This kit includes the mech itself, a much smaller minion mech, a house/building and a few extra areas for the six included minifigs to balance and position themselves. The mech itself towers above the rest, and has a staff that is unlike anything you've seen in other LEGO kits before.
The difficulty on this kit is appropriate for young kids around 8 if they have a good enough attention span and a bit of occasional adult oversight.
One big flaw in the set: the Warrior Mech's playability. When attempting to pose the model, it is quite unstable, even when simply pushing the leg forward a little, which screws with some of the poses that people might want to use it in. The build also has some fragile portions, particularly in the centre and the flags on the rear; these can easily fall off. The entire playability of this set is severely limited by the lack of stability and the flimsy components that appear.
Overall, whether you want to show or play with your sets determines whether this is a good set for you. If you prefer to play with your sets, you should avoid this one because the primary build has some frail areas and lacks stability in several postures. I recommend it if you wish to display your sets because it has a great design and a striking appearance.
This line of Legos is a tie-in to the television show Monkie Kid, available on Amazon Prime Video. That show is itself derived from the Chinese legend of the Monkey King. This is the first Lego line based on Chinese culture (not counting the Chinese New Year's sets).
I am reading too much in the reviews about this product line being targeted to boys. My daughter is a huge fan of mythology. She loves these Monkey King sets. I'm really not seeing them as gender specific, nor should they be.
The product line itself is all over the place. Some sets are clearly designed for active play, others more for display purposes. There's something here for everyone.
I have in my possession the following Monkey King Lego sets:
THE LEGENDARY FLOWER FRUIT MOUNTAIN
This is the set that made my daughter's eyes about pop out of her head. 1949 pieces. Ages 10+. The box is every bit as large as the largest Lego sets available, if not quite as thick as some. If you get just one set, this is the one I would start with. Key characters are included. It's an impressive set with both great play and display potential. Also, it's instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the legend.
MONKIE KID'S LION GUARDIAN
774 pieces. Ages 8+. The box is medium size. If you're looking for play potential, this is the set for you. The mech is more stable than the others. Mini figures and a villain are included. Not counting the wonderful Flower Fruit Mountain set, this is the set which has the most going on.
MONKIE KID'S CLOUD JET
529 pieces. Ages 8+. The box is medium size. This is a fun build made for play. Your kids are going to zip around the house flying this cloud jet.
SPIDER QUEEN'S ARACHNOID BASE
1170 pieces. Ages 9+. The box is medium-large. An interesting build which appears to be designed for active play but won't hold up especially well. Great display piece, though.
MONKEY KING WARRIOR MECH
1629 pieces. Ages 10+. The box is medium-large. This is an incredibly interesting build. It's great for display purposes, but less so for play. That said, at our house we tend to be more about the building. It's a great set.
DEMON BULL KING
1051 pieces. Ages 9+. The box is medium size. As with the Monkey King Warrior Mech, this is an interesting build which will be excellent for displaying but more limited when it comes to play potential.
As of this writing, the following sets also exist in this Lego product line:
TEAM SECRET HQ (looks like a boat)
RED SON'S INFERNO TRUCK
PIGSY'S FOOD TRUCK
IRON BULL TANK
WHITE DRAGON HORSE BIKE
THE FLAMING FOUNDRY
THE BONE DEMON
MONKIE KID'S CLOUD ROADSTER
PIGSY'S NOODLE TANK
SANDY'S POWER LOADER MECH
WHITE DRAGON HORSE JET
RED SON'S INFERNO JET
MONKIE KID'S CLOUD BIKE
Plenty to keep you busy!
My kids watched this series and move on Prime and this set was so fun to build. From the design to colors and design - it is fresh and the style is amazing!
With just 1,629 pieces this Amazing LEGO LEGO Monkie Kid: Monkey King Warrior Mech 80012. The instructions are easy to follow and my six and eight year olds were actually able to follow most of the instructions with minimal help - mostly they just needed help pushing down some of the tighter legs to snap on. Both of my children were so happy when they completed their step.
Overall this is an awesome lego set that will leave you feeling quiet accomplished after you get it put together.
The App Instructions are great to use as well - just in case you lose your paper book instructions.
Everything is so creative and thoughtful in regards to how things are built and designed!!!
