Very cool. My dog is a rescue and I was told he was a border collie mix. His personality lead me to do a test because he just didn’t have the personality a border collie. Come to find out he’s a Shih Tzu pitbull mix which makes way more sense. I included picture because everyone has a hard time picturing a Shih Tzu pit mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please stop questioning and just buy this
By skippy nikki on April 6, 2017
We rescued a puppy in December who was described as a pug mix. (as you can see in the photos everyone but me doubted this was correct) so we decided to DNA test her. I was looking at several tests (both more and less expensive than this one) and decided on Embark because of the genetic disorder portion of the text. My parents lost a dog, that could have been saved had they known about his genetic condition. They kept me updated regularly as to where they were in the process, and though it feels like it took forever, I never wondered if my girl's DNA was shelved somewhere being ignored, because I knew just what step it was going through.

When the genetic portion came back with her testing positive for a scary sounding condition, the Embark geneticists sent a personalized email before releasing the results, letting me know things weren't as bad as it sounded, and explaining further about the condition (including the breed of dog that it typically cause the most issues with) Had I just opened my results and seen this condition I would have PANICKED!! However knowing more about it allowed me to not panic, and just let me Vet know so we could keep an eye on her as she gets older.

I was very impressed when the breed tests came back!! They were very complete and detailed. My husband could not believe we got that much information for our money. (one test we had looked at was a $200 blood test that would only give us her breed) Not only did we have the breakdown of her breed, we also got a family tree, as well as the level of inbreeding on her genes.
I have seen some reviews on here complaining about the Supermut results, however when you get the supermut results they also provide information about what trace breeds go into the supermut.

Another amazing thing is that if new genetic disorders are discovered, they run these through the existing DNA profiles, and if your dog tests positive they will update your results and let you know.
The only con I have about this test is how long it takes to get the results, but given everything they check, this is completely understandable!!
If you are on the fence about what doggy DNA test to get, please do yourself a favor and pick this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Far from accurate
By Kelly L on December 17, 2018
I think Embark may have accidentally switched DNA samples because there is no this is accurate. My 6-month pup has a nonshedding long coat and is 15 pounds. People will think I am crazy if I tell them she is a Pitbull, Chihuahua, Rottweiler mix LOL

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
By melissa hopkins on November 27, 2018
What a scam! I have a Bearded Collie/Old English Sheepdog mix. I was so excited to find out what she was mixed with. After all of the anticipation Embark came back with the results of what was obviously another dog's sample. I have a long-haired, non-shedding dog and every breed in their results are shedding dogs that are mostly short-haired other than Chow and German Shepherd. No Bearded Collie or Old English Sheepdog in the results. Her results:
11.0% Boxer
11.0% Australian Cattle Dog
10.3% Bulldog
10.2% Rottweiler
10.2% German Shepherd Dog
9.8% Chow Chow
6.9% American Staffordshire Terrier
30.6% Supermutt
I guess Supermutt is her dominant breed because she doesn't resemble any of the breeds they came back with. Waste of money! I emailed them to say that I thought they sent the incorrect results and they just came back with a BS response. Save your money and spend it on something fun for your fur baby. We know that her father was Bearded Collie. Sorry my pic is sideways but she is none of the result breeds.
First picture is the dog that was tested, 2 through 5 are litter mates and the last picture is dad. We saw a picture of the mother and it was behind a gate. She looked smaller and resembled maybe a Portuguese water dog but we are not sure which is why we purchased this product.

Wisdom Panel is inaccurate, highly questionable and doesn't give half the features that Embark does, and DNAmydog is so poor quality its actually disgusting they're still sold.

I found my girl at 5 weeks old on the side of a highway in the freezing winter. She was a wonderful addition, very loving, protective and loyal. Slept in the bed with me every night, helped me with my traumas and saved my life more than once. She was the most loyal friend you could have asked for. Walked and hiked with me at my side and never once strayed. She was there for me every step of the way. A rough guess we thought she was maybe Lab Mastiff, but her results showed true to her reserve dog blood. As time went on, I learned so much about dog biology, and how to train/care for her breed requirements properly now that we knew. I completed my certification for Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog training, all thanks to my girl giving me the motivation do better for dogs everywhere.

She started developing a ton of health issues. She was back and forth to the vet, different diagnoses every time, never giving me answers. I knew there was something more, and vets wanted thousands to determine what it was. She started dragging her hind legs, and could barely walk. She fought through it, always crying as she pulled herself up the stairs to lay with me, even though she had a cozy bed downstairs. I eventually came across Embark on youtube, and bought a DNA + Health Report. It finally told me what she was suffering with. It detected she not only had hypothyroidism, but extensive liver damage (Low ALT levels) and had inherited 2 variants for Degenerative Melopathy. A disease of the nervous system that starts in the low spine, and slowly paralyzes the limbs. Everything made sense. I knew then, it was time to let her go. She passed peacefully in the vets office, resting on my lap. She was a good girl, my best friend before anyone else, and will not be forgotten. Many thanks to Embark for the wonderful service they offer. Please don't settle for another kit because its cheaper, embark is the only one I trust for their accuracy and extensive database of breeds and lines.

We live in London and got this to test our dog. It's super easy to swab your dog (just a little earbud swab that goes under their mouth flaps to get saliva). Because Embark is based in America you can't use their pre-paid bag to ship the sample back to their lab, but you can use the bag as a bag for shipping. We just went into the Royal Mail post office and paid for it to be shipped over so they slapped a label on the bag for us. I think it was like £10? On the shipping label we just wrote "dog DNA sample". It took a while to get there (maybe 2 weeks?) but eventually we got an email saying they had received it and were shipping it to their processing lab. Then we waited just under a week and got an email saying it was processing. And then around the 4 week mark we got the results. Really pleased with the communication from Embark! We wish the results were a bit more exciting but it was a fun experience!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and accurate.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 18, 2021
Our gorgeous rescue dog was found on the streets in Bulgaria, adopted by a UK family but shortly given up by them as well. The British rescue that took her in told us they thought she was a "staffie cross" - utterly adorable, very gentle and loving with people but a bit anxious. Over time, we realised that she was also not comfortable around other dogs. All totally manageable and she's come on a long way but we wanted to know how much of her behaviour was nature vs nurture. And we could see that she didn't have the big staffie head - but more of a German Shepherd shape - so we were very curious. That said, on reading the reviews about the US focus and mainstream breeds, we were fully prepared to just get a DNA report that said "European Village Dog" or "100% supermutt".

As it happens, the report came back saying that she was in fact a majority mix of GSD, but with some Rottweiler, American Pit Bull and American Staffie too. We imagine she was bred to be a fighting dog or a breed bitch for the same but her timid nature and anxiety issues meant she wasn't cut out for the task! Hence being thrown out onto the streets. The genetics explain why she's not 100% happy around other dogs so we can manage our expectations of her accordingly.

The health report flagged a genetic predisposition that we'll flag to our vet too - and would only have been diagnosed through expensive blood tests here.

Literally, the only thing that wasn't spot on was that she was "likely to have blue eyes" - here's are orange. Otherwise, the age, weight, coat colour etc. was all totally spot on - and we didn't supply ANY information about her before the results came in.

So, all in all, it's worked out great for us and I'd highly recommend it.
