So, I get the magic black box. Setup is a breeze. It's up and working with Ooma phone number. The service defaults to the premier service, which will charge you card after 30 days and this is immediately disabled. I only want a phone.
Anyways, I go ahead pony up the $35 for a number transfer of my home phone number to the Ooma. Big mistake.
The entire affair was Ooma blaming the customer (me) that the PIN was wrong. Eventually they figured out it wasn't. Then they blamed the previous provider, which it may have been, but that's not my problem. In fact, the purpose of being forced to give them $35 is so they take care of the number transfer - not me.
The worst part of the entire affair was the non-stop emails from "customer service". These emails were worded in such a way that essentially stated that if I don't reply to them within a short time period, the would cancel the port.
After replying to each and every message, they caught me gone for the weekend with a 24 hr. "answer the email or we keep your money". Well, they kept the money and cancelled the port.
In the end, the concept is there. The equipment was problem free and seemed to work well for the number that was assigned. The problem is customer support. They were beyond worthless and it occurs to me that if I went through this to do a simple number transfer, what would happen if I had a problem with the service or the device?!
The final piece of information you need to know: The FCC was contacted about their number porting practices so that they would call me to figure out what went wrong and maybe get me my money back. Nope. Weeks have passed, not an email, not a call. I find it funny because they sure didn't have a problem sending out a ton of email to dump the work and keep my money.
I ended up having to return this nice device (refurbished is fine) thanks to the worst customer service I have experienced in the last 10 years. Think about that. Over an entire decade, the worst... by far.
No thank you. I'll keep my money and personal time. What a nightmare...
I paid $59.99 for the refurbished model, and it looks like that is still the price. At the time, that was a $40 savings over a new model, but it looks like new models have dropped in price by twenty dollars, while these refurbished models have remained at the same price.
Activation of the Telo was easy and was accomplished all online. I also ported my old phone number, which cost a total of $43.22. I have just the basic plan, so my monthly bill started at $5.03/month, but I see it has now gone up to $5.35/month.
I have had no issues with the quality of calls with Ooma.
BTW, I am in the twin cities area in Minnesota, USA.
