Does flossing really make a difference?
Along with brushing and using an essential oil-containing mouth rinse, flossing is an essential part of a daily oral health routine, and is recommended by the ADA.
Tips to help you start and maintain a flossing routine
- Start with modest goals—once or twice a week.
- Build towards every day—at least once a day flossing.
- Floss wherever and whenever—in the shower, watching TV, listening to music.
- Make it a routine—floss at the same time each day.
- Keep floss handy.
Remember that flossing should not be painful; but if it is, ask your dentist or hygienist to instruct you in proper flossing technique.
Find a floss that works best for you; flavored floss may make the experience more enjoyable:
- For a cleaner, fresh-breath feeling: Listerine Cool Mint Floss.
- For tight contacts and dental work: Listerine Ultraclean Floss.
- For tooth staining: Listerine Healthy Whitefloss.
- For sensitive gums: Listerine Gentle Gum Care Floss.
- For limited manual dexterity and first-time users: Listerine Ultraclean Access Flosser.
Directions:
- Clean between each tooth, making a “C” shape with the floss
- Gently slide floss in between teeth and gums
- Don’t forget back teeth
Make the bold move and go beyond brushing!

Ever wondered where Listerine rinse got its name?
Dr. Joseph Lawrence, the creator of Listerine mouthwash, wanted to name his work after a scientist who paved the way. Lister, an English doctor and surgeon, became the first surgeon to perform an operation in a chamber sterilized with pulverized antiseptic. The result? More patients survived than ever before. Inspired, Lawrence created a unique formulation of his own that was perfect for killing germs in tissues, like your mouth.

For years I had been using Reach Woven Floss, mint flavor. I bought a large quantity, maybe a 20 pack, years ago off Amazon. When I started running out, I noticed they changed the name to Listerine (for not apparent reason), and removed the Mint flavor. I was a little ticked off so I started shopping around, but nothing was quite the same in terms of comfort and thorough cleaning capability. So, I bit the bullet and bought some of the Listerine Cinnamon flavor and moved on.
Then, they discontinued all woven floss, for no reason whatsoever. I suspect it was a patent issue, or a production cost issue, or perhaps some product manager just made a decision without talking to their customers. I looked for it on eBay and elsewhere and it's priced like gold - $20-30/package. Ridiculous. So, I started shopping around for alternatives. I tried quite a few of the "woven" flosses and they are all pretty terrible, and also expensive in many cases. I don't like the expandable floss, and the charcoal floss seems like a dumb idea to me, especially given the black residue it sometimes left in my mouth.
I finally broke down and bought some of this, and it's reasonably decent. It doesn't tear easily, it's way better than just regular floss, it's infinitely better than the satin plastic stuff which in my opinion doesn't clean well at all. It will tear if you pull hard, but it's cheap and doesn't fray when it tears, so it's reasonable in that regard. It stretches, which I don't really care about, but it isn't annoying. The texture is better than straight plastic, which is very useful for cleaning.
After thinking about it, the stretch is a nice touch only for the health of my fingers - it prevents a little bit of the blood flow cut that occurs in non-stretchy floss.
I am giving it only 4 stars because of the product decisions of JNJ. Discontinuing Reach was not necessary. Discontinuing woven floss was not necessary, and created a black market of sorts for those who need it. Calling this Listerine is not necessary. Listerine in general is not necessary - read a little bit about the power of saliva, and how you don't get infections in open wounds in your mouth easily, and you'll realize you shouldn't be killing off microbes in your mouth with listerine (Gulp is a good book if you want to dig further into this).
But, amongst all possible floss options that are still available for purchase, this is my favorite.
I mean it. It's stretchy (rather than immobile) and slightly tacky (not sticky but not slippery either). All of this means it won't dig into your fingers, and it's easier to hold. I've since given some packs to loved ones who thought I was being overexuberant about the floss. They're converts now too.

The floss is 'stretchy', which means that when you begin flossing your teeth and pull the floss string out, it will flick the contents between your teeth (food) as a projectile. Other floss companies have floss strings that are firm and steady, Listerine on the other hand uses stretchable material, so by the time you're done flossing, your mirror will have food pieces thrown at it. I have to partially close my mouth and aim at the sink when using this floss ...such a hassle.
I ended up throwing the Listerine floss in the trash and ran back to my oral-b floss ...what a terrible experience, did no one notice this would happen during QA testing before mass producing this floss?

This packaging feels really cheap and the plastic is thin. The floss is very rubbery and stretchy, it doesn't feel like it cleans anything at all. It also doesn't have that waxed feeling like the previous kind they used to make.
I don't recommend buying this product. It's only slightly better than the ultra cheap free floss you get from your dentist. I would just say buy something else instead.
Honestly, it's very disappointing to buy something so bad, but that seems to be the trend these days with most products.
