduction with some hints as to their backstories, but not giving away too much too soon. The show had an official crossover episode with Chicago Fire, that involved a story that was kind of a cross between the Boston Marathon bombing and the Oklahoma City bombing events. It also continued a storyline from Law and Order SVU with some characters from that show appearing on an episode of PD. It was a good use of established shows to help out PD, yet the show was still able to stand on its own with its own characters.

Unlike the Chicago Fire DVD sets, this one does not have any behind-the-scenes material. The crossover episode with Chicago Fire and the Chicago Fire season one episode that introduced the character of Hank Voight are the only extras included.

Overall, the series is well-written and acted. It is definitely a gritty police drama and is not something that is extremely family-friendly. It has about as much violence as you would expect for this kind of show, and some sexual content, although very toned-down for network television. And they really don't push the bounds of what they could get away with on network TV with the sex. I would say they do push the bounds of network tv censors with the violence though. If you are a fan of Chicago Fire, and I would say even a fan of the Law and Order franchise, I think this is definitely worth checking out.
