5.0 out of 5 starsThe one to buy if local control is your thing.
Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2021
As a software engineer and home automation enthusiast, it's rare that I find an electronic gadget that does exactly what I want. When I do, I buy a few, even having no immediate plans for them, because I never know when they'll be discontinued and replaced by a newer version that just doesn't work as well. This Kasa smart outlet from TP-Link is one such diamond in the rough. After putting one into operation, I have purchased four more just to have on hand.

The deciding factor? Total local control. I hate IoT gadgets that depend on "The Cloud" for part or all of their functionality, as their usefulness diminishes or disappears when their manufacturers eventually go under, get acquired, or simply decide they no longer want to support their older product lines. These Kasa smart outlets work without needing to "phone home." In fact, I blocked my unit's MAC address in my router's firewall so that it *can't* reach the Internet, as I have security concerns about IoT gadgets, and it's still completely usable via a local protocol over my LAN. Of course, cloud-based integrations won't work in this configuration, but that doesn't bother me.

I especially appreciate that the energy monitor features of the KP115 are accessible over the local protocol, too. The only feature that might not work without giving the unit Internet access is the scheduling feature, as the unit can't set its internal clock without Internet access. (I haven't investigated whether there's a local command to set the clock.) [UPDATE 2021-09-07: The device does have a command that allows setting its internal clock. Once the clock is set, the device starts saving per-day and per-month energy usage statistics, which are retrievable via the local protocol.] But I wouldn't do scheduling on the device itself anyway; I'd do it in home automation software. I only need the device to switch on and off when commanded and to do so reliably, and to that end the KP115 works a treat, especially for the price. You can't buy a Kill-A-Watt meter for this price, and those don't have Wi-Fi or switching capability. Moreover, the readings of voltage, current, power, and energy have greater precision than on the Kill-A-Watt. Only disadvantage, if you could call it that, is that the Kasa doesn't have a display; you have to read the meters via Wi-Fi. No big deal for me. The energy consumption meter *does* survive loss of power. There is a local command to reset it to zero.

Aside from the local control aspect, the physical unit is attractive and sleek. It does not block the other receptacle in a duplex outlet. The blue power indicator LED, which lights when the switch is closed, can be disabled if you find it distracting. The mechanical switch does make a click when toggled, but it's not too loud. The switch remains in its current state when the unit loses power and will remain in that state when power is again applied, and no click is heard at either point. I take this to mean that the switch is not a simple relay and is in fact a bi-stable mechanism, probably one that consumes essentially no power except when transitioning between states. The contacts are rated for 15A.

So, in summary, the Kasa KP115 is an EXCELLENT smart outlet if you, like me, are wary of giving closed-source (unauditable) devices access to the Internet in your home or simply don't want the devices you buy today to become landfill when the companies that made them give up on supporting them. As long as 2.4GHz 802.11n continues to be implemented by home Wi-Fi networks, these KP115 smart outlets should continue to do their job admirably.

1.0 out of 5 starsDO NOT USE FOR CONSTANT LOADS ABOVE 900 WATTS!
Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2021
This plug is dangerous! Even though its "rated" at 15A and 1.8KW for its "maximum load", just a little under 1000 watts and 9 amps continuous load this device was hot to the touch, exceeding in upwards of 108* F. I cant imagine how hot this thing gets if you get anywhere near the max load. I can confirm the load I was monitoring is only around 975 watts and 8 Amps with a Kill-A-Watt, so I know for a fact I wasnt exceeding the listed limits. If the outside temperature of this device was hitting 108 degrees, I cant imagine how hot the internals were getting. The design definitely should be reconsidered with active cooling or better heat dissipation because this is going to start fires. I ordered two of these, but Im cautious about even plugging it in with what happened with this one, and I cant imagine it would work any differently.

Forget about hooking this up to a high power draw appliance or device, youre playing with fire, literally.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic smart plug but inaccurate power measurement and not much functionality.
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2021
Style: Energy Monitoring 1-PackVerified Purchase
As a smart plug... it's a regular TP-Link smart plug.

The energy monitoring is not particularly accurate and not particularly functional. I compared the measurements from the plug against the measurements from a Kill-A-Watt power meter (which is kind of the reference for affordable consumer power meters), and the KP-115 smart plug consistently underestimated power usage by 20%. Also, it gives you total consumption for the day or week, but the actual *power* measurement in the Kasa app is an instantaneous measurement and it doesn't update automatically, and there's no extra functionality to see graphs or updates or anything. It's okay if you just want to see "how much power is this using *now*", but for the price premium I had really hoped to get more than that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to Setup- I had to dig up an OLD cell phone to set them up as my new one wouldn't do it.
Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2021
Style: Energy Monitoring 1-PackVerified Purchase
I have purchased smart switches from Kasa before and they were great. I bought 1 of the HS105 and 2 of the mini plugs a few years ago and they just about jumped out of the box and set themselves up. Not so with these.....

I bought 2 of this model and absolutely could not set them up with my Galaxy S20 phone. No matter what I tried, no matter how many times I reset the phone, the switch, my wifi connection, etc. No go. Finally my phone popped up a message that inspired me to dig out my old Galaxy S4 phone, plug it in for a while, install the app and try that. I was able to set up 1 of the switches but had to reset it several times in the process as the switch just wouldn't communicate with the phone unless I reset it and tried again. Each time getting a bit further along. Finally I was prompted for the wifi password and I was set. Updated the firmware and viola!

I went to setup #2- the app never asked me if the lights were flashing blue/orange. Reset the switch. Tried again. Got the question. Moved on. My phone told me it connected to the switch wifi, but the app couldn't see the switch (this was a re-occurring issue with the other one too). I reset the switch and then I was able to get it to connect. Entered the wifi password and it took it and the app said the switch was connecting to my network, but didn't. Unplugged the switch and plugged it back in and then the app asked me to name the switch. Done.

Then my Alexa app notified me of the new switches. I went into the Alexa app and they worked from there too.

Setup is the weak link. The S20 phone has security that is incompatible with the setup program. I think the phone thinks it is being hacked and blocks the intrusion. The real idiocy is when the app just sits there waiting for the switch but doesn't give you the opportunity to go backward in the setup process. I kept having to kill the app and restart it.

I'm pretty sure these will be my last set of Kasa products. They weren't the ones I really wanted this time (out of stock) but I didn't want to have to download yet another app, create yet another account, give it my network credentials, etc. etc. so I stuck with Kasa. I think next time I will research different brands and standardize on that one.

Zero stars for the setup process. 2 stars because I was finally able to get them working.

2.0 out of 5 stars Useful gadget for the first time out of curiosity, but not very useful overall.
Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2021

When you buy this smart plug, you use it for a couple of days out of curiosity, then you get it is not very useful. It is easier to go and turn on an electric device than playing with the smart application. For example if you schedule a kettle to boil water in the morning, you must not forget to turn on its button tonight, since a kettle automatically turned off after using.

The application Kasa has a not well designed interface.
Look at the plug specifications. Do you see max load 15A? Yes! Do you see max power? No!
Look at Kasa interface. Do you see real-time consumed current? No! Do you see real-time consumed power? Yes!

1.0 out of 5 stars WiFi connectivity issues, keep looking.

Constantly dropping WiFi connection even though signal is always in -40 to -45 range. Blue light blinks, unplug and plug back in almost immediately reconnects which proves WiFi was fine. Not great for automation, even worse if you wanted to use plug in difficult to get to location. Still have 2 that I'm putting up with, cancelled order for 5 more. Firmware reports as up to date. Junk.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment

I’m pretty big on Kasa smart plugs I have quite a few and they are a good value. The addition of energy usage to this one was poorly thought through. It isn’t worth the 2x cost, and it provides no history just current and average times over a week and month which is useless. To top it off if you are on the energy saver screen in the iOS app you need to exit it and return for it to update. A poorly thought through product you should avoid until they update the app to both show a daily history for at least a month (3 or a year would be better) and they let you reset the stats without resetting the device. This plug was created as an afterthought. Do not buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wemo-no more Kasa-ved the day my friends ! !
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022

While you can find ‘cheaper’ or ‘smaller’ smart plugs you must remember that half the beauty of it is if it & its company / app / features are, well, smart. It’s pointless to get a cheaper or smaller one just to end up constantly stressed from set-up trials to its apps functionality. This one is affordable AND the company is reliable in the quality of there products which is why I give this 4.5 Stars because it is one of the best smart plugs out there for this good of a price ( I’ll get to why not 5 in a moment )

For example as some others have said, with We-Mo you had to scan the plugs to use them which is extremely difficult when something is plugged in behind furniture or in my case ( as I am 5’1 … and a quarter - hey every little bit counts ! ) but Kasa was easy to set up and even easier to use !

I love that it has the sense feature - that is a HUGE plus for this price and this kind of solid company. As is the ability to set an an On as well as an Off timer in case you forget, and you can set it in a few different ways such as with the sun rise or set and with a set schedule on the app. Works seamlessly.

Only issue is what others have sad about the reality of it’s energy saving power and how what it actually uses being way more than what it claims.

But overall like I said at the start, it is worth paying a few extra dollars to not have your blood pressure and sanity tested by more difficult and time consuming ( ironic as they are suppose to be time and energy- both it’s and my own energy saving ) products when this Kasa one is a huge jump in quality and reliability. So go for it !

1.0 out of 5 stars Only get it if you have patience

My first one wouldn’t connect despite it being sent with the option to have it connected to my Alexa. I was sent a replacement and that one worked eventually.

I had to download the kasa app. After doing the same thing over and over it finally connected. You have to go to your wifi settings and connect to its (the plugs) wifi signal, go back to the app, it will search for it, then log into your wifi signal, and hope it connects. It finally worked after 40 minutes and multiple tries doing the same thing. Then after that you can go to your Alexa app and connect your kasa account to your alexa app, and then set up the plug there. The alexa plug I got for my mom was easier to set up than this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beast mode for your Sense
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2022

Living in California, I put on a sense monitor and have installed Solar Panels. Yet with rising electricity rates and Vampire loads growing over time. The sense just couldn't tell me what was going on. Yes my solar is bringing in this...and yes I am using this. Then it was giving me this always on reading and I am like is it my network, is it my????? What is always on...are the neighbors borrowing Power? LOL. I couldn't figure out for the life of me what is eating the electricity and the sense couldn't either. So I bought 8 of these and 5 of the HS300 PowerBars to get to the bottom of it. Plug them in...add them with the KASA app...Make sure to take your time...Also make sure you have 2.4ghz turned on your Router. Follow the directions and don't jump ahead in steps in the app (Like connecting to the plug early...it gets mad about that). Once they are connected, turn the feature on in the Sense -Settings-My Home-Connected Devices- TP-LINK.....Then let the sense start figuring things out. Been a few days but it seems to be putting the puzzle together now. Starting to make the Sense go for from Zero to Hero. I only wish the devices had a integrated lock out option (Software enabled, so no accidental shut offs could happen.) The Powerbars are also awesome just big.

4.0 out of 5 stars Several Kasa smart plugs to choose from, if you review yours, SPECIFY WHICH MODEL!
Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2022
Style: Energy Monitoring 1-PackVerified Purchase
Amazon has missed the boat here in that they are lumping together reviews for the KP115, HS103 and EP10. Unless the customer specifies which model they are reviewing you are in the dark, or at best you are guessing. I have several KP115's, a couple of HS103's and am shopping, trying to decide if I want some EP10's or more HS103's. Then, there's the HS105. The reviews here are little help because I usually can't tell what's being reviewed!

The KP115 is a lot more money but you get energy monitoring, which is something I want sometimes. Those other Kasa plugs lack that. There are questions about how much power the plugs support. Some say the HS103 only supports 12A. There's talk that later versions support 15A. Determining what yours supports is a mystery. There are reviews saying the EP10 can be difficult to install, others saying it isn't.

Overall, I'm happy with my HS103's and KP115's, but I'd like more. Deciding what to get is not easy given the uncertainties. Again, if you review your plug(s), please indicate which exact model you are talking about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will monitor dehumidifier with Home Assistant
Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2022
Style: Energy Monitoring 1-PackVerified Purchase
Purchased the energy monitoring version in order to know when the dehumidifier is full and needs to be emptied.

Plugged the unit into an outlet, installed the Kasa app and proceeded to install the unit into my the IoT portion of the network. Setup was quick, but I did not upgrade the firmware. I've read of some instances of the firmware update being incompatible with Home Assistant.

I then added the Kasa integration to Home Assistant and setup the unit.

From unboxing to availability in Home Assistant took less than 5-minutes.
