Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
5.0 out of 5 starsSo glad this came out, just the upgrade our older kiddo needed

Allows my older child to do more things, I can approve purchases on my phone or by email, she can call me or her mom if she has wifi. Does more than the predecessor does, perfect for her growing maturity.
3.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t work well for ABC mouse..

I bought this specifically so my kiddo can do abc mouse. That’s it. We aren’t big on electronics in this house but figured a tablet is easier than the computer. Well. This tablet isn’t the right one for the job. All it does is freeze and not work for abc mouse.... it keeps saying it’s not connected to the internet when it clearly is. I’m going to have to return. It’s just not good enough to keep up with what we needed it for. I’m sure for games and movies it would be fine, but as I said we don’t do that in this house. Excessive screen time is unnecessary.
Pros: Touchscreen is pretty responsive given the price. The battery life seems overall decent.
Cons: The clarity of the screen is really something to be desired. Also, this tablet is pretty sluggish overall. The biggest thing for me was getting Google Play apps shared to my child's profile.
I got Google Play side-loaded just fine (as recommended by others) but it is impossible to share any of the downloaded apps with your Child's profile through Amazon Kids. It seems to only support the Amazon App Store.
I ended up dropping an extra $100 on a Lenovo M10 FHD Plus. It is 10", has double the RAM, double the storage (I opted for the 64GB model), better processor and a much higher quality screen. It may not come with the Amazon Kid's subscription but there are tons of other apps/subs that you can pay for from the Google Play store including many that are free without ads.
We got one Fire HD 8 kids, and one Fire HD 8 kids pro for our young children. I had been trying to set up the tablets before Christmas. There are tons of problems. To name a few:
1. Once the time limits, age restriction and some filters are set up, you are basically allowing your kid to consume 15,000+ books/videos/audiobooks/apps. If that's not what you have in mind in terms of parental control, then this is not for you.
2. I was trying to set up the tablets so both my wife and myself can manage them. I haven't been able to do it because the tablet would ask my wife to create a new PIN, then crashes every time. The tech support has not been able to solve the case.
3. Most of the necessary apps went missing on one of the tablets. Hard restart or factory reset couldn't solve it. They all came back suddenly after the tech support sent a replacement unit. I still don't know how it happened.
4. Sometime one of them stops charging and I'd have to restart it.
5. The parents dashboard looks slightly different on the website, the Amazon kids app, or on the Fire tablets. The interfaces are confusing, with features for Echo (I don't have any) and Alexa (I don't want to turn it one) mixing in that just shouldn't be there.
Overall, I can't believe after several years of these Fire HD Kids tablets on the market it still feels like they are half-baked. But if all you need is to throw a tablet to your kids to kill their time without worrying about them watching stuffs that are not age-appropriate, then this is worth it. I guess. After plucking my hairs for a week working with tech support.
Got these for my daughters. First off, set up my profile as the adult and wanted to set up my wife’s as well to use on the devices. However when trying to switch to her profile it got stuck in a loop asking to setup Lock Screen PIN, but wouldn’t let me set the PIN. Finally I just had to disable her profile. Huge software problem.
The various passwords and PINs are too complicated, the settings are hard to navigate, and the processor speed is terrible. For brand new devices these things run about as fast as the first iPhone I bought in 2008.
Finally, the whole Kids branding is just a bait and switch for yet another add on subscription from Amazon. When the first year of Kids+ expires the majority of device content will be useless.
I really want to love this product because it is such a reasonable price, but it is just not intuitive at all. I am usually really good with technology, but I have no idea what I’m doing on this thing. I want to organize the apps so they are easier to find. I can’t ever find what I’m looking for…it just drives me crazy every time I try to use it with my daughter. I just really wish it wasn’t so cluttered.
I had a lot of issues using it during a flight. I thought I downloaded episodes for my daughter to watch on the plane, but then I went back to the device and couldn’t find anything again. Just a nightmare for me.
The Amazon Kids content is very nice, but we have no intention of paying for it beyond the year that we get for free. However, I now realize that it will be virtually worthless without access to Amazon Kids, because you aren’t able to download anything that isn’t available from Amazon on a child’s profile. Many of the apps my son currently enjoys aren’t available from Amazon. You can download anything under the parents’ profiles, but then you have no parental controls. Waste of money as the children’s content is under Amazon monopoly.
The tablet is.. okay... the kid friendly portion is wonderful and the different accounts for parent portal I love. But it is slow, touch screen is glitchy and slow battery dies pretty quickly and coming from iPad took a little getting used to. My hopes aren't too high for this. But a good starter tablet for kids to get used to. So its not bad but not something I would buy again. My 10 yr old does not like using it compared to others.
My daughter got this on Christmas, I set everything up, shared apps from the parent account/parent dashboard and everything was fine for two days. She woke up Monday and everything that had been downloaded or shared was gone. I spent HOURS on live chat and the phone and nobody could fix it. Re-adding apps, removing her account and adding it again, restarting, hard restart, two full factory resets and then the said they would ship me a new one, it must be a technical issue with that specific tablet. Got the new one 1/30/21 and guess what….SAME THING!!!! Hours with customer service again, nobody can fix it. Currently waiting to hear back from them as they reached out to the manufacturers of the apps. I don’t know why it worked fine for two days and then everything disappeared or why Amazon doesn’t know how to fix this issue. My sons older fire tablet never had this issue.
When it worked my daughter loved it. However it lasted less than a month and completely quit working. Wouldn't turn on, wouldn't reboot, nothing. I called to get it replaced...which took forever and I was transferred at least 5 times and they said they would replace it with a new one and send it as soon as the UPS code was scanned. However, they didnt do that and instead first tried to rebuild it and it still wouldn't work and then they sent a refurbished one. It only lasted a month with very minimal usuaged...it should have been replaced with a new one...not one that also quit working.
So inconsistent. Sometimes it works great. Sometimes it just loads and loads and loads. We only purchased to watch movies while travelling. We download the movies ahead of time and half the time works fine. The other it just loads and load and loads and doesn't work. With a 2 year old on a 5 hour road trip this thing can make or break your trip. I do not recommend if you don't like screaming children and never ending loading.
I got my granddaughter one all the free games are so ad filled you have to watch to get any of the items needed to play the game it's silly. She loses interest right away and wants another game that is also full of ads. I tried buying one or two games for her and the tablet takes forever to load it never finished loading on one game. I will not buy again and may return this on. Her last kindle was not this annoying.
