5.0 out of 5 starsWorks perfectly as a Zigbee range extender for Hue Smart Bridge
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020
I'm puzzled Amazon is asking me to rate features "Brightness" and "Motion Detection" on this smart plug. This had me running back to the documentation to see if it had capabilities I didn't know about. No such luck. It's simply an error on Amazon's part.

Most of my smart lighting is Lutron Caseta, but I do have a handful of Hue light strips scattered about. The outdoor light strip was outside the range of our Hue Smart Bridge and was unresponsive to HomeKit, Alexa and the Hue app. A temporary solution was a table lamp with a Hue smart bulb placed in the dining room to act as a Zigbee network range extender, halfway between the Smart Bridge and the unresponsive light strip. That worked perfectly, but there was no useful place to keep the lamp. There has been speculation in the reviews that the Hue Smart Plug would act as a Zigbee range extender and I can confirm it does exactly that. The unwanted lamp has been retired and the outside lightstrip is now 100% reliable.

If you've got any hue bulbs in your home at the extreme edge of the Hue Smart Bridge's range, the Hue Smart Plug can be used as a range extender.

2.0 out of 5 starsUnreliable with not much support
Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2020
I have two Philips hue bridge/hubs (because one would not cover the whole house) and about 14 bulbs/switches and 3 dimmer switches. I use Homekit to operate the system as the Philips app requires you to switch hubs to use the lights on each hub/bridge and Amazon's Alexa only supports one hub/bridge.

I have purchased 4 of these Smart Plugs and 1 did not work. For the ones that work, it is simply enough to configure and setup, but for the one that does not work, it remains a mystery how to debug the device since there is no support. They say plug it and the light turns green, then go to the app and add it. But what happens when it turns green and then starts flashing red? I could find nothing on the Philips site and the a search of the internet revealed nothing. I have no idea what the flashing red light means. I have plugged it into sockets where there is a working Smart Plug and it still does not work. Wi FI signal is not an issue. Maybe some one here knows?

I have also noticed that these are very difficult to find and that prices on Amazon are higher than Philip's web site. Is there something we do not know causing a problem here. Bottom line is that I do not trust this plug. 25% failure, expensive (higher than msrp on Amazon) and little to no support.

Not recommended. Find another solution for those fittings that cannot take a Philips Hue lamp or find another smart home solution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to install smart plug!
Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2020
Size: 1 PackVerified Purchase
I'm heavily invested in Hue at my house. While the market is FULL of Wi-Fi plugs, it often means yet another app to install on your phone, etc. Also, many Wi-Fi plugs have issues with 5ghz bands. Which means your 2.4ghz wireless has more devices attached, which isn't desired. This uses the Hue hub, with it's own ZigBee network. Which means, no impact to your wireless network, only need your Hue app, and it just works.

While some other 3rd party ZigBee plugs do work with Hue (I tried them), often Alexa doesn't see those plugs quite right. Requiring some fiddling to make it work. Hue plug + Hue bridge + Alexa = PERFECT. Thus spending a bit more on a plug becomes a good idea. It just works, keeps family happy as you don't hear "Alexa isn't turning on the coffee maker!". Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works for appliances on a 5GHz WiFi network.
Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2020

Works perfectly in Hue systems. Works fine for appliances, as long as the maximum wattage is not exceeded. However, it is expensive for a smart plug. Since my WiFi is a 5GHz, this is the only compatible appliance smart plug that I have found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great despite indicating 120V only
Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2020
Size: 1 PackVerified Purchase
I had mistakenly bought this to use here in the Philippines where 220v is the norm. Item had stated 120V. I was ready to return it, but to ship it back to the US was impractical and costly. I had checked with support if it would work here in the Philippines using 220v, they said no. However I did some research that showed conflicting comments. My research had said Philips items are usually auto volt nowadays, just marked a certain way based on where it is sold. The short of it, I thought of risking frying one plug to see if it would work at 220V. It did. My experiment paid off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Dim - Overpriced
Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2021
Size: 1 PackVerified Purchase
The media could not be loaded.
For what this item is, it's greatly overpriced. It is a straightforward on/off smart plug. In that regard, it works fine but other companies offer the same thing for much less money.

The issue is that it is only an on/off plug. When used on a lamp in a room linked together with other Hue bulbs and the Hue remote, the experience is noticeably different. I already have two lamps with Hue bulbs in the room and when you turn them on/off with the remote, they fade on/off together nicely. I got this plug because I have a 3-bulb standing light I am adding to that room and it made more sense to control the entire lamp instead of getting 3 smart bulbs. However, this plug does not provide the same experience. There is no fading on/off and there is no ability to dim the bulbs. It's all or nothing. For a smart plug/outlet, that makes sense. You wouldn't want to give half power to an electronic device like a radio, a coffee machine, etc. However, Hue is specifically branded to be a "smart lighting" line of products. Yes, there are non-dimmable lights on the market, but Hue should be consistent in their experience from one Hue product to the next so they compliment each other, or at least allow the ability to disable it if needed. Another major brand competitor sells a smart plug specifically for lighting that allow for dimming of lamps plugged into it and gives a nice smooth fade in/out, consistent with their switches and pretty much the same as the Hue bulbs do. When that brand's devices are paired together, all linked lighting devices (lamps, switched lighting fixtures) all transition smoothly together.

As a smart on/off plug itself, it works fine. Connected easily to the Hue app and worked with Google Home voice commands. It makes an audible relay click when you turn it on and off. That is consistent with other equivalent on/off plugs that I own, but added a bit more annoyance when in the same room with the nicely fading (and silent) Hue bulbs. In the attached video, you hear the clicking of the remote, but if you listen, you can hear the smart plug clicking in the background.

As for the Hue product line, I'm otherwise very satisfied. I have a mix of 4 different brands of smart switches/bulbs in my home which were driven by notably different needs in various locations (4-way no-neutral wiring, no-neutral switch without dimming, low priority spots that justified the cheapest option). I am using Hue specifically in a room where I have no switched lighting, so adding the Hue remote paired with the bulbs spread around the room worked out great for me. Controlling the various brands through a central app (i.e. Google Home) has made the differing brands seamless to manage.

Ultimately, I got 3 more Hue bulbs for the lamp instead and will be returning this plug. In the very long term it will be less cost efficient, but feels much more seemless.

5.0 out of 5 stars On mains there is momentary lag
Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020
Size: 1 PackVerified Purchase
We put most of our kitchen LEDs on two of these, nowhere near the amp limit of the smart outlets. We left one LED bar directly plugged into the mains, because we have some guests that freak out when "Alexa" lights are off but still on with the switch. They panic if they have to turn a lightswitch off and back on again, as though it's a sign of an approaching societal collapse. Anyway, this leaves a bit of light in the kitchen even if Alexa has turned the others off. The funny thing is, from full lightswitch off to lightswitch on, the light bar that's directly plugged into the mains comes on a noticeable fraction of a second sooner than the bulk of them that are connected to the smart outlets. It creates an effect not unlike the balast-driven fluorescent bulbs we replaced, a seeming flicker as dim light comes on before the full lumens fill the kitchen. It makes visual sense, actually. Just be aware that there is lag when you switch them externally.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great, just few nits!

Works great with Apple Homekit just wished Philips would identify plug usage for other than light applications

Rock solid. Does not use WIFI bandwidth. 1800 watts rated. Philips only recommends plug usage for lights. If your are not using the plug for a light, there are a few nits. Philips when integrating plug in Google home, Google home identifies plug as a light. I have Samsung SmartThings also. It appropriately identifies as plug in Google Home integration so I port Samsung Smartthings Hue identification of the plug. Amazon Alexa identifies correctly. Apple Homekit will allow you to identify as a fan, plug or light, but if you choose fan. Hue will say it's a Apple Homekit mis-match in the Hue app. If you correct in Hue app, it will change the Apple Homekit settings.

I'm a Lutron and Hue fan for Apple Homekit.

4.0 out of 5 stars LIGHTS OWN LIGHTS OFF (wax on wax off get it LOL)
Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2021
Size: 1 PackVerified Purchase
Ok, I had several lamp stands that were on timers that I found were not part of my automation using the smart switch app used to control my lights so that I don't have to go through the house turning off lights. At first I thought that the price was a little steep. However, the switches are well worth the price when you get them and set them up so that you don't have to walk into a dark house. The other thing is if you hear a bump in the night you can turn on every light in the house with the swipe of one finger. Not only that but you can adjust the lights to come on and off using sunset and sunrise so you don't have to adjust them for spring and fall seasons (daylight saving time). Over all they seem to be solidly made and I have been thinking about getting wall switches replacements in the future. This would eliminate having to keep buying the expensive light bulbs that works with the app going forward depending on the costs. Will update in the future should I find a problem with this item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish I could dim with the plug
Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2020

I wish I could use the dimming feature with this plug, as the Philips bulb also has the ability to dim. But love the fact that I could have a 100 watt LED bulb and use the Philips Smart Switch, and have another lamp connected to the switch that is a Smart Philips LED bulb that is a 60 watt max. I wish the Philips Smart Natural light bulbs came in 100 watt but, this worked to make a 100 watt smart, just wish I could use the dimming feature.
