If I'm installing this on my computer, do I still need the HP Smart app?

Yes. All users must download and install the HP Smart app in order to set up and use the printer. The HP Smart app is available on a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets and computers.

What is the HP Smart app?

It is a printer software application that is required to set up the printer and print from mobile and computer devices.

Why should I use the HP Smart app?

The HP Smart app makes setup, printing and scanning easier than ever. It will help you connect to Wi-Fi, install drivers, load paper, install ink cartridges, register for an HP account and sign up for Instant Ink (where available).

What should I do if I can't find my printer on the HP Smart app during setup?

Wait for the printer light to turn purple before starting setup. This means the printer is in Wi-Fi setup mode. If you still have issues, restart setup mode by pressing the Wi-Fi button on the back of the printer for 3 seconds.

If I'm having problems with my connection or printing from my PC, what can I do?

Download and install the HP Print Scan Doctor, which will help you resolve most issues, including Wi-Fi connection issues. It is available for Windows and will fix printing and scanning problems.

first off After a day filled with 3 men from India for over 2 hours and they still could not get this printer to work with
my apple computer. On top of that there are no pictures or screen to tell you what job you would like to do, they are pale little icons the occasionally light up. I have had many printers over the years and have never has there ben the problems that I have with setting up this printer. I am a 78 yr old woman and know how to set up and use a printer. The "helpful"fellows were of little use and disrepctul when I asked to repeat them selves over and over because could not understand there accent. Seniors in particular beware of this terrible computer printer. It will go back to amazon tomorrow. On top of that I could not order ink cartridge for this computer #67 anywhere.

We just opened this product and so far, it’s great! Instructions were very easy for set up and the print quality is nice. You have the option to set up via your mobile device or computer through the HP Smart App. I did the set up from my iPhone and it walked me through everything step by step.

We are using this printer for our kids school work, personal and some business, but no heavy printing. If your need is similar, I recommend this product. We have not opted in the ink program yet but it didn’t force me to. Hope this helps! :)

Update: I opted into the ink program and love it. It seems to be a big savings on ink and it’s nice that the cartridges are shipped when we need them. It’s been a few months now and I’m still very happy with this printer.

This thing is the biggest pile of garbage. I spent over an hour on hold for technical support only to get disconnected after being passed between two of the online chat agents and getting dropped.

The thing jams halfway through each print job. When you clear the jam it doesn't allow you to continue the print job, it has to start over after printing a printer information page. Good way to rope you into using 3x as much ink as necessary.

Also this "wireless" printer must be connected by USB (not included) to your computer for setup.

HP Smart WIFI problems

This is my first time ever writing a review. Well my printer did not connect via hp smart. The box did not include anything helpful to describe what to do if you don’t connect. I found a users manual online and it said to press the wifi button on the back of the printer for 5 seconds. Hp smart still did not work. My main use for my printer is printing from a laptop. So, after hours of searching I found Hp Easy Start and installed software to connect my printer to my laptop. What is so maddening about this is that every time I went to Hp they kept directing me to Hp smart.

UPDATE: I've used it several times, it does freeze up occasionally and I have to unplug it and plug it back in but it gets the job done.

This printer froze up and stopped responding completely after 3 print jobs. I just got this printer yesterday. Such a waste of money!!! I'm so disappointed.

After installing Catalina on my Apple iMac I couldn't get the computer to recognize my old printer. I spent hours reading reviews and for every printer that had reviews saying it worked seamlessly with their Mac, there were also a handful of reviews by people saying the same printer WOULDN'T work with their Mac. I crossed my fingers and bought this one and so far, so good. Set up was a breeze. I had to download the HP Smart app to do the setup, but that wasn't a problem and it worked perfectly. Set up took about 10 minutes. Quality is great for my needs.
