Problem Child

5.41 h 21 min1990X-RayPG
Good-natured Ben Healy (Ritter) and his social-climbing wife Flo (Yasbeck) adopt seven-year-old Junior (Michael Oliver) to help brighten their lives. But Junior soon turns an ordinary camping trip, an innocent birthday party and even a little league baseball game into full-scale comic nightmares. Thinking all his new son needs is some loving attention, Ben puts up with Junior's mishaps but only to a point. Just as he's ready to take drastic action, Ben realizes that beneath the little monster lurks an angel craving affection in this satire on the trials of modern-day family life.

Something That No Parent Has Ever Done For Him Before. We're Gonna Love Him!"
Verified purchase
This is the most hilarious comedy film I've ever seen. Greatest performances and role by John Ritter (R.I.P.), Amy Yasbeck, Jack Warden (R.I.P.), Gilbert Gottfried, Michael Richards & Michael Oliver. I've seen this before like long time ago but when I watch it again it just gets better. This movie shows that if you abuse a child it gets the same results back to you. Like John Ritter said "People are just looking for the easy way out. Like their problems will just go away". Good point. Morals are very important to a story like this. Enough though it's funny what junior does right back them. Love your child no matter what. I recommend it to parents to learn about this film.

The Thing about Problem Child
Verified purchase
I once heard that Problem Child was once called one of the worst comedies of all time. I have but six words on that note: “It has John Ritter in it” Yes, the plot is absurd: a child that is so bad that nobody wants him until this happy go lucky guy takes the leap and grows quite fond of Junior despite a series of horrendous, although humorous incidents like the baseball game and camping with that jerk Roy. And don’t get me started on the bow tie killer, played reasonably well by Michael Richards.

But on another level it has this quirky perverse, charm as it really makes me laugh for so many of the wrong reasons. I would suggest that its actually a father-son bonding story complete with destruction on a softer scale then a film intended for adult audiences. It’s really a harmless way to spend ninety minutes and if you have kind of an off-beat sense of humor, then you might really get into this one.

Not an Academy Award Nominee...
Verified purchase
Obviously we aren't talking about an academy award nominee here lol, but in the name of pure nostalgia as someone who grew up watching Problem Child 1 and 2 I feel obligated to give it 5 stars.... but I can settle with 4. Its a classic kids movie with potty humor and not so PG kids humor, of course this movie was released at a time when the world wasn't so PC crazed so liberties are taken with these movies. Problem Child really showcases John Ritter's appeal, even in a film like this he is a great actor and is such a likable guy. The overall chemistry of the cast really shines through too. Again, this is not an academy award quality film here people, but I recommend this movie to anybody who has an open mind and can enjoy the occasional "stupid funny movie" every now and again.

A Must have classic!
Verified purchase
Junior is an orphan who gets adopted by John Ritter and it's hilarious antics from start to finish! This movie definitely hit the spot before the Adam Sandler movies type of humor was popular. It definitely has that late 80's early 90's feel but in that fun way we all remember it by. And the sequel on here even though it was panned by critics at the time, was even better than the first in my opinion. The same actors come back even Amy Yashback! This is a classic must have collection! But keep out of reach of kids under 13 they may get ideas. ;)

Not great comedy, preposterous, actually, but so what?
Verified purchase
I have watched both 1 and 2 several times, recently with my grandchildren, mostly hoping they will learn not to do what Junior does. (Well, actually, because one of my grandchildren is scandalized and that, too, is funny.) I never cared for John Ritter. The lines are great. The only drawback is that there was something wrong with the DVD for the first movie. It was too much of a hassle to bother to return it, so I kept it even with the multiple blackout spots.

I watched this when I was younger, and I thought it was hilarious. I wanted my son to see it too, but Christ Almighty, I forgot how much this kid curses! LOL!!! Good entertaining bratty kid film, but I suggest waiting until they're a little older. It might give them some ideas....
