1.0 out of 5 stars It's not durable
By Alejandra on April 21, 2017
When I received it was perfect, the light sensor was awesome and everything but within 4 months 2 keys have poped out and now is useless.

When I received it, it was awesome, the light sensor and the soft feeling...great. BUT within a couple of months a started feeling that the light started failing and little by little one key poped out, then another one. How is this possible for a keyboard of this price range?!

2.0 out of 5 stars The old K800 was better; this model has some poor design choices and some illumination problems.
Reviewed in Canada on January 24, 2019
[Update Feb 2021] Revising my rating to two stars. The keyboard still works but the illumination feature is now unusable due to the illumination cycling on off every few seconds, no matter the setting. It appears to be a faulty light sensor with no way to fix. I am now back to using my older (nearly a decade old) original K800. This is now a backup only. A truly disappointing purchase and unless Logitech have fixed the problems this is a hard KB to recommend.

* Four illumination levels, or illumination off.
* Auto sensor that turns illumination off to save battery life, with multiple ways to set this via included software
* Keystroke depression \ resistance is very nice (not soft or mushy)
* RF Wireless (not bluetooth) with good range. Comes with small, unobtrusive wireless dongle
* Does have configurable 'Logitech Options' software
* Overall good build quality. Best of the wireless keyboards I've tried
* Full size keyboard with right hand numpad

* New K800's have batteries that are sealed in, unlike the old K800 where you could swap out batteries if wanted.
* No ability to remap function keys onboard or with software.
* I preferred the old Set Point software to the new 'Logitech Options' software
* My keyboard doesn't always hold the settings I input into the Logitech Options software, requiring hard off \ on or reset.
* I'd like a longer auto - on setting like 30 minutes.

I have two Logitech K800 keyboards. I bought the first one in October of 2014, and the second one in December of 2018, both here on The first K800 I bought in 2014 is superior in every way.

The biggest disappointment comparing the old and new K800:

Opening the old K800’s battery cover revealed two regular AA batteries (Eneloop’s) that you could swap out if you wanted, instead of plugging the keyboard in to charge it. In that way it was 100% full-time wireless. Removing the battery cover on the new K8800 reveals that the battery is sealed inside and unremoveable.

First problem with this is that any keyboard requiring you to plug it in, even if only for charging, ceases to be a 100% full time wireless device. There is no substitute for the convenience of being able to just swap in fresh batteries if you want and you’re good to go, always wireless. The new one must be plugged in to be charged – no battery swapping available.

Second problem regarding the sealed battery compartment is that it reduces the lifespan of the keyboard. Even the best rechargeable’s have a lifetime recharge cycle. So now when the K800 reaches the end of the sealed batteries recharge life cycle the keyboard is a brick. My four year old K800 is 100% perfect, even though I’ve had to completely replace the AA Eneloops. There’s no way I’ll get 8 years out of the new K800 with no ability to replace the battery. This reminds me of the old ipod battery-gate. Is this planned obsolescence by Logitech?

The old K800 had a smooth luxurious membrane type finish that felt very premium to the touch. The new K800 is kind of a hard plastic and doesn't feel as luxurious. This is relative …. I’m not saying it feels ‘cheap’, but definitely ‘cheaper than’ it’s more luxurious predecessor. It's still overall a very solid feeling premium keyboard.

Another disappointment with the new K800 is the new Logitech Options software. I really liked the old Set Point software. It was effective. It worked, stayed out of the way in sys tray, but was also easily accessible there. The new Logitech Options software follows the trend of creating nicer looking, metro-ey type software the does look OK, but takes an extra step to get to, opens slower, and most frustrating … it doesn’t always hold the settings. Many times it doesn’t hold the illumination settings I input (setting: start illumination with typing & leave on for 10 minutes) and the illumination goes off when I remove my hands. Sometimes re-opening the software resets it, and sometimes it requires that I power off and back on the keyboard then reset the settings. It seems more temperamental and finicky.

The keystroke depression hasn’t changed at all on the new K800. It's still great. These are not mechanical switches and I actually like that. To me this feels like just the perfect amount of key resistance and it’s quiet to type on. I’ve typed for hours on this and it doesn’t feel fatiguing.

The keyboard has four illumination levels. I find either of the first two illumination levels are excellent, even for typing in a dark room. I also have poor eyesight and I find the illumination makes the keys easily visible. Level one or two illumination will also provide the greatest battery life.

You set illumination to come on in one of two ways: either when you touch the keyboard (hand detection), or when you start typing. There is no setting for always on. After activating through hand detection or typing, you have choices to turn illumination off after 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds, or 1, 5 or 10 minutes. I set mine to come on when typing and stay on for the full 10 minutes.

The battery life will of course depend on how much you use it and what illumination settings and level you choose, but expect anywhere from a week under very heavy use (a week of 14 - 16 hour days), to several weeks of battery life per charge.
