From the manufacturer
Enjoy the freedom and convenience of wireless technology. Confidently roam up to 15 feet away from your PC while maintaining a strong wireless connection. Setting up the keyboard and mouse is simple—just insert the batteries, plug in the tiny transceiver, and start typing.
Plug the wireless receiver into your computer’s USB port when you’re ready to work. Then snap it into the bottom of your mouse when you travel, and the mouse will automatically turn off.
Includes the Wireless Mouse 1000
The Wireless Mouse 1000 is designed for comfort in either hand and uses Microsoft optical technology to provide precise optical tracking and highly responsive cursor control. Take the mouse separately to use with a laptop while traveling—the tiny transceiver conveniently snaps into the bottom of the mouse when it’s time to pack up and go.
This keyboard features Advanced Encryption Standard (AES*) technology, which is designed to help protect your information by encrypting your keystrokes. Each keyboard is permanently paired with its receiver at the factory—no key information is ever shared over the air.

Two points to remember:
The keyboard is coded at the factory to the specific mouse that's in the box. Great for easy setup and security, but IF YOU LOSE THERE MOUSE THE KEYBOARD IS USELESS. There is no realistic way around this.
Second- the Escape key is a tiny hard to find thing and will mock you as you search for it in your angriest of moments. Fear not, the mouse still works fine after you put the keyboard on the garbage disposal. (but the keyboard is not replaceable, soooo you would do well to see if someone only needs a mouse and start from scratch after giving the mouse to someone in need)

I could list all of the reasons like a sleep mode you can turn off, laggy response with less than a meter range, multiple key strokes after hitting one key and keys that randomly type other characters, but the clincher for me in the first week of use was this.
While typing in a report at what would for other keyboards be considered a normal speed, the feet on this keyboard collapsed. As odd as that was, the resulting effect was much more disconcerting.
No less that 15 keys ejected from the keyboard when the feet collapsed. Total POS. Avoid.
The price was great and the AES was a big plus, as I prefer using dedicated wireless devices rather than the discoverable types that use bluetooth. It looks like I'll end up buying into a product setup that I'd rather not use, when there are so many basic flaws that make this a backup to something new. This combo ends up being a $5 per month rental.
