Horrible adaptation brings shame to the name

I remember watching this when it first aired, it was horrible then and it is horrible now. For those who don't remember, the reason why this ends the way it does isn't because it is a movie with a planned but never made sequel. In-fact, this isn't a movie at all it is a pilot for a TV series that was never made because the pilot rated so horridly. And understandably so, Verne is IMHO (and the opinions of a good deal of other people) one of the great science fiction authors of all time. This pilot is a disgrace to the story, and a shameful attempt to score a buck based off the name of a classic and a vague concept rather than making any effort to bring an updated perspective while staying true to a stunning story. Even as bad made for TV adaptations go this is just plain bad. Unless you really want to waste your time and watch something really stupid avoid this at all costs. Go find a copy of the 1959 classic adaptation, or better yet pick up the novel and enjoy the story in it's original form.

Thank goodness the TV series wasn't made

I didn’t expect much, but I expected more. Being made in 1993 you can forgive the hokey special effects, costumes and make up. The entire budget must have been used up making fake rocks. They have this massive ship and the only part of the inside you ever see is the control room (with the same switches being flipped over and over again) and the common room with their individual sleeping tubes. In a ship this size they couldn't find room for quarters with a little privacy? No budget.

Every time this story is redone it’s worse than the one before. Spoiler alert: Professor Harlech didn’t die in the beginning. In the end we find that he is the evil creature hooked up to the chemical apparatus. You watch his repeated inept attempts to obtain the one piece of the “book” that John Neville happens to have and you are left wondering how he ended up there, how he is in control of all the other creatures, how he turned evil, how he came into possession of most of this “book” and a thousand other unanswered questions when the movie ends. Questions that never would have been answered if this pilot had ever been made into the planned TV series. With Neville’s rich history it’s unknown why he would have agreed to be part of this trash. He must have owed someone big, did a favor for a friend or was just plain bored. Most of the actors weren’t particularly bad. They just had nothing to work with. No doubt anyone who played a Trog in the movie is thankful their faces were covered. This is just another movie where you feel sorry for everyone involved and you know they wish they could wipe it from their resume’s. Thank goodness the TV series was never made. This was bad even for 1993. Perhaps if they had found a decent director and decent writers...

It's not the popular one with Pat Boone and Jason Mason

This one's a baaaaad bad movie. Not in bad in a good way. It's so bad they had to use a screen shot teaser of the famous movie with James Mason and Pat Boone. This is a sorry way of hook, line and sinker to get you watch this movie. It is nothing related to the popular one. Bait and switch all the way. I'd give 0 stars if possible.

Junk

This was just a junk heap, bad all the way around. It even took 30 min just to get to the "journey" part, if this was shooting for B flick status it fell short, I'd say it made it to at best a C-. More on par with cheesy 70s & 80s Saturday morning TV shows.

Worst adaptation ever

There have been any number of movies based on the Jules Verne novel, in one form or the other. Journey to the center of the earth, to islands, to where ever.

I have not seen them all, but have seen many and this is by far the worst.

It is also arrogant in that the ending of this yuchie piece of work leaves basis questions open so that one must wait for the sequel, which thankfully never came.

Current Amazon graphic incorrectly show James Mason & company from the 1959 classic version.

This movie is a childish remake not worthy of anyone's time.

Waste of time

Don't get lured in to spending time with this. It is a train wreck. Bad story, bad pacing, bad graphics (it's too old for CGI), and bad acting. I wasted forty minutes of my life on this thing. Learn from my mistake.
