How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsIf you want bluebirds
Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2018
Okay, dried mealworms does sound really gross. I live in the Carlisle- Harrisburg section of PA and two years ago we found a birdbath heater would result in, literally, over 10 bluebirds around our birdbath on really, really cold days. Last year, I ordered 5 pounds of dried mealworms and ended up with bluebirds in my back yard on a regular basis. This year I went nuts and ordered this package of mealworms. Eleven pounds does not sound like much until it arrives and it is as big as a 50 pound bag of oil sunflower seeds. I am getting bluebirds, house finches, Carolina whens, and the odd starling every day. I am putting out a measuring cup full of mealworms each day. The birds love it and I calculate I will have dried mealworms until sometime in March. I will never eat dried mealworms but this product consists of complete mealworms and not broken pieces. Our birds love them.

Very disappointed that the Product Information says these are sourced in American Samoa. But in truth, they come from China. Not at all happy about that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicken crack

Tractor Supply has them on sale for the same price and weight, but without the handy zip-lock bag these come in - or the handy Prime delivery.
Chickens go absolutely nuts for these when I open the bag. They're like dogs with meat scraps. Re-up as needed. I anticipate these would be a handy training tool for free-rangers and getting them to come back to the coop. My chickens are totally addicted.
I heard you can grow your own worms, but it's a slow process and you have worms growing in a drawer eating oatmeal.
But, I guess if you can afford these, it's a sign you're doing well financially - and that should make you feel pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Birds love it, so I do too

I feed a handful of meal worms with sunflower seed in my wild bird feeders. It's the first thing that gets snapped up. I was buying it in pet stores but that was pretty expensive. These worms are large and well dried. Since the worms are dried and light, 11 pounds is a huge bag (size of a 40 lb bag of pet food)and should last me for months.I also put meal worms in my home made suet treats; 1 jar of crunchy peanut butter, 1 lb block of lard, 2 cups coarse corn meal (or more, enough to make it less greasy), 1 cup soaked, drained and chopped raisins and cranberries, 1 cup chopped mixed nuts and 2 cups meal worms. Place first 2 in a large sauce pan, heat on low until melted and add the cornmeal. Add rest of optional ingredients. Smear on a tree trunk, or suet spread feeder. Especially loved by woodpeckers and nuthatches. Keep it in the fridge or freezer- in the winter I just keep it in the shed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The bluebirds give it two thumbs up (if they had thumbs)!

We always had a few bluebirds at our feeders (seed and suet). There has been an explosion of bluebirds since I started putting out the bulk dried mealworms. I'll fill the feeder with 4 or 5 scoops and walk away from the feeder. There won't be a bird in sight. By the time I go into the house and turn around there are 7 or 8 bluebirds wing-to-wing around the feeder with 10 or more circling above or perched elsewhere waiting for their turn. I have to refill the feeder at least twice a day--so the really good price for 11 lbs is a big help. I'm really, really pleased with this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small Rocks Included --
Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2019

I'm new to the larger size (11lb) bag of this company/distributor - and I grind the dried mealworms for a wild bird formula. Unfortunately - this larger bag recently purchased also contains a number of small stones - about a quarter-inch in size, but enough to knick the mini-chopper I use to prepare them. If you are feeding these to chickens, outdoor birds, etc. the small stones WON'T hurt them to eat, of course - but if you are using them in any other type of preparation, please be advised!

Addition to this review - REALLY full of rocks - I'm near to the end of the bag now, and there are... a lot... of ... rocks.

And, of course - no one wants to pay for stones they didn't order, so there's that. These stones are light enough not to drop to the bottom of the sack of worms, I've used only a 4th of the bag, if that - so there's no good way to merely shake them to the bottom.

Also, this bag is rather stiff plastic, and rather than bending - it splits. So you might want to decant the worms into other containers - as mine split down the long way, sending worms cascading everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping Chickens Happy
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2021

I bought these after the ones that I normally order were out of stock and I am extremely surprised at how much more volume is in this compared to a like brand. Our girls (chickens) love pecking at these and are making their winter a lot better since the fresh bugs are not out in the snow while free ranging. One or two handfuls a day keeps our 9 girls happy. I will definitely be buying these again over the other brand. I can fill almost 2 5 gallon food safe buckets over the 1 and a little more of the other brand. The worms are thinner and longer than the other brand but frankly chickens don't care and they eat all of them.

We are feeding our spoiled Guineas every evening their mealworms which they enjoy & look forward to ! They also think the fire pit is for them ! The mealworms are great & always important for their growth . We give them all year long all though they slow down a little during summer since we have plenty of fat bugs & ticks for them !

I can't imagine anything more unappetizing than dried mealworms, but even the squirrels eat this. I bought it for the bluebirds, but robins, blackbirds, wrens, etc. all flock to it. I easily go through 25# a month -- and I usually have to start rationing it before my next delivery. Wish it weren't so expensive, but I can't find it cheaper anywhere else. And once you've seen bluebird parents feeding their babies, you don't want to be without it.

These worms are packed very well (double boxed) so that they are not all broken up when received. I feed literally hundreds of wild birds daily and they go through this bag within 4 days now that my adult birds have had baby birds. I do recommend these as it seems that all wild birds (blue jays, mockingbirds, Eastern blue birds, starlings, robins, Carolina Wren, Grackles, Crows, etc.) love them.

High quality mealworms. I use two worm feeders along with 4 other type bird feeders. A huge variety of birds now empty the mealworm feeders in about a day and a half. Even the robin size and larger have gone after the mealworms. Small birds don’t usually eat them.Very consistent high quality worms, even the red bellied and downy woodpeckers snack on these worms. They are slightly cheaper than other brands and I use about 40 pounds a season. I refill about once every 4 or so days so the birds go after the cheaper seed feeders when they finish the mealworms.
