5.0 out of 5 stars Kirby 3D World
By Vincent on March 25, 2022
Kirby’s first 3D adventure. Kirby The Forgotten Land’s structure is like Super Mario 3D World. Linear selected levels with large open space to explore. Excellent level design, love the creativity of how everything is laid out.

Recent Kirby game series has always targeted younger audiences (can be toddlers first platforming game minus maybe the boss encounters, Treasure Road Challenge levels), but teens/adults can find charm in playing it. The core game is more focused on exploration, environmental (using Kirby’s abilities) problem solving than difficulty. Overall game is not challenging but has a lot of hidden areas/collectables. You can rush through but not as enjoyable unless you’re speed running, if this is your mindset then this game is probably not for you.

Two difficulty modes: Breezy and Wild

Breezy mode is ridiculously easy if you played any game before; gives you very generous health while limiting coins you can obtain.

Wild mode slightly more difficult, but not by much (think very easy mode in most other games).

Graphics are good especially the cutscenes and visual gags. Best looking Kirby game to date.

--Story/plot:

Kirby is riding around his warp star and sees a dark storm vortex cloud sucking in Waddle Dees. Ends up being sucked in also and lands in a post-apocalyptic looking world. Kirby finds out that Waddle Dees are being captured in cages and help save them. During his adventure he finds out the dimension/forgotten land he’s sucked into was destroyed by ID-F86 or part of it, and the villains of this world are trying to control/revive it and needs Waddle Dees to do forced labor (running in threadmills).

--Gameplay:

Main gimmick or feature in the game is Mouthful mode transformation where Kirby is nerfed and can’t swallow large objects all the way anymore and instead becomes it (example: car, vending machine, large traffic cone) with abilities. Kirby even has a journal entries reminisce about his past adventures. Anyway, like transformations in past games; only usable for a segment of the level before you hit a stop-gap where you have to give it up. Kirby also not able to float as much as his other games and gets out of breath easily

Kirby’s Copy abilities (12 total) are still present when you suck up enemies and steal their power like sword, boomerang, fire breath, throw bombs, etc.

Game does a excellent job integrating mouthful mode and copy abilities in its creative level design

There’s also an upgrade system for Kirby’s Copy abilities giving them more AOE range, higher overall damage, bounce off walls, more fast consecutive damage, and/or more defensive options. Similar to Ratchet & Clank power up upgrades. You can upgrade Kirby abilities through an-in game Waddle Dee shop via blueprints and stones you’ve collected

As you save Waddle Dees they form a town in a hub area where you can interact with them and upgrade abilities, play mini-games (like fishing, working fast food via QTE, moving ball Kirby through motion control maze, etc), and boss rush mode

There are several challenges per level giving you more re-playability by finding more collectables, defeat enemies a certain way/taking no dmg, solving a hidden puzzle, find hidden area, and/or saving all waddle dees in the level.

There’s also Treasure Road challenge levels where you must beat a stage with a set ability in a certain time frame

There’s a coin capsule machine which you spend coins to get random capsules with mini statues inside . No microtransactions in the game

There is drop-in/drop-out co-op where the second player plays Bandana Waddle Dee with a spear (cannot use any of Kirby’s special abilities/mouthful mode). Seeing the wide spaces in levels, movement is limited and centered around whoever is playing Kirby. If you drift too far apart then Bandana Waddle Dee will auto teleport to Kirby. Great for friends and family members to help in the adventure if they don’t want to play the main role themselves

Very fun Kirby game. Huge leap in enhancements for the series like how Elden Ring did to the Souls series, Zelda Breath of The Wild did for the Zelda series, Super Mario 64 did for Mario series
