How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsBuy this for your kid instead of the iPad, seriously
Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2021
This is everything I’ve wanted in a tablet for my child. He has an iPad, but has literally not used it since he got the fire. It’s perfect, here’s why.
- The battery life is great.
- The fact that it only displays downloads when we are somewhere with no wifi, saves me one million questions. (Amazon should honestly market that in the blurb.)
- The parental controls are easy and I can pick and choose which ones he can use.
- The expandable storage is so easy. He can take all the photos and videos that he wants and I won’t have to clear them out every couple of weeks to make more room.
- We did not download the YouTube Kids app and it’s life changing. No more bizarrely sexist videos of grown woman playing with dolls. However, we still have Blippi.
- Love having access to Kids+
- Love all of the traditional Kindle/Prime features (books, music, educational games, non-educational games)
- The kickstand is amazing and does not fall over of my child breathes on it. It’s also a great handle.

Things to note
- My child is 4 1/2
- He’s had an iPad for an embarrassing long time, so he is super comfortable using a tablet.
- We had gotten him a kindle fire 7 and just put a kids profile on it a couple years ago and this upgrade makes all the difference in the world.
- We are a kindle family, so the interface is not new or foreign to us.

Honestly, I love this over the iPad for my kid, because the iPad is not made for children. It is durable, absolutely. However, the fire is made for him and it’s laid out in a way that I know what he is watching and when he goes to download games and videos, they are appropriate.

2.0 out of 5 starsInterface is so bad

We periodically get kindle fires, mostly for having a cheap tablet to download and watch movies while traveling. This is the first time we’ve gotten the kid version and the interface is just so, so, so bad.

It’s cluttered. I can’t find anything. I’m looking for tv shoes to download and the search pulls up 13 million unrelated apps, books, web videos and other junk I don’t want but I can’t find the basic show I do want.

I know it’s a cheap tablet but I’m ready to throw it out the window and pay for another iPad.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fire HD 10 (2021) with kid-proof case, 2 year warranty, and 1 year of Kids+
Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021
Color: BlackStyle: Standalone Fire Kids Pro
The new Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids and Kids Pro tablets have the same hardware as the new Fire HD 10 (2021) tablets, but include a “kid-proof” case, a 2 year worry-free warranty, and 1 year of the Amazon Kids+ subscription service.

The regular Fire HD 10 (2021) costs $150, so you are paying an extra $50 for the case, warranty and year of Kids+. Is this worth it? To help you decide, here are the current costs of the Kids+ service:

Single child (1 Kids+ account):
Prime members – $2.99/month , Non Prime members – $4.99/month
* (Note, no yearly payment option) *

Family (up to 4 Kids+ accounts):
Prime members - $6.99/month, Non Prime members - $9.99/month
or 1 year prepaid annually – Prime members - $69, Non Prime members - $99

So, how valuable this free included year of Kids+ is to you, depends on if you are an Amazon Prime member or not, and how many children you have that will be using the Kids+ service. Note that you will be billed at the month rate once your subscription expires in a year.

Our family somewhat enjoyed the Kids+ service when it used to be called FreeTime Unlimited, but it really didn't seem to be worth the cost to us overall. With multiple children, it starts to get pretty expensive to have this extra content. If you have one very young child under 6, it might be more worthwhile because they can be entertained by just watching some of the videos, but once our children were older than that they found the content to be boring and just wanted a regular tablet.

The main difference between the Fire HD 10 Kids and Kids Pro versions, is that the Kids Pro has a slimmer case, different color options, and a customizable home screen that more resembles a regular Fire HD 10. You also have the ability to create a list of acceptable website to visit on the Pro version.

Overall, these are solid tablets, but over the years we have found that getting the smaller, less expensive models for our youngest children was a better value, and Kids+ stopped being entertaining around elementary school age.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great kindle with 1 problem
Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2021
Color: BlackStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
We have had the regular kindle for our kids for years because the kids kindle were awful.
Thus sounded better so we gave it a try. So far it's a hit! My 11 year old loves it and says it's the best kindle ever. The parental controls are very easy. I love that if it isn't included in the kids stuff it sends me a text that she is asking permission to get an app. And also does the same for in-app purchases. So easy and a great feature! I love that she can browse the internet for school related things with a filter so it's safer. Obviously we will still be careful of the apps and web searches as I'm sure stuff can leak through.

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because of it only being 32gb. And only 25.? Usable storage. We are used to 64gb storage. But that wasn't an option. And adding a memory card doesn't work well due to most apps won't go on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I found it fairly simple to set up
Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2021
Color: IntergalacticStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
I’m not a tech savvy person by any means, but I found this easy to function and exactly what we were looking for. We have always used the other Amazon fire tablets so we’re pretty used to the set up. I have a 6 (almost 7) year old son and there is plenty of content with apps and games that he loves. I like the idea of being able to get an email to approve anything before he gets it from the app/game store. I also like being able to slowly introducing him to the Internet beyond youtube.

The Alexa call app felt very simple to me, within a few minutes I was able to get it set up and contacts added. He doesn’t have a phone but for when he is with the babysitter or elsewhere it’s nice that I can check in with him/vice versa, and he can now video call family. Only downside is he’s called me like 30 times in a row.

We mainly bought this to allow him to play his games with the safety features. Before he was using his younger amazon fire tablet in my profile to achieve the same thing so it didn’t offer the safety side of it. This also allows the calling/video chat of pre approved people which is a big bonus.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible parental control settings

Unintuitive piece of crap. There, I said it. Spent 20 mins trying to set up contact so kiddo can call me when needed - still not able to figure it out. And it’s literally the first thing I’m trying to do. Set it up in Alexa App, Alexa app is useless. Easier to set up a smart plug then add a phone number 🙄
Regret buying from the start!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value for the price

Easy to set up. Screen is bright and quality is excellent. Sound is loud and clear. The product is well built and a great value for the price paid.

The only thing I don’t understand is where are the Amazon ecosystem of apps like the photo app. My little one likes to look at pictures saved to the photo app. I Can’t find it and can’t seem to add it. I can add Netflix and Disney+, but I can’t add Amazon photo?

Also there is so much content all strewn all over the place. It is not intuitive and is poorly organized. It is a big mess of just stuff. I wish I could customize it a bit more to my liking and create a minimalistic environment.

But all in all, if your child just wants to watch videos and occasionally read books then this is perfect. Don’t expect an iPad or an android tablet you can make your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and tons of free stuff for kids to do!
Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2021

I have always loved Fire tablets. I have the Fire HD 10 for myself. My son loves the Kids Pro! He is 6 and I tell you what, free downloads for a year can't be beat because once it is downloaded it is yours to keep forever! I love the parent dashboard. It allows parents to either approve or not approve a download request. You can also, block certain websites and keep an eye on what your child is actually doing on the tablet. There are three different filters you can choose to determine as a parent what type of content is appropriate for your child. The only con is the case. It is not going to protect the tablet if dropped on a hard surface. I wish that Amazon included the bulkier more protective case that they have on previous kids tablets. But overall the pros outweigh the cons. Awesome tablet!

2.0 out of 5 stars The Warranty is a big lie it is NOT worry free.

I bought this kindle and had it for 49days. It started over heating and shutting off. I had bought this kindle as a 2 year worry free replacement. That was a lie, I was only given 2 options 1- send the kindle back and they would try to fix it if they couldn't they would then send me another and wait 2 weeks or pay $16 upgrade fee and they would send me a refurbished kindle, not a new one. When talking to support I was hung up on and not called back, the representatives will not let you talk supervisor they will not let you talk to someone higher up. I have never been treated this way ever from amazon I am very disappointed in there warranty service that you are pay to get. I have bought many kindles I am currently on number 17 and due to charging ports stop working or they are obsolete. I have always had awesome customer service till now. So be aware the warranty service is not what you think you are getting when buying.

1.0 out of 5 stars Still impossible to manage child's content
Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2021
Color: Sky BlueStyle: Standalone Fire Kids ProVerified Purchase
I only buy these on prime day because they are poor value at full price and it takes a year to forget how frustrating they are to manage your child's content. This year I got the "pro" thinking it might be better. It is better, but kind of like getting hit by a car is better than getting hit by a bus.

The mechanisms to manage child's content is still awful. I'll try to be constructive here in the hopes that it may, one day, result in a better product.

First of all the home screen is inundated with suggested content. So much so that finding what is actually installed is very difficult. And of course all the suggested content appears to already be installed, so my kids start tapping on any fun-looking app graphic and they are either frustrated the didn't start right away (because its downloading/installing) or they fill the tablet up with junk games.

When you go to manage individual apps, there appears to be no way to actually remove an app. Any app my child has ever downloaded appears in the list. If I remove it from my profile it still appears for them. Further, you have to uninstall the app and then go and uncheck it, so it required two actions to "hide" it (because its never actually removed). There is no "remove all" or "uncheck all" so it becomes a tedious exercise to scroll through an ever-expanding list and uncheck. The app management tool in your profile comingles all devices and profiles making it impossible to know which device/profile has what installed. And there isn't a way to check all items, so again, its individually removing every garbage app my child has clicked on.

Lastly, there is no way to test your settings so you can be sure you've properly enabled what you want your child to have access to, so I'm constantly having to switch between profiles on the tablet, which every year, is frustratingly slow - even for new purchases.
