Downhill From Here-Alpine Valley
This video encapsulates the best Deads performance that I've seen. I also own other video's like View from the Vault I thru III, and Ticket To New Year's, Trucken Up To Buffalo, but in my opinion this concert takes me back to "being there" maybe it's because side profile shots of the band playing on stage, you can see the Dead Heads swaying in the upper seats in the background. The song-set also features many songs that I really like: Let the Good Times Roll, It's all Over Now, Desolation Row, Standing On the Moon, Uncle John's Band and Not Fade Away.
I'm envious of those of you, that got a chance to attend any Dead concert at Alpine Valley. But at least this video gives you the chance to grab a ticket and enjoy the concert.

Great quality, excellent song selection, and gives those watching the experience of being there. This was my first Grateful Dead show, and what a great show this is. From the fun Let the Good Times Roll, to the jams of China/Rider and Not Fade Away, to the spacey Uncle John's Band and Wheel, this show has it all. They had not played "Bid You Goodnight" for the 10 years prior to this show. Watch for the smiles from Jerry !

Yes, this does encompass the Dead over a three day run at Alpine which has been combined into one "show." But if you are going to buy one Dead DVD, this is the one. I have all of the Dead DVD's (and quite a few of the bootlegs) but this is the one I always put on to impress the unfaithful. The Dead are on fire on this DVD. Like a good story, they set the stage, and then they just build on it, song after song, until you just can't take it anymore.
In short, the single finest Dead DVD available.

Great setlist, even better performance. Jerry in particular is spry and nimble. My favorite DVD and despite other good shows from the late 80's period, this one is without competition far as released DVD's.

This video does an excellent job capturing the sound and feel of the Grateful Dead at Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI. All but the last three songs of the first set is from July 17, 1989, an excellent show. "Desolation Row & Deal" make it worth the combination of two seperate shows from the weekend. Tight shots of the band allow viewers a peek at how the Dead created their special sound. The full moon hanging over the stadium that night would have been a nice addition. A solid performance from Let the Good Times Roll to We Bid You Goodnight.

Downhill From Here - It's The Only Way!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 9, 2015
This is one of the best Grateful Dead concerts on film. Summer 1989 was definitely one of the band's several peaks, with their third major line-up, featuring Brent Mydland on keyboards. This Dvd and 'Truckin Up To Buffalo' are, in my view, the best presentations from that Summer.
Brent's addition to the band may initially have been surprising because his distinctive vocals altered the sound of the band, but he was just so good. He was a great songwriter and vocalist, he was probably the best keyboard player in the Dead's history, and his backing vocals improved every song that he sang on. He was also such a great character.
The concert was recorded at Alpine Valley Music Theatre. It is 150 minutes long, and the set list is simply awesome, including 'Cumberland Blues', 'Desolation Row' and a really great 'China Cat/I Know You Rider'. Totally recommended.
2015 is a big year for Deadheads. As well as celebrating 50 years since they formed, there are two notable anniversaries. August 9th will be the twentieth anniversary of Jerry's death, while 26th July is Brent's twenty-fifth anniversary. R.I.P Brent and Jerry.
UK viewers need to note that these Dvds are Region 1 format, so you require an all-region player.

Fantastic show of the band in one of their peak years. Well played and just an action-packed setlist.
