How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsBuy this for your kid instead of the iPad, seriously
Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2021
This is everything I’ve wanted in a tablet for my child. He has an iPad, but has literally not used it since he got the fire. It’s perfect, here’s why.
- The battery life is great.
- The fact that it only displays downloads when we are somewhere with no wifi, saves me one million questions. (Amazon should honestly market that in the blurb.)
- The parental controls are easy and I can pick and choose which ones he can use.
- The expandable storage is so easy. He can take all the photos and videos that he wants and I won’t have to clear them out every couple of weeks to make more room.
- We did not download the YouTube Kids app and it’s life changing. No more bizarrely sexist videos of grown woman playing with dolls. However, we still have Blippi.
- Love having access to Kids+
- Love all of the traditional Kindle/Prime features (books, music, educational games, non-educational games)
- The kickstand is amazing and does not fall over of my child breathes on it. It’s also a great handle.

Things to note
- My child is 4 1/2
- He’s had an iPad for an embarrassing long time, so he is super comfortable using a tablet.
- We had gotten him a kindle fire 7 and just put a kids profile on it a couple years ago and this upgrade makes all the difference in the world.
- We are a kindle family, so the interface is not new or foreign to us.

Honestly, I love this over the iPad for my kid, because the iPad is not made for children. It is durable, absolutely. However, the fire is made for him and it’s laid out in a way that I know what he is watching and when he goes to download games and videos, they are appropriate.

2.0 out of 5 starsInterface is so bad
Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2021
We periodically get kindle fires, mostly for having a cheap tablet to download and watch movies while traveling. This is the first time we’ve gotten the kid version and the interface is just so, so, so bad.

It’s cluttered. I can’t find anything. I’m looking for tv shoes to download and the search pulls up 13 million unrelated apps, books, web videos and other junk I don’t want but I can’t find the basic show I do want.

I know it’s a cheap tablet but I’m ready to throw it out the window and pay for another iPad.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible parental control settings

Unintuitive piece of crap. There, I said it. Spent 20 mins trying to set up contact so kiddo can call me when needed - still not able to figure it out. And it’s literally the first thing I’m trying to do. Set it up in Alexa App, Alexa app is useless. Easier to set up a smart plug then add a phone number 🙄
Regret buying from the start!

2.0 out of 5 stars The Warranty is a big lie it is NOT worry free.

I bought this kindle and had it for 49days. It started over heating and shutting off. I had bought this kindle as a 2 year worry free replacement. That was a lie, I was only given 2 options 1- send the kindle back and they would try to fix it if they couldn't they would then send me another and wait 2 weeks or pay $16 upgrade fee and they would send me a refurbished kindle, not a new one. When talking to support I was hung up on and not called back, the representatives will not let you talk supervisor they will not let you talk to someone higher up. I have never been treated this way ever from amazon I am very disappointed in there warranty service that you are pay to get. I have bought many kindles I am currently on number 17 and due to charging ports stop working or they are obsolete. I have always had awesome customer service till now. So be aware the warranty service is not what you think you are getting when buying.

1.0 out of 5 stars Still impossible to manage child's content
Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2021
Color: Sky BlueStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
I only buy these on prime day because they are poor value at full price and it takes a year to forget how frustrating they are to manage your child's content. This year I got the "pro" thinking it might be better. It is better, but kind of like getting hit by a car is better than getting hit by a bus.

The mechanisms to manage child's content is still awful. I'll try to be constructive here in the hopes that it may, one day, result in a better product.

First of all the home screen is inundated with suggested content. So much so that finding what is actually installed is very difficult. And of course all the suggested content appears to already be installed, so my kids start tapping on any fun-looking app graphic and they are either frustrated the didn't start right away (because its downloading/installing) or they fill the tablet up with junk games.

When you go to manage individual apps, there appears to be no way to actually remove an app. Any app my child has ever downloaded appears in the list. If I remove it from my profile it still appears for them. Further, you have to uninstall the app and then go and uncheck it, so it required two actions to "hide" it (because its never actually removed). There is no "remove all" or "uncheck all" so it becomes a tedious exercise to scroll through an ever-expanding list and uncheck. The app management tool in your profile comingles all devices and profiles making it impossible to know which device/profile has what installed. And there isn't a way to check all items, so again, its individually removing every garbage app my child has clicked on.

Lastly, there is no way to test your settings so you can be sure you've properly enabled what you want your child to have access to, so I'm constantly having to switch between profiles on the tablet, which every year, is frustratingly slow - even for new purchases.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't add Prime content to Child's profile -- what's the point?
Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2021
Color: Sky BlueStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
I chose this tablet because of the parental controls. But you can't add content from Prime Music or Videos to your child's profile -- only content that you've purchased. So if you want your kid to watch an episode of a TV show through Prime Video, you have to let them watch it on the adult profile. Which seems to COMPLETELY MISS THE POINT. So if you're buying this because you just happen to like the Kindle Fire, great. If you're buying this so your kid can watch Paw Patrol, know that you'll have to BUY Paw Patrol, or else let your kid access the adult profile. I have to figure out how to disable the child profile now, and then how to implement parental controls on the adult profile, because half the point of buying this was to have my kid be able to watch cartoons and listen to her music.

2.0 out of 5 stars Warranty is not Worry free
Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2021

We upgraded my son’s tablet from a Fire 8 to a Fire 10. The Fire 10 has a better battery life and picture quality, but the warranty is not as good as what we had previously with the Fire 8.

The screen isn’t as resilient as stated, even with a screen protector. Purchased the Fire 10 and screen protector in July of 2021 and the screen cracked in November of 2021. Upon calling Amazon support they do what’s called an in-service warranty, where you have to send the product back in and then they will repair it or send you a new one. That process takes about 2 weeks. The other process is to pay $15 for a new product. Of course, I opted for the $15 replacement but please be aware that this service is a lot different from before. The warranty with the Fire 8 was worry free as stated. The warranty for the Fire 10 is only worry free with an additional $15 each time you use the warranty, or go without the product for 2 weeks. Please correct that in your description so customers can know what they are purchasing. Thank you.

1.0 out of 5 stars You can only expand the storage on this tablet 32gb

You can only expand the tablet another 32Gig using an HC-I micro SD card. Non of the XC-I card will work. You can not expand this tablet to 1 TB. I spent many hours on line with Amazon support to no avail. All they could do was apologize. I purchased 2 of these tablet and both of them will not recognize a micro SD card with XC-I spec. You can only get 32 gb HC-I cards , they don't get any larger. Even the Sandisk cards recommended by support would not work. I went through 3 types of cards to no avail had to send them back.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Kids+ subscription does not add up when you buy multiple devices
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2021
Color: IntergalacticStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
I rarely write reviews because the sellers usually try to fix things, but Amazon is giant and doesn't care.

I am a big fan of the kids fire tablets. My two kids love them, and I have been a customer since the first version.

I bought two Fire HD 10 Kids Pro tablets to replace the previous version because the free year of Amazon Kids+ helps with the cost of the device, but I only got one year of Amazon Kids+ instead of two.

I contacted customer support and thought that Amazon would add the extra year, and problem solved. To my surprise, Amazon just told me that the subscription does not add up. I loved the new device, it's a big improvement in software and hardware, and I will keep one. Now I have the problem of explaining to one of my kids that he will need to use the old one. Hopefully, my older kid will understand.

Amazon, if you are reading, please add a note on your website saying that the Amazon Kids+ subscription does not add up if you buy multiple devices. You are losing customers, or people assume they are getting multiple years when buying multiple devices and will be surprised in a year.

1.0 out of 5 stars No alexa on an amazon device-can't use sidekick
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2021
Color: Sky BlueStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
After being on the phone for over an hour and talking to (currently 5 people.....and counting) it seems as if the kids profile doesn't allow you to have Alexa enabled (despite being able to have kid settings for echo devices in the house). This means you can't use the sidekick feature (read with Alexa where Alexa will help kid pronounce words, encourage them, etc.) or ask Alexa to call someone, drop in, etc. which means for a kid who is learning to read or write, they will not be able to fully navigate the feature.

Considering sidekick is something that appears in the parent dashboard, I am very confused as to the purpose of this feature if it is not accessible on an Amazon kids tablet.

2.0 out of 5 stars High hopes destroyed :-(
Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2021
Color: BlackStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
I had such high hopes for these tablets (purchased two), but they turned out to be extremely disappointed. My boys have been using Samsung Galaxy tablets for the past few years (inherited my old ones), and one died when we were out of town. Since they’re only 5, I wanted something more kid focused with good parental controls. Enter the Kindle Fire 10.0 Kids Pro. Unfortunately, this tablet didn’t even come close to meeting my expectations. For some reason, the apps I download on the parent side can not be seen on the kids side. In fact, they’re not even an option when I access the parent portal. I spent two hours on the phone with Amazon customer service and an additional hour via online chat with no answers. No one can tell me what the issue is. The only reason I didn’t return the tablets is because of the 2-year warranty. Thankfully my kids know how to use a “regular” tablet, so I don’t even bother with the kids side of it. They just use the parent side and have access to the apps I want them to. The other ones are hidden. I would not recommend this tablet to anyone. It’s not worth the frustration in my opinion.
