The advertising picture shows a pretty youngish woman supporting a teen aged girl on one side and a hand-some youngish man supporting the girl on her other side. The teenager looks happy; she appears dressed up. This gave me a good feeling - that of adults helping and mentoring people growing up- which tilted my
feelings toward buying the movie. It was rather different. The basic story is this: the teenager's long time bbf is looking for a date for the Prom, influenced in this because his bgf (above) finds Proms shallow, et cetera, and she SAYS she won't go. Bbf asks Literature prof for help, who gives boy a published work that includes rather nice poetry, which really encourages boy to ask for what he really wants; therefore he proceeds by asking a famous actress to the Prom with flowers, a very cute video, and a spiffy tie and suit.
It works. Famous actress comes to town (not her town - their town) meets teacher, gets to know him, and we get a LOT of info about her early life, et cetera et cetera. This whole middle is really about her, and once there, she starts taking over and making/ decorating the Prom in HER taste, not what the Student
Commitee wants. Unfortunately she is now just taking over, and not being the "community builder" who
wants to treat everyone with good listening skills and empathy toward all. She's become a smiling despot.
Fast forward to finale: teacher and actress are quite attracted mutually, work out how to be chaperones t the Prom, and bbf and bgf resolve a few misunderstandings, realize how much they like one another, and with a little makeup tips and the right dress, end up sharing a really important time together!
