I can't believe the prior owner didn't put a dimmer switch in the media room so I bought this switch and appropriate bulbs (i.e. not LED or CF). Lutron website has a wizard guide which I didn't end up using b/c it's so easy. Switch comes with caps to twist two wires together. Very easy to install.
The cover it took a bit to figure out how to take off. I used a screw driver to unclip one of the 4 clips and just worked my way across the plate. The twist caps easily and securely put wires together with wall socket wiring. The slider works smoothly and sets the right amount of light in the media room for movies. The switch is also marginally lighted in the off position which is not really enough light to illuminate the room but just to find the wall switch. Of course, I turned off the breaker panel for the room prior to installation.
The only thing I wasn't wild about was the fact that the faceplate is not screwed on. I suppose this gives it a cleaner look but I feel like I'm going to snap / break something when I go to pry it off. And once that happens it's essentially useless. I'll need to get another plate
The faint LED behind the switch is dim enough not to be distracting, but bright enough so you can find the switch in darkness.
The switch has a comfortable feel to it.
The screwless faceplate is really a two-piece design, like many of Lutron's products. A back plate screws to the switch box, while a sleek face plate snaps into place over it. It can seem a little trick to get on and off the first few times, but it's easy enough to get used to and looks great.
I highly recommend this for any dimming application. Potential buyers should note that this is the standard white glossy model, which is my favorite. However, there is also a matte "satin" finish available in a number of colors.
A few years ago when doing a kitchen and dining remodel all of the switches were replaced with ones in which the lights were turned on and off with a small push button and the lighting intensity was adjusted with a slender slide button. Easy to use, easy to tell at a glance what level the dimmer is at and architecturally attractive. A while later when an adjacent room was remodeled those switches were no longer available so we went with another design. And then recently we wanted to replace an on/off switch for the outdoor patio light with a dimmer. You guessed it, now the designs have changed again so we have 3 different types of dimmers within view of each other.
This one has its pros and cons, not in how good it works because it works fine, but in the advantages of having the on/off being a big paddle and the dimmer slider being a tiny button alongside. And the lesson learned is that maybe the fact that they don't all match each other isn't such a bad idea. Hopefully this review will help you choose the right switch for your intended use.
Example: the kitchen and dining lights are dimmed numerous times a day, making the prominent slider button an advantage. They are usually only turned on and off once per day, however, making the smaller power button an advantage.
The situation for the patio light is quite the opposite. Typically it is turned on every time someone walks outdoors and then turned off again when they re-enter the house. The light is almost always at the full-bright position. The only time the light is dimmed is when there is an outdoor party ... the lights are full bright while food is being served then dimmed low when people are sitting around the fire pit talking. Therefore a large on/off paddle with a small dimmer slider is the right choice for this location.
Lutron makes a well-built product and we have never had one fail so the answer to the question of build quality has been answered. It is built to last.
Kudos to Lutron for making this dimmer available in 5 décor colors and for including a matching wall plate.
If you are starting a remodel project the decision comes down to do you want all of your switches to match or do you want to choose them by functionality? Hope this helps.
