Mostly I like this series. Sometimes Monk's idiosyncrasies are a little drawn out to the point of irritation and slowing down the storyline. It's over-played. It also took an adjustment when they switched his caretaker around the 4th season (I think). The first was fun to watch and a tough girl-with-a-heart-of-gold compliment to his completely dysfunctional personality; a much, much better fit for the show in my opinion. I did adapt to the replacement, who was so lackluster coming on abruptly before the season even finished. She never quite filled the shoes for me but gradually became adequate. The story lines are good and as long as the directing didn't have Monk overplaying his OCD, I enjoyed the plot. I somehow felt throughout that they were trying to recreate a show based on the format of Columbo----especially his earlier seasons, but never quite hit on the magnetism or intelligence of that series. Nevertheless, it wasn't a "waste" of time for me. Though I needed a break from the series, I may pick it up again.
