I have been buying Madhava coconut palm sugar for a while now as an alternative to sugar. I have bought this brand a few time. It is available in my grocery store. I received my last bag from Amazon recently. And when I drank coffee with it, I would get usually sleepy, everyday and would be sluggish for hours after. The only thing that has changed is the bag of coconut palm. Last night I bought 2 more bags of coconut palm one from Madhava an one from a competitor and taste them and compared the texture. I just as I suspected the first Madhava bag was fake and has another powdery brown finely ground substance on it, like brown sugar. Sending it to a lab to be tested. Not cool I am going to keep you updated. In pic one lump definitely has a different texture than the other. And it doesn’t have the caramel taste of palm sugar. It taste more like brown sugar.

Great surprise! This stuff tastes EXACTLY like delicious brown sugar. No funky aftertaste or oddness. Just awesome yum. Due to a chronic illness, I had to go sugar free and grain free. So birch xylitol, sweetleaf stevia, monk fruit sweetener, became my BEST FRIENDS. I was fearful coconut sugar would be sugar and cause problems. But it is safe for me! Love this stuff!

I've been searching for a calorie-free, carb-free sweetener specifically for my morning coffee. Stevia was not a winner for me, as its bitter aftertaste combined with the natural bitterness of coffee was unpalatable. (Although I do like a few drops of Whole Foods French Vanilla liquid stevia added into a coffee drink - I think the vanilla flavoring masks the bitterness to some extent.) I also tried Swerve, which is erythritol + oligosaccharides. The flavor was ok if I didn't put too much in, but GI side effects were not pleasant.

Enter Madhava's Simpla. I had read about monk fruit and allulose and was intrigued by the reviews of this product. And it is a winner!

The following points make Madhava's sweetener my favorite thus far:

- Clean taste, very much like sugar
- NO aftertaste, which is hard to come by with sugar-free sweeteners
- The bag says measures 1:1 for sugar. I would say that sounds right based on the amount I'm putting in my coffee, but I haven't tried baking with it yet, so I don't know for sure. I've read other reviews saying it doesn't seem as sweet as sugar.
- NO GI effects such as gas, bloating, etc.

The only downside is the price, but all of the sugar alternatives I've found are somewhat pricey. I try to use these as little as possible anyway, considering they are processed.

I put one packet of this coconut sugar in my morning tea – and initially liked the taste, which does seem similar to brown sugar. But EWW – it leaves a VERY strong, metallic aftertaste that stays in your mouth all day. Even scrubbing my tongue with toothpaste couldn't get rid of it. Also left my mouth strangely dry and tacky. For various health reasons I wanted to love this as an alternative to regular sugar in my tea, but it was altogether a most unpleasant experience.

I love flavorful, quality sugar for making my own homemade coffee cream and for occasional baking. This is organic, tasty, and I can feel good knowing it’s ethically sourced. In my case, it was shipped with several other items and either the bag (attractive though it is) split open just from being jostled or was cut in the packaging process, so more than half had spilled out all over the other items in the Amazon box. I don’t know if that was a flaw of the packaging or if it had gotten nicked by a box cutter during packing (I had suspected the latter but since saw other reviewers had the same experience, so not sure where the responsibility lies). A big mess and more than half had to be thrown out (we had a lot going on, so I didn’t contact the seller), but I think I’ll purchase again and ask the seller to ensure its safe arrival if it’s within their ability to do so.

For me, sugar isn’t just sugar. The more I learn about certain products in particular, the more it matters to me that they’re made in a way that considers the health and well-being of the laborers (and the land) involved. ...And good coconut sugar, maple, etc. adds depth of flavor, not just sweetness... something this foodie girl with a sweet tooth really craves (love the beautiful, rich brown color, too).

I’ll update my review if the next arrives intact.

No sugar, usable one-for-one in recipes

When I tried to find a sugar substitute to use in baking that could be used one for one in the same amount as the sugar in recipes, mostly what I found was either things that were billed as sugar substitutes but actually contained some portion of real sugar or else were liquid and wouldn't work in recipes where a dry ingredient was called for and adding moisture would throw off the balance so the consistency would be wrong for baking. This product is the only one I've found that uses the same amount in recipes as normal sugar but is made from "the sap of the flower bud stem of the coconut palm" (quoted from their website). It contains no actual cane sugar, so is suitable for diabetics. It has a slightly toasted flavor if you eat it straight, not unpleasant but I wondered if it was strong enough to be detectable in baked goods. I make a LOT of banana bread—and I have to say that using this in place of the brown sugar I usually put in my banana bread makes absolutely no difference to the flavor. It may vaguely taste a little less sweet, but it's every bit as satisfying as if I'd used sugar. Glad to have found this!
