The two things that impressed me about it were: 1. The value. At just over $13 for 32 ounces, this is a great price. 2. Overall quality. This is a big bottle of extract. It came in a padded envelope with no damage to the bottle. Since it wasn't boxed and is just the plastic bottle I could see how there might be mishaps from shipping, but this wasn't my experience. The bottle itself has a flip top with a smallish hole for pouring controlled amounts (think salad dressing bottle tops), but the entire lid could be unscrewed as well for a faster pour if you prefer.
One last thing: this imitation vanilla is perfect to make home made cream soda! Just add one and a half teaspoons with your favorite liquid sweetener (I use liquid stevia) to a 16 oz bottle/glass of ice cold sparkling water and you've got a fantastic zero calorie cream soda. :)
It also doesn't hurt that this product is currently $7.60 ($0.48/fl oz), whereas the same sized bottle of McCormick Culinary Pure Vanilla Extract is $37.99 ($2.37/fl oz). That makes the "real" stuff five times as expensive as imitation vanilla.
Before I started ordering this 32 ounce bottle of imitation vanilla, I was going through a lot of the small bottles from the grocery store. This large bottle has lasted me a long time (comparatively) and I'm just now getting ready to start on my second bottle from Amazon.
Bought this to avoid alcohol content, but it was probably not worth it.
The only part of vanilla flavor it has is the dry bitterness that is similar to the aftertaste that makes cherry flavored medicine unpleasant. Basically only the gross parts of vanilla.
It also does not have any perceptible fragrance, except when you take a large amount and place it directly next to your nose, which doesn't really smell like vanilla.
It might be useful if you want to deliberately add that dry bitter flavor and aftertaste, which I'm sure a pro cook would probably know what to do with.
As far as being vanilla flavoring: this product seems to me to be like selling bitter flavoring as sake (imitation) flavored.
