Something that I have learned while briefly working in telecommunications sales is that companies don't tell you that their modem/wifi router base stations suck. They are the cheapest things they can get away with. They also don't tell you that their boasted speeds, i.e. 200 mbps, 400 mbps, or even 1 gbps, are only if the computer is plugged in. Wireless, especially when coming through what I have already said was the cheapest thing available is going to be much slower. A mesh, such as eero, solves that by plugging in where the computer would plug in. This way, the speed is more true to what the advertised telecommunications company's plan speed is, distributing that speed of connectivity throughout your home in a way that just isn't possible with a router/modem alone.

No dead spots

I have five beacons in my 6600 square foot, three level brick home and I have no dead spots. I also have wi-fi outside about 20 feet from the house. (I haven't tried farther than that.) I replaced my old system of a router and two extenders. With those, there was slow internet on the third level farthest away from the router, even with the extender. With the beacons, I no longer have a problem. It was a little pricey to outfit the whole system, but worth every penny. We were paying for fiber optic cable but not getting the benefit until I bought the Eero system. I love it. We have about 12 gadgets (cell phones, iPads, laptops, kindles) and Smart TV's (3) and everything works all at the same time. Great investment.

Below is my review of the Eero but it incorporates everything you need to know about the Beacon:

So I bought this to upgrade from my old Apple Airport Express. My modem supplied by Spectrum only has one ethernet connection as did the Airport Express. Due to COVID-19, I’ll be working out of my house and needed more Ethernet ports and increased bandwidth. Called Spectrum, upgraded my speed and bought the Eero router and one Beacon. I also bought an Ethernet switch to plug into the Eero - just Incase I need more ports.

The installation of this was easy but definitely took me longer than 30 minutes. I literally had to re-pair all of my devices manually (MacBook Pro, iPhone, 3 echo dots, one echo & firestick) to this router which was time consuming. It did not recognize everything as some reviews.

To get a clear picture of my setup: The modem is in my office which is in the front of my 1000 square foot condo built in 1982. I’ve always had horrible WIFI connectivity in the back half of my place.

When I bought this router, I decided to also buy the Beacon because even with an extender with my old set up, my WIFI connection in the back half of my condo either drops or is very weak. That’s where I have my firestick, one echo dot & the echo is in the middle of my condo.

I got the Eero first and once set up - experienced the same connectivity issues in the back of my condo. The firestick was constantly dropping or giving me a fair or marginal connection. Same with the echo dot in my master bedroom (which is in the back half of my condo near the firestick).

The Beacon came today and the setup was so ridiculously easy - I was full blown excited. However, although it paired seamlessly to the Eero, it didn’t automatically signal everything in the back half of my condo. The solution? I re-paired the firestick, echo and echo dot in the back half of my condo and now it shows on the app the Eero is signaling the front half of my condo and the Beacon is signaling the back half. For the first time ever - I have 5 bars everywhere.

I gave this an overall 5 star because the Eero WITH the Beacon is a beautiful combination. I gave the WIFI rating a 3 because the Eero is supposed to cover 1500 square feet and that was far from accurate in my 1000 square foot place.

I suggest whoever buys the Eero to spend the extra money and buy the Beacon. The Beacon was the game changer. Little overpriced but worth the 5 bars. Say goodbye to dead zones with the Beacon.

This system is junk ... it is faster WiFi for sure but it requires a constant reboot of the system. I had it four days now and had to reboot twice. My slow internet never once failed or needed a reboot. Definitely faster but doesn’t matter if the whole system requires constant reboots. Also on air commercial on Sirius says 60 days to return if you are not happy. Eero web said 30 days minus shipping ... so that is two strikes against them now

I talked about this unit in my "Pro" (3-Eero) review. It is just what I needed to replace a Netgear WiFi Extender that was plugged into the ceiling outlet for my opener in the high bay shop. When I was running the Extender, the App said 81% signal strength. When I replaced it with the Beacon, the App said "Good" but when the aluminum ladder was removed, the App shows it at full strength. The gripe about Beacons is they don't have an ethernet port. That's a valid ding for many, but that feature isn't viable for the ceiling. Total distance from an Eero to the Beacon is 100 feet with the units having a direct sight to each other through two windows. I'd presume I'm at the edge of "solid". I'm glad everything worked out well as it's a pricey thing going with a 3-Unit Pro and then a Beacon. Nice to have something that manages itself. And where did the Netgear Extender go? Out in the Kohler whole house generator which is ethernet only. Eero has no problem with it.
