The Making of The Rings of Power

Galadriel

A legendary elven warrior and the Commander of the Northern Armies. Far from the wise, ethereal Lady of Lórien she will one day become, this much younger Galadriel is headstrong and relentless – and obsessed with hunting an elusive evil.

Galadriel

Elrond

When given the choice by higher powers to remain either a human or an elf, Elrond the half-elven chose immortality, whereas his brother Elros chose a mortal life and became the first King of Númenor. Greatness is in Elrond’s veins, but he has not yet totally found his place in the world. He must navigate the path between doing what is right for his kingdom and remaining loyal to those he holds most dear.

Elrond

Arondir

Arondir is a Silvan Elf, a branch of woodland elves who never left Middle-earth for Valinor. A soldier who grew up in the now-sunken lands of Beleriand, he has spent nearly a century keeping vigil over the men & women of the Southlands, whose ancestors sided with evil long ago. Now, the elves’ Age-long watch has nearly ended, but Arondir has grown fond of his charges – especially the healer-woman, Bronwyn.

Arondir

Lord Celebrimbor

Celebrimbor is a visionary artisan and Elf-lord of Eregion who has a plan to undertake a great work that will transform Middle-earth into a place whose beauty can rival even the grace of Valinor itself.

Lord Celebrimbor

High King Gil-galad

High King Gil-galad is a powerful, pragmatic, and wise Elven warrior and king. Ruling from the Elven capital in Lindon, he strives for a bright future for all elves – but harbors a great secret that threatens both his people, and all of Middle-earth.

High King Gil-galad

The Second Age

The Second Age began after the downfall of Morgoth, the original Dark Lord. The early part of the Second Age is a time of relative peace, allowing kingdoms of elves, dwarves, and men to grow and flourish as the wars of the First Age become a distant memory.

The First Age

The First Age was a conflict-laden time in the history of Middle-earth, during which its people endured centuries of warfare. At the end of the age, the great enemy, Morgoth, was finally overthrown, but Middle-earth was left forever changed, with much of its lands drowned and broken.

Valinor

Where the lands of Middle-earth end, their western shores give way to the Sundering Seas. Far across their waters lie the Undying Lands – also known as Valinor, the Far West, the final home of the High Elves, where they live out their immortal lives in blissful peace alongside the Valar, the god-like Guardians of the World.

The Two Trees of Valinor

Known as Telperion and Laurelin, the Two Trees of Valinor emit shining light to illuminate the Undying Lands in the First Age. The Trees were destroyed by Morgoth, who then fled to Middle-earth with the Silmarils, jewels that had been infused with the trees’ radiance.

Morgoth

The Great Foe of all good things in Middle-earth. Morgoth is the first Dark Power to plague the world in the First Age, causing devastation and creating many twisted and monstrous creatures. Though ultimately defeated, his influence of evil lives on into the Second Age and beyond.

Sauron

One of Morgoth’s top lieutenants, Sauron was a key perpetrator of the boundless suffering and death caused by the wars of the First Age. After his master was overthrown, Sauron disappeared. His fate remains unknown, but some believe he will still return – and there are those who even yearn for it.

Valar

The angelic and powerful Guardians of the World, god-like beings who watch over Middle-earth and Valinor. At the end of the First Age, they graced the men who fought alongside the elves against Morgoth with a divine gift: the island kingdom of Númenor.

The Silmarils

The Silmarils are three jewels wrought in the First Age by the greatest elven craftsman, Fëanor. Works of unparalleled beauty, these jewels are filled with the radiant light of the Two Trees of Valinor. But they were stolen by Morgoth, who coveted them for their beauty. After his defeat, two of the Silmarils were lost, and the third was set in the sky as a star.

The Stranger

An enigmatic figure of unknown origins who struggles to remember his own identity. He wields mysterious powers that may prove dangerous to those around him.

Adar

Adar is the name Second-Age orcs use for their leader. It is also an Elvish word meaning “Father” – though why the orcs call him this remains unknown to outsiders… along with the enigmatic figure’s origins and motivations.

Resonating

Resonating is the sacred process by which Dwarven women “sing” to the mountain, in order to determine where to dig — and where not to…

The Mystic

These three strange figures arrive in Rhovanion a short time after the arrival of the Stranger — searching for him, it is said, for purposes unknown….

Tolkien Fan Enjoys Show, Sees Room to Grow
Verified purchase
Context: I really enjoy all of Tolkiens's work and it's different versions, whether it's Peter Jackson trilogy, the Hobbit, the Children of Hurin, the Lord of the Rings books, or even an art book by Allen Lee.

Overall I really enjoyed watching the show. It draws me into this world that I love so much because it captures my imagination. I've grown up with it and in some ways this world that Tolkien created is like an old friend.

That being said, it's pretty clear that the writing still needs to improve, whether that be one note characters, plot holes, or just a general lack of focus, this takes away from the show's potential. I feel like going forward, the writers aught to focus more on the themes that Tolkien wrote about, the natural world vs industrialization, hope in dark places, healthy platonic relationships, the corruptibility of man and the dangers of power, among many others.

I hope Amazon puts more faith in the creative Tolkien fans working on this project. Trust the source material and instead of writing what you think we want to see and hear, be inspired the wisdom of an old tale and trust that those old myths will ring true today.

Next season should just be Galadriel waking up from a head injury back on dry land. The Wizards could have rescued her from the water as they left the undying lands to Middle Earth(by boat). She could say lines like "I witnessed a whole season pass and it was terrible, but I'm glad it was just a nightmare". After that you just retcon the whole first season and we move on like it never happened. Casting was fine, Sets were greatish, and its an interesting era to explore. The issues i have with the first season was just the massive changes to the cannon that does exist for this era. When you change to much about the cannon you end up with what seems like a bad fan fiction. Its not the writers fault, but whoever was calling the shots needs to rethink this adaptation. The last 2 episodes of the season were not great and ruined my experience. Up to that point it had a layer of mystery and some decent story telling. Lastly, can we give the elves back their hair lines. I get that it was an artistic approach to further separate them from humans, but I don't think it's a good look. It's a little extreme and distracting.

Too many liberties taken, too many plots
Verified purchase
I think "The Rings of Power: A New Series Inspired by the Works of J. R. R. Tolkien" would be a better and more accurate name for this series. I won't belabor the alterations to the story line and its chronology that plague the series (The Stranger). I won't belabor the frequently one-dimensional characterizations the writers have burdened their actors with (Galadriel and Celebrimbor—the first is too headstrong, the second too gullible, hardly anything like the way Tolkien wrote them. (The writers do much better with Bronwyn, Arondir, maybe Adar, all of whom are of course new characters invented for the show.) They knocked it out of the park, pretty much, with Halbrand, undeniably the most interesting and three-dimensional character of them all).

As a fantasy series, it works pretty well. I think there are too many separate plotlines going. The Harfoots, especially, was too slow and aimless and had too few payoffs. There are incredible effects and costumes, along with breathtaking set design. There are exciting action scenes (too many for my taste). There's not a lot of what I would call genuine interaction among the characters. (Again, notable exceptions are Arondir and Bronwyn.) In addition, some characters are introduced without much explanation and removed without much of a payoff, especially The Dweller and her entourage. But I don't particularly feel like it recaptures the richness of Tolkien's language and historical depth.

The takeaway I have from watching the first season is that the show doesn't really know what it wants to be yet. First seasons, though, are often the weakest, so I'm willing to watch the second season when it's complete.

A series that all ages can watch
Verified purchase
I liked that this is a series that all ages can watch. It tells a story of valor, companionship, loss, love and most importantly - the combat of evil with Goodness and belief in a higher power. I have been a fan of JRR Tolkien for many years and have read the LOTR plus the appendix. This series makes use of the appendix and the Silmarillion for a backdrop. It is not perfect - but it must be ok, since the family of JRR has given it their backing. The only negative is with some of the visuals - too many mega-statues! This being my only negative, I am looking forward to next season!

High production value and clever story weaving!

I know there are some diehards out there, and I feel that way about Star Wars media. Regardless of what you heard, this series has amazing production value, and they really thought out the stories very well. I loved this series because they stayed congruent with major plot lines in the Lord of the Rings books. Sure some timing might be over looked on when certain characters entered the timeline, but if you can get over some of these details, and watch the show for what its worth, which is an episodic adventure with multiple dependent plot lines, you actual get a well done series. The acting was great! I personally loved the performances of the Dwarf King and Son. The cinematography was great too. The special effects were top notch, clearly no expense was spared and I can really appreciate that. I gave it 5 stars because of 2 major questions that I need answered. 1. Was I excited to see the next episode? Yes, I didn't want to wait a week. 2. Did it bring me back to Middle Earth. Yes! It did bring me back to middle earth. I personally like genealogy, so to see this story unfold and realize the relationships between these characters and the ones from Lord of the Rings was very cool. This series was very entertaining to me. The story telling was really good and it gave me a deeper and more connected understanding to some key characters. Thank you Amazon for bringing this series into production!

5 star many great things, just hope it will take it up in dignity a little more

By the end of this season, I absolutely love this series and am very happy with it and can't wait to see all seasons. To me what I liked the most is them filling in so many historical details of how things happened from the later movies. The costumes and scenery are really beautiful and detailed as well, fantastically integrating natural and sci-fi features, and symbols, and that is another detail I always really love and appreciate. I absolutely loved the origin of the stranger and who he turns out to be, and the surprise about Halbrand. I really didn't expect it at all, and it is a really fantastic addition to the story for him and Galadriel to have personal interaction. I just really hope the series becomes even a bit more respectful and dignified. I really don't want to see Galadriel's form beneath her transparent sea outfit, or her smacking some random guy's bottom with her sword. Keeping the series as dignified and respectful to all people as possible, is really one of the things that made the movies so meaningful and deep. It's the positive examples of courage, bravery, honor, and integrity that really make these stories so powerful. When done right, these examples are very powerfully positive for society. I am always so grateful for such positive messages, in a world where many others are setting harmful examples. Thank you so much, can't wait to see more!

Hoping for a season 2!

I'm not very knowledgeable with the lore but I truly enjoyed most of the scene work as well as the acting! I really am looking forward for a season 2 and naturally I would kill just to have a walk on role for this series. The reason for the 4 stars was because I feel like they rushed some of the character development in the series. But all in all I enjoyed the easter eggs they left in there and I hope we see some side stories that go along with the current plotline.

I wasn't sure if I would like it or not, but it definitely grew on me. Galadriel was not likeable at first, but it seems that's part of her character arc. Her quote about not satisfying your thirst by drinking sea water really impressed me. I loved the friendship between Elrond and Durin. I would keep watching just for them. Visually, I think Rings of Power is better than the Hobbit trilogy, but not as good as the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
