5.0 out of 5 starsGarmin vs. Apple vs. Fitbit
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2021
While this isn’t a fancy Apple Watch, it does everything I needed it to without the jaw dropping cost. You also don’t have to pay a monthly membership to use features like O2 saturation the way you have to with FitBit watches. It also looks really nice. It tracks my heart rate, oxygen levels, sleep, steps, and much more. the watch does continuous heart rate monitoring, unlike the Apple which doesn’t. I can also alert my emergency contacts and send them my location if I need to. I purchased it more for medical reasons and I am very happy with this watch. Great price and better function for my needs.

3.0 out of 5 starsMissing very important features.

The watch does what it says it will do. However, it leaves out some very important features that are covered by the Forerunner and Fenix lines. If you are training and want insight for recovery and progress, this unit provides neither. No recovery time, no performance indicators or insight. Seems odd to leave that out, and those are important metrics for anyone into fitness. Actually, those are the MOST important metrics. (How hard did you push, are you progressing, how hard or easy to take the next workout, etc)

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!

I was a little bit hesitant to buy the Venu SQ because my last Garmin watch was so heavy on features that I didn't know how to use (and honestly don't need.) If you're like me, a casual athlete, maybe you're into fitness walking or doing light yoga... or even a new runner, this is probably the watch for you. It doesn't have all of the frills of some of Garmin's other products, and it is very simple to navigate! I'm all about simplicity because I'm kind of "computer stupid." You should get it. You'll be pleasantly surprised like I was!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this Garmin!
Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2021

First off, I'm a personal trainer and triathlete, and I've been a Garmin fan for years - their devices last a long time, and are the best at fitness tracking. Have been using a 920XT for maybe 10 years(?) now and it's still working great. What I loved about it most was the triathlon mode, and loved least was the Dick Tracy watch size of the thing. I was hesistant to switch to wrist-based HRM at first, but I think the tech on these has improved dramatically, as shown by my new Garmin Venu. Here are my pro's & con's:
Pro's:
- Lightweight, extremely comfortable, no metal in the buckle (I'm allergic to nickel, used in most watch buckles)
- Beautiful screen, easy to navigate and set up (like my 920XT was)
- Battery life is as promised. I'm getting about 7 or 8 days before needing to recharge.
- Accurate HR, sleep, and run tracking - again, a Garmin strength
- The lavendar is an absolutely gorgeous color
- Accompanying phone app is Garmin's standard app, with lots of good information and easy to build workouts (but I'd recommend doing this on the web app instead.)
- Garmin syncs to Final Surge, the online training log app I use
- Has all the exercise modalities I use, and lots more: swimming outdoors, swimming in pool, biking indoors, bike outside, run indoors, run track, run outside/road, yoga, strength training, hiking.
- Allows me to see phone notifications (that I want to see, can shut off those I don't) and quickly dismiss incoming calls (like those annoying daily car warranty robocalls)
Cons:
- When running outdoors and doing intervals, it doesn't "beep" very loudly at all - it's mostly a vibration. Wish this were louder, as my 920XT was.
- Step tracking isn't very accurate - but I have yet to find ANY device that does this well. It's all based on arm movements. I did 15 steps today before getting out of bed! But seriously, don't let this discourage you...it's as good a step tracker as anything else out there.
- The strength training mode is a little wonky - haven't figured out how it supposedly counts reps. But I just tend to ignore that anyway, as my strength training for myself and my clients is very movement-oriented, not just stationary lifts.
- This model doesn't download music (there's a more expensive version if you want that). But personally this was irrelevant to me as I play my music through a bluetooth speaker when I'm inside, and I don't listen to music at all when I'm training outside.
- The price is a little high as this category of devices goes, but way cheaper than an Apple watch and without all the excess fluff those have. But much, much better than a $35-$45 cheap fitness watch. You get what you pay for.
Overall I highly recommend this watch for any fitness enthusiast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not keeping it because of Garmin's terrible sleep tracking
Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2020
Color: Slate BandStyle: Venu SqPattern Name: SmartwatchVerified Purchase
I've had a Fitbit Charge 3 since late 2018 and have been quite happy with it, except for the poor selection of watch faces. I wanted to see if there are better options out there now since it's been two years, so I tried the new Fitbit Sense and was very disappointed to say the least. That got me curious about Garmin, which resulted in my giving the Venu Sq a shot.

If you don't mind a pretty bumpy setup process and spending a while configuring everything to your satisfaction, you're going to love this watch. I know I did. It's responsive, aesthetically pleasing, and straightforward about pretty much everything it shows you. The battery life is excellent, even with the SpO2 meter enabled during sleep (if it can even tell when you're sleeping... more on that in a moment). I can't comment much on activity tracking, as all I did was walk a couple miles with it on, which it handled just fine. The Garmin Connect app needs some polish, but clearly a lot of attention has gone into it, and there are some fantastic metrics to pore over if you're into that. I was not at all impressed by their app store, the Connect IQ Store.

All that said, I decided not to keep this watch because Garmin's sleep tracking technology is absolute garbage. I take a lot of naps, and Garmin not only can't detect them automatically, but doesn't even let you enter them manually. What genius at Garmin decided everyone only sleeps once per day, and during a pre-determined window of time? Ridiculous. Fitbit's got some serious problems of their own, but their sleep detection is light years ahead of this! I know Garmin's focused on athletics and nitty-gritty metrics, but this was a deal breaker for me.

There are quite a few things wrong with the product. First, all the amazon revit are for Garmin Venu or something like that. I have no idea why that product review is relevant for this one. So the reviews are wrong and misleading.

This is product review for Garmin Venu Sq. I bought it with full price from Amazon. It is a glorified healttracker. Yes, there is a screen but its funtionality is very limited. The watch is focused towards health tracking. All the health tracking functionality works perfect. I was impressed with the health stat tracking.

In terms of screen fluidity, I found the screen is hard to use, it is jittery and the response is awefully slow. For example I tap on some button and swipe the screen after that, you would never know what gonna happen. You need to wait a few second after you tapping on something. The worst part is tap doesn't always work. So, I found it extremely difficult to use this product as smart watch.

Some of the smartwatch functionality such as notification works fine. The screen resolution is not very good but it is workable.

Finally the belt. As you probably can see from the picture the belt is causing allergic reaction for my skin. Now may or may not happen for everybody but I am certain the reaction is not unique to my skin. The belt need to be avoided at any cost. Overall it was a bad experience for me and I recommend avoiding this watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars A useful full featured smart watch loaded with useful trackers and individualized health information

I am very pleased with the Venu 2s. I was astonished at the breadth and depth of the information this watch provides.

In addition to a wide selection of activities to monitor, the information on general state of health and on quality of sleep is impressive and useful. I thought the "Body Battery" feature might be a useless feature, but it provides good hints on how to stay balanced - to budget - exertions throughout the day based on your activity level, sleep quality and more.

The "Fitness Age" calculation was also a surprise - mostly because it gave useful information on specific things to change to improve health

The display is a big step forward. I tried the Garmin Vivo Active line and found the display too dim for me. The Venu 2s is bright and readable while exercising.

Also before buying, I was concerned that the font size on the Venu 2s might be too small. I thought I might need to get the larger Venu 2, again I was pleasantly surprised: all the data is easy for me to read.

The support from Garmin is terrific. There are a lot of choices and features on the watch. Some of the navigation was a bit confusing to me. But the phone support was unhurried and thorough. The agent was very familiar with the product.

(A side note: I have used and like 4 or 5 different Fitbit products over the past 10 years or so. I bought their newest model - the Sense. Great display but I had to return it because of a terribly erratic heart rate sensor. Their customer support - once great - is now out sourced to people reading the same scripted documentation you can find online yourself. I was offered only time wasting fixes for a flaw that turned out to be well documented in consumer forums online. Fitbit has sunk low, IMO.)

The Garmin comes up to the quality of product I expected of them from years of using their car GPS devices. I am very pleased to have invested in this watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars This was a poor choice for me - what about you?
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2020

The seller was great - not so much my choice.
I've owner and still own multiple Garmin products. I loved my Vivoactive 3 music but after 2 years it broke were the strap pins attached so I needed a new watch if I wanted it attached to my wrist rather than having a pocket watch that would not pickup my heart rate (the watch is still fully functional).. This watch is functionally the same, with a different display. I chose it because I wanted the square watch face. It's the display that is the downside. If you are young and have sharp eyes you may love this display. It's small print and sharp. When I'm working out I prefer a display that has larger numbers that are easier to read, and are always on. To save battery life (display is power hungry compared to Vivoactive) it uses small fonts and turns off quickly. When I try to fast forward on podcasts the display shuts off before I complete the action and then it cancels the action. So, I should have bought the Vivoactive 4 for the same price and I would be much happier with my purchase choice. The Vivoactive 4, it appears is the same watch with the older display that stays on and has larger fonts but is not as pretty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fitness & Smartwatch addict

I have (had) many Garmin and Samsung watches over the last 6 years, including the fenix series.

I go back and forth on fitness/battery and smartwatch/pretty screen. Venu 2 corrects the pretty screen and battery life is excellent. With 30 minutes of GPS per day and typical settings, text and email notifications, Sp02 turned OFF, I could easily go 6 days. But my typical pattern is use it for 3 to 4 days and charge when it's under 50%. Takes 30 minutes to charge in 50% battery scenario. Battery charging time is around an hour and very fast to 90%.

New interface with glances is basically awesome. The old way of swiping through every widget is cumbersome and was one thing I love about Samsung with the physical dial, to quickly scroll through widgets. The glances are more like scrolling a web page and clicking a link and it makes total sense.

I exercise regularly. I have used the typical routines many times. Run, Walk, Cardio, Bike, treadmill, they all work about the same as any previous units. I do like pairing to HR monitor for the HIIT, weightlifting, cardio, but not always. Heartrate accuracy is probably a little better than previous units, but it clearly still gets lost and can be slow to respond on cardio, HIIT and for sure on upper body weightlifting. If it makes you mad and it's not recording your Intensity Minutes because of it, pair it with a chest strap. It's the only way. : - )

One thing is for sure, Garmin will ALWAYS be recording something for HR. My Samsung watch will sometimes record HR, stops, starts again, and then estimates the calories based on an algorithm with very little input from intensity or HR.

I do love Garmin for the App, the way it tracks calories, and weekly intensity goals. It might overestimate calorie burn a little during workouts, but you won’t get too much extra credit for just being active otherwise during the day.

I have taken the “My Day” snapshot a few times. I have been notified my “Fitness Age” is dropping. These are new items on the Venu 2. Probably a little gimmicky, but I am sure it’s a good selling point for some. I do wish Garmin would add the advanced exercise options from the fenix or forerunner series. I don’t like digging through a bunch of menus to find my VO2 Max. That should be a glance! It makes no sense, and the competitors are putting the V02 Max and other advanced running information front and center now.

Last, and maybe the most important for many. Smartwatch. I do have an amazon prime account so it's nice to get that music on the unit "for included price". I realize many have Spotify, but I don't, so Amazon Music is nice for me. Although, I don't listen to music while exercising often. The notifications are bare minimum just like what pops up on the phone. It's Garmin, it's how it's always been and it's not the greatest if you want to interact with apps. You can respond with canned responses, but I really like my Samsung and interacting directly with text app and email app from watch. I just get tired of charging the Samsung.

I ended up keeping the larger “men’s” version and purchased a 45 mm rose gold bezel and rose gold 22mm strap on here. The Don Draper level of marketing Garmin has towards women is hilarious. Why would I pay the same price of the large watch for the small watch? Because the colors are pretty?! You’ll note all the photos of women wearing the smaller watch only aimed at we females to purchase what is obviously of less value in comparison for the same rate. The pics of me measuring with calipers show that with the black border the lcd isn’t even the size it’s advertised the screen is smaller than the Galaxy watch 42 I own. That being said the fitness features are superior to all the other fitness watches out there and the response time is so fast. You should be lifting weights like a pro in no time when you arrange workouts load them and get to it. Each exercise has an animated example. I love the Venu 2 but Garmin needs to get a grip with its sexist marketing. Obviously some people will prefer a smaller watch but price it at 350 and sell the large watch in “feminine “ colors as well so the marketing doesn’t look as 50’s Mad Men era it currently does.
