Impressive, how can this movie not be in wide release?
Verified purchase
I found this movie extremely engaging, with an excellent story. Not having read the book, nor being a fan of Mel Gibson I rented on Prime just to see the performances. However, the movie far exceeded my expectations, and not just for the performances. To me it gets an A+ in story, acting, score and most of all, character development.

I could not understand how this movie was not in wide release in theaters and then found out the story behind the disagreements between the studio, the director and Mr. Gibson. If I'm not mistaken the director even used a pseudonym PB Shemran so he would not be attached to the project. However, I found this to be an excellent movie, engaging throughout.
Watch it without hesitation, I don't believe you will regret it.

Building a map for meaning
The Professor and the Madman. It has been a very long time since a movie has resonated with me. I have liked and enjoyed many movies over time, but this one..... very well done.

This movie wasn't billed as a "christian" movie, but it is by demonstrating many core beliefs that we hold in a very real and harsh way. It is not Passion of the Christ, but a more real and applicable story for the present day believer. Where Passion of the Christ gave us a foundation for hope. The Professor and the Madman shows us how expressing faith through what we do is a powerful force for good. It also asks a very powerful heart-wrenching question "Can a bad man be redeemed?" The powerful effects of love and forgiveness are shown in how they can help defeat the severe darkness of mental illness.

It is about the people writing the Oxford English Dictionary. I now own the 2nd Edition, all 20 volumes, and this movie is the reason.

I'm not happy that it wasn't widely released in theaters. It should've been billed as the biggest christian picture since the Passion of the Christ.

Great movie

Unsure as to why this movie was given a 1.5/4 rating from critic Roger Ebert (Nick Allen) compared to a 7.4/10 from IMDb. We enjoyed watching The Professor and the Madman. If you're interested in historical dramas then you'll like this movie.

The Amazing true story of American, Doctor William Minor, while housed in a lunatic asylum was a key source in bringing about the first Oxford English Dictionary
Sean Penn's gut-wrenching performance is horrifyingly accurate, you cannot help but be moved by him!

Top acting

This is an outstanding movie, the story is a good one. The reason this is an outstanding movie is the quality of the actors. I have never been an Sean Penn fan, Sean's performance in this movie is beyond excellent; so, my view changed. Gibson is always good, hence, in this movie far overshadowed by Penn. I believe this is a must see motion picture.

It is a bitter sweet movie with a good ending, great story with lots of forgiveness and with love. Will watch it again. It' a great example how people with mental illness still can contribute greatly to society.
