How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

1.0 out of 5 starsNO PARENTAL CONTROL UNLESS YPU PAY UP 3$ A MONTH, CONSTANT ISSUES
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020
WHAT THEY DONT TELL YOU...is that you have no parental controls anymore UNLESS you pay up 3$ a month for kids+ that gives you the parental control that you expect from this out of the box. The hardware and software are in the Kindle already, but they put a pay wall between you and accessing it. This is so unethical I will be making amazon pay for this with many many returns and lots of b.s.
Also, You have no control over what amazon puts on your childs home screen. Why amazon feels it is acceptable to put Marxist anti american propoganda on your childs home screen is a point of concern. They say you have complete control but you have none.

DO NOT BUY THESE FOR YOUR CHILDREN unless you enjoy watching them cry in dissapointment when thr kindle dosent do what it is supposed to, everyday. The apps CONSTANTLY crash or just dont work to begin with.
And why is spanish content recommended to my child when we specifically select ENGLISH when you set it up? Again, you have no control over this either.

No way to remove news stories from the tablet.
I don't know why they think content about cop killings are appropriate for a kids tablet.

1.0 out of 5 stars WAY Too Much Content for a Kid, Not Enough Parental Control
Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2020
Color: BlueStyle: Kids Fire HD 8Verified Purchase
My in laws kindly purchased this for my 2.5 year old daughter to help with long distance car trip entertainment (if we ever go anywhere again), etc. I did a little research and agreed that it seemed like a good idea for her to have her own device as she’s mistakenly clicked into my messages and email on my iPad many times while watching the PBS Kids app and I was worried for the day my boss would get a weird cryptic message from her or my iPad would be locked for 10,000 years.

What I don’t like about this tablet:
- It comes with a free year of the Freetime kids app which is essentially a “kid-friendly” interface of tens of thousands of pieces of content (movies, games, books, etc). Apparently after a year you have to pay for this which already just feels like an annoying corporate scam.
-You can choose your age range to filter “age appropriate” content only. It gives literally tens of thousands of choices. We are very particular about the 5 or so shows that my daughter is allowed to watch and have actually taken time to pre-screen these 5 choices. Call me crazy, but I don’t feel a 2.5 year old needs full reign of 10,000 options of crap.
-There is a way you can search for specific to titles and block chunks of content. (Ex: If we don’t want her watching Barbie or Spongebob), but there are still thousands upon thousands of pieces of content that that we haven’t pre-screened nor would be able to or frankly want to. You can manually delete these but let’s be honest, as full time working parents while taking care of a toddler at home during a pandemic, this is the last thing we want to do with our 30 mins of our own “free time” before bed before we have to clean, prep, and pass out on the couch of exhaustion.
- There seemingly is no way to turn off aspects of Freetime like books (call us crazy, but we just read them the old fashioned way with our daughter still instead of on a screen) or games (she barely understands the plot of Sesame Street and why some parts have cartoons and some have real people- she’s not ready for games yet).
-You can’t pin your favorite content to the top so she at very least could just see that.
- The user interface was (obviously this is a personal opinion) terrible. Maybe I sound like a snob because for being an Apple person, but it took me ages and several blog posts just to figure out how to get to the manage permissions section.

Overall, I get why this is appealing for some people- turn on the thing and let your kids go. There are time limits and goals you can set up which are perhaps good for older kids who aren’t being monitored in their use as much, but for a young child you’d be there anyways monitoring and saying “5 more minutes before we go out and play!” (So that you can get the fun times of them audibly groaning at you, while also knowing that you- a real human parent- sets limits, not just a machine).

For us, it was just WAY too much content for little eyes to have access too and frankly that makes it not “age appropriate” (again one woman’s opinion). It’s nice to have this as a tool to help in those situations where you just need to get one flippin’ thing done without 300 “Mama!!!”s in a 60 second span, but also not have a tool that gives your toddler more content that they could possibly even comprehend. Why not give them a few more years before that??

In the end, I figured out how to add a guided control on my iPad so it locks the app she’s in. And I’ll buy a thick case and screen protector and call it a day. After going through the rigamarole, we decided that our 2.5 year old doesn’t beed her own device, yet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overall decent tablet for a kid
Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2020
Color: PurpleStyle: Kids Fire HD 8Verified Purchase
Bought this to entertain our 20 month old with movies will on an upcoming road trip. Overall I feel like it is a decent value.

Pros
- freetime unlimited is a great one stop place for kids entertainment.
- 2 year warranty if my kid destroys it
- case is big and soft, stand works well

Cons
- Tablet is very slow right out of the box, will probably be unusable in a year or so.
- cannot favorite certain apps in freetime for some reason, like nick jr. so you have to go looking for them everytime you want to run it.
- screen does not get very bright and it is hard to see in direct sunlight

You could get an iPad setup with the same case and freetime for about double the price but you don't get the warranty. If you want to use it as a tablet in addition to entertainment for your kids look elsewhere. If it's just for a kid then it's fine.

unable to download videos. Tablet keeps going offline. Added content and it keeps restarting the download and won't finish adding content. I ungraded to the new model from the last edition for my son's birthday and I regret that decision.

We love our tablet. My son is 3 and loves all the videos and games all educational! I get to set it up to where it’s age appropriate items and I can also switch profiles to mine and do things on my profile. Pretty great device and he can play on some apps without WiFi! Bigger plus. Great purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware - LIBERAL INDOCTRINATION of your toddlers
Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2020
Color: BlueStyle: Kids Fire HD 8Verified Purchase
My wife and I purchased two fire tablets - kids edition for my 2 year old and 5 year old. When you set up the tablet you select the content age range. I choose 2yrs - 8 years. Once set up is complete the Home Screen shows a suggestion of apps, books, videos etc.... There is a section called “Books that Inspire Change” and in this section are multiple books about Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, escaping from slavery...you get the point. Furthermore, in the History section you can not find a book about the founding of this country, almost every suggested book is about the slave trade as if that’s the only relevant history of this country. They sprinkled in a few books about dinosaurs, I assume to mask the indoctrination. I am soo disgusted!!! As a conservative I thought I had to worry only about liberal high school teachers and college professors poisoning my children with Marxist views, but No it is starting way earlier!!! BTW I did not find any suggested material about the birth of Christ (and it was Christmas) or any reference to God for that matter. Nothing about George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. This is really sad and says a lot about the direction of this country unless conservative parents start to stand up to protect our children from the constant attempt from the left to indoctrinate our children from an early age!

2.0 out of 5 stars Verify Content!! My A-Fire Came With A Political Agenda!!
Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2020

I bought this for my four year old. Mostly for educational fun. Overall the functions/operation are good. My biggest complaint is it comes with “free” pre-loaded political BS. Tons of Books & Apps pre loaded pushing politicians & political BS that is one sided. I don’t know who thought this was a good idea but I think it’s sickening. I don’t care what party you side with just stop trying to brainwash kids. If you purchase this please take the time to delete apps and books that come pre-loaded on the Fire. You may not approve of the political garbage that may be inappropriate for your child’s age. If I can’t make the apps and books go away I will be returning the item.
