And it is especially in the latter criterion that these Hippeas Chickpea Tortilla Chips fall, well, flat.
If I am doing my math correctly, these cost about $1 an ounce at Amazon. Compare that to Doritos, which cost around 22 cents an ounce (and taste better and have better tensile strength, as other reviewers here have noted).
Are these chickpea chips worth a price four times more than Doritos? I think not, but fabulously wealthy Paltrovians may disagree!
The flavor of these chips isn't bad. The jalapeno cheddar flavor is sort of a muddled mess, but the ranch and sea salt flavors get the job done.
But as other reviewers have noted, the texture of these chips is not as crispy as Doritos or plain tortillas, and they have a sort of chalky mouth feel. I haven't tried loading these chips with dips, but I will trust other reviewers who say they snap easily under pressure.
Once again, I must pose a challenge to manufacturers of healthy snacks: when will you ever find a way to make your products as affordable as traditional unhealthy snacks? After years of organic farming, is that means of raising crops still so frigging expensive?
Heavy sigh... the quest for healthy, tasty, affordable snacks continues. Well, apples, pears, cherries, and bananas are all on Mother Nature's menu, and they're not bad at all!
The flavors are okay, better than the texture. Out of the three kinds in the variety pack (sea salt, jalapeño cheddar and ranch), I liked the simple salted flavor the best. The jalapeño cheddar flavor was okay too. But the texture needs work.
Although of course I like chips, I don't keep any in the house (except straight tortilla chips) because manufactured food just isn't something I need. These I can let pass as a healthy-enough snack.
The two flavored types remind you a bit of Doritos in flavor, but the texture is way different. And NOT different as in "not as good". Not even something that you have to get used to or something that you wish was something else. No, the texture is great. It reminds me of another snack, but I've been unable to figure out what. That said, these break up a little bit easier than other chips because of the chickpea flour, but mine came mostly in tact, and quite delicious.
The unflavored type can be such an excellent alternative to wheat crackers for so many things. Try it with beat hummus (think deconstructed hummus snack) or smoked goat's milk cheese. Or...anything, really. Frankly, I miss a lot of cold antipasti since trying to stop with the wheat, so I'll be looking for the plain hippeas sold by themselves for that reason. Not to dis the flavors, because I like those as well, but the plain really have a lot of great uses in my house.
2 Straight Up Sea Salt
2 Rockin’ Ranch
2 Jalapeno Vegan Cheddar
I did a taste test with all my family members and the one thing we agreed on is that these chips taste like crumbly wood chips. The texture is not appealing at all. There is no traditional potato chip crunch. There is a kind of sandy flavor of what each one claims to be. And by that I mean it was a little like munching on something between dirt and softened wood chips. I don't know how else to describe it. No one thought the Jalapeno flavor was spicy at all. Personally I tasted a light aftertaste spark... but no fire.
Perhaps I should have shared this with some vegan friends. I feel they have adapted to lesser things to follow their diets. This is not something we would purchase again. But maybe I am the wrong audience for this. And for 5 bucks a bag... not a good value for us.
Since the vegan aspects are not important to us, the taste enjoyment quality is not there for us.
