How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

My wife and I were looking for a solution while in the car for extended periods of time over handing our phones to our son. Now...we were steering towards and iPad but after all of the accessories it would have been 3X the price of this tablet. IMHO this is worth every penny. Just activate the hotspot on your phone and connect it via WiFi to the tablet. Easy pZ

1.0 out of 5 starsNO PARENTAL CONTROL UNLESS YPU PAY UP 3$ A MONTH, CONSTANT ISSUES
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020
WHAT THEY DONT TELL YOU...is that you have no parental controls anymore UNLESS you pay up 3$ a month for kids+ that gives you the parental control that you expect from this out of the box. The hardware and software are in the Kindle already, but they put a pay wall between you and accessing it. This is so unethical I will be making amazon pay for this with many many returns and lots of b.s.
Also, You have no control over what amazon puts on your childs home screen. Why amazon feels it is acceptable to put Marxist anti american propoganda on your childs home screen is a point of concern. They say you have complete control but you have none.

DO NOT BUY THESE FOR YOUR CHILDREN unless you enjoy watching them cry in dissapointment when thr kindle dosent do what it is supposed to, everyday. The apps CONSTANTLY crash or just dont work to begin with.
And why is spanish content recommended to my child when we specifically select ENGLISH when you set it up? Again, you have no control over this either.

2.0 out of 5 stars Verify Content!! My A-Fire Came With A Political Agenda!!
Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2020
Color: PinkStyle: Kids Fire HD 8Verified Purchase
I bought this for my four year old. Mostly for educational fun. Overall the functions/operation are good. My biggest complaint is it comes with “free” pre-loaded political BS. Tons of Books & Apps pre loaded pushing politicians & political BS that is one sided. I don’t know who thought this was a good idea but I think it’s sickening. I don’t care what party you side with just stop trying to brainwash kids. If you purchase this please take the time to delete apps and books that come pre-loaded on the Fire. You may not approve of the political garbage that may be inappropriate for your child’s age. If I can’t make the apps and books go away I will be returning the item.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware - LIBERAL INDOCTRINATION of your toddlers
Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2020
Color: BlueStyle: Kids Fire HD 8Verified Purchase
My wife and I purchased two fire tablets - kids edition for my 2 year old and 5 year old. When you set up the tablet you select the content age range. I choose 2yrs - 8 years. Once set up is complete the Home Screen shows a suggestion of apps, books, videos etc.... There is a section called “Books that Inspire Change” and in this section are multiple books about Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, escaping from slavery...you get the point. Furthermore, in the History section you can not find a book about the founding of this country, almost every suggested book is about the slave trade as if that’s the only relevant history of this country. They sprinkled in a few books about dinosaurs, I assume to mask the indoctrination. I am soo disgusted!!! As a conservative I thought I had to worry only about liberal high school teachers and college professors poisoning my children with Marxist views, but No it is starting way earlier!!! BTW I did not find any suggested material about the birth of Christ (and it was Christmas) or any reference to God for that matter. Nothing about George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. This is really sad and says a lot about the direction of this country unless conservative parents start to stand up to protect our children from the constant attempt from the left to indoctrinate our children from an early age!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful except for set up.

The media could not be loaded.
We bought the kids fire tablets, not really knowing what we had done. When you first turn on the tablet it goes to the parent account, you have to have an amazon account, and log in.
Then you add a child’s name and make them a child’s profile.
We didn’t realize it came with a year subscription to amazon kids freetime.
I had no idea what it was, but when you set up the tablet, it automatically starts your one year subscription.
The subscription includes COUNTLESS books, videos, and apps.
I will say MANY of these books were not age appropriate for my young children. There is an “age filter” but it only kind of works.
I put the age limiter down to age 2-3 and there were still many books and videos about ghosts, zombies, wars, and just some really weird stuff. Thankfully, there is a “block content” section that you can look up certain words and block those kinds of things. And when the time comes, you can also unblock that content.
It took my about 3 hours (which is the only reason I gave it 4/5 stars) to set the tablets up and remove all of the unwanted content.
So each app needs to be downloaded on WiFi, but can be played off WiFi once downloaded. Same with books, and videos.
You can remove downloads easily, and add apps to your “favorites” for easy access.
You also can search at the top for the kinds of apps, books, and videos you want or prefer. Like I searched for “disney” and about a hundred books pop up, 20+ apps, and related content.
At the top there are many categories to help you find what you are looking for, like “movies” or “educational” etc.
You can also disable the camera so that you childs apps cannot take video of them.
All apps not on the kids freetime subscription must be downloaded through the parents account first. So apps like Hulu, and disney plus we’re kind of annoying to download, but easy enough (There are many YouTube videos that can show you how to download new apps)
Otherwise, the apps are great for learning alphabet, spelling, math, and reading.
The cases are very durable.
The stands on the cases work really well.
The touch screen is really responsive.
The side buttons work well.
They are fairly loud if you want them to be.
The settings and profiles are all locked by a four digit number while on child’s account.
Get the fire tablet with the most amount of storage. We did, and we still want more so bought extra storage (micro sd cards)

1.0 out of 5 stars On second thought.....still returning
Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2020

Extremely dissapointed. This thing is literally 2 days old and is by far the slowest device in our house and sometimes just never decides to open and we have to restart the devices. We have only downloaded a couple apps so far so this has nothing to do with over use or disk space. I could have sworn the description said this thing had a quad core processor yet doing even the most basic task is like pulling teeth. I would like to say this is just my impatient children complaining but I had to agree, it's simply terrible. All of our old crappy 6 year old phones and laptops operate better than this brand new tabket on the exact same network.

Update: someone from Amazon called me shortly after this review was written. Seems like they are trying to make it better. I followed their steps and ran the update and unfortunately it still is awful. We were able to download a few apps, still very slow and clunky to download an open but whatever it’s cheap. Today we were on a road trip and tried to open freetime for the kids and it says we need wifi to do this, funny considering you need to download whatever you want to play to your device rather than just playing online. Just requested our return label.

1.0 out of 5 stars NO ability to customize kid's home screen -"freetime" interface is TERRIBLE
Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2020
Color: BlueStyle: Kids Fire HD 8Verified Purchase
The "freetime" interface is TERRIBLE for young kids (toddlers). I spent hours today trying to configure it so my toddler only had a few options instead of the 10,000 available. Even their support chat techs didn't have an easy way to do it.... you literally have to block EVERYTHING separately - what!?!?!? The adult profiles are cleaner and more user friendly. I want 5-10 apps AT MOST for my daughter to choose from on the home screen .... have you seen toddlers and buttons??? They want to touch them all...and they have the attention span of a squirrel. Whoever designed this interface for kids doesn't have young ones... I don't want to have to sit next to her and "manage/monitor" her every move. There are thousands of options for a young kid - Feels like amazon threw up their content all at once and whatever THEY choose - not the parent. My ipad 2, though slow, is a WAY better option. I bought this Fire to replace that, but i think this fire is getting returned. It's unfortunate b/c otherwise it would be a great option.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kids unlimited is a dumpster fire
Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2020
Color: BlueStyle: Kids Fire HD 8Verified Purchase
Terrible device to get for your kid! It's slow to load or download anything and the kids unlimited is a joke. They claim this is a great device for kids and you can use parental controls to limit what your kids use on it. It's totally the opposite. Kids Unlimited gives your kid access to thousands of apps and media that amazon deems fine for your kid. You have no control how they access it. Sure you can go in and manually remove specific apps or videos but there is so much crap. It's a full-time job to manage. Amazon has a corrupt vision for this product because they could come up with a simple setting that lets you limit what they download or approve it. They just say here's everything kids go nuts. You could just disable kids unlimited all together but then you have to pay for each individual app you want to load... its nonsense. Since there is a neverending list of apps my kid just keeps downloading more and more. I can't prevent it or set a limit. Soon the device is out of storage and nothing will open and all the apps are stuck trying to download and my kid is upset because from their perspective all the apps are broken. Now I have to wipe the whole thing clean and set it up again fresh. Get your crap together amazon and make a product that actually works for kids.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disney Plus Cannot Download Video to External Storage for Child Profile
Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2020
Color: PinkStyle: Kids Fire HD 8Verified Purchase
So think you're going to purchase this and the expandable storage and get full access to the SD storage, but no. The engineers at amazon will only allow the SD storage to be used for video/movie content for the parent profiles. Really, not sure how this is "protecting" kids, but also when you mark the SD as internal storage it doesn't get used as such. Therefore there is a very limited amount of content that you can use on the expandable storage for a child's profile. I don't want my kids having an adult profile though. Really, I'd like to know who set this feature and give them a piece of my mind. And, it took forever for me to realize that this was the issue. This needs to be fixed, there is no reason for this to be in place and it severely limits the use of the tablet when you are driving. I don't want my kid on my hotspot streaming Disney Plus, I want them on the downloaded content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy for kids!!!
Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2020

My sons only 2 so I was skeptical if I should introduce such a thing to him, but friends and family encouraged me that its easily controlled with timers and activities and very educational an it truly is! we never allowed him to play with our phones so I expected a big learning curve and he adapted instantly! I hadn't introduced puzzles to him yet figuring it might be too advanced and to my surprise it was as if he had done it all before! I was shocked and impressed I actually felt ashamed that a stupid tablet taught him somthing that i didnt! Theres tons of games for younger children feeding animals, cleaning up, making food, washing trucks its great! Its surprising to watch everything he knows naturally or knew already! Its easily controlled for age appropriate things and timers for weekdays and weekends. I was also able to add Netflix and Disney plus for when we're on the go. If you make the rules clear in the beginning, i really don't see a problem with screen use we haven't experienced a melt down yet. Also the very 1st day he stood right on top of the screen but it wasn't damaged at all! Hes fallen down on tile with it.. no issue and it was in a blanket that I shook out and it went flying across the room with no issue! so this thing is sturdy!! Overly protective, helicopter mom approved!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tablet for my 4 year old

Based on the reviews I wasn't sure we would like the tablet. I ordered it anyway cause my toddler would use our phones and download all sorts of apps with ads popping up constantly. I really love this tablet. It gives my 4 year old some educational games to play, videos to watch, books to read, plus I added Netflix and Disney+ for her. She is happy and entertained during our summer at home. I think its great and I have not had any glitches plus battery life is good as well. Set up was super easy.
