Chicken Care FAQs
Can I keep just one chicken?
Chickens are social animals and need each other’s company. They will pine, and probably stop laying, if left alone. Two should be looked on as the absolute minimum, and a hen left as a singleton after the deaths of other birds should be given companions as quickly as possible.
What should I think about before buying chicken?
Before choosing, you need to decide why you are planning to keep chickens. It could be for eggs, meat, a child’s pet, a show bird, some mobile, feathered garden decorations, or a combination of these things. Many chicken keepers go for an all-rounder breed such as the Rhode Island Red and Barred Plymouth Rock.

Do chickens need bringing indoors at night?
As long as the coop is always open, you will not have to worry about rounding them up like straying sheep. Hens “come home to roost” when it starts to get dark, and all you have to do is close the door behind the last one. Any hen left out in the dark for any reason will be helpless, and can easily be lifted up and brought back to safety.
Chicken Toys
Chickens like to play. Just as a dog enjoys a stick or a cat has fun with a ball of wool, hens enjoy ‘games’ involving perching and pecking. A chicken toy is something the birds can interact with, to stimulate and satisfy their natural instincts and behaviors. The common toys are like, chicken swings as they like to get up high for a good lookout spot and peck toys for them to see reservoir of food.

The structure was simple to put together. Instructions were clear, all hardware was included, everything was pre drilled, and everything fit where it should. It took me probably 30 minutes to put together by myself.
To make this more weather proof for Ohio winters, I did also caulk around the seams, and painted the whole structure. This will be stored on a covered porch- but again, Ohio winters... This will help ensure it is well protected and didn’t take much time- plus then I could customize the colors.
To make this more suited for cats, the following modifications were also done:
Removed the door with the side hinge, and reduce the opening by adding trim pieces (to help prevent larger critters from getting in); added a dividing wall inside with another cutout (plywood); insulated all sides, top, bottom; added outdoor heating mats; added a side access door since they usually like an escape route.
The end result looks nice and is functional. Whether you use this as a chicken coop or something else, I’d still recommend at least caulking the seams to help prevent water from getting in.
I’ve had the cat house outside for 2 days and the outdoor cats have already been using it constantly. I feel confident that with the extra weatherproofing I did upfront, this should last for several seasons. It saved me a lot of time!

We did a few things to increase its longevity and fuction:
1. Painted with 7 year solid stain. The strain that came on it was VERY light and seeing a how the wood isn't cedar, better protection will really increase its useful life. Made sure to paint bottom and over hardware
2. Added vinyl floor to make clean outs much easier
3. Added vents (really needs these, esp for ducks)
4. Added a bit of trim to front and mounted 2 12in piano hidges to roof. With upgraded screws (stainless).
5. Upgraded latches to ones that would work with carabiners (critters cant open and easy to use). Missed 1 will have to bit store again :)
6. Added bolts and wood to hold roof up for clean outs
7. Added a bit of wood to roof to stiffen it up
8. Added bit of wood to hang heat lamp from for chicks and later on timed lamp to increase laying
9. Set it on cement blocks to reduce rot/water comtact on feet (after painting them good).
Using it for chicks now but will eventually be 5 hen duck house. Need to level it and build a ramp extension.

Utilisé comme maisonnette extérieur pour mes 3 lapins dans un enclos.
Entièrement en bois, assez mince, parfait pour l'été, mais peut-etre envisager une isolation pour l'hiver selon votre région.
