Is Your Salt Real?

There is a vast difference in the quality of salts on the market today. A quick glance at the ingredients label on most salts might surprise you! Many salts contain anti-caking agents and even dextrose (sugar). Others have been heat processed and stripped of their natural trace minerals. Real Salt brand sea salt on the other hand, is unrefined and full of natural minerals and flavor – the way salt was meant to be savored.

Where does Real Salt come from?

According to geologists, the Redmond salt deposit is the remnant of an ancient inland sea, probably part of what they call the Sundance Sea, which places the deposit within the Jurassic Period. Over time, the salt that settled at the bottom of the sea was trapped within the earth and then pushed up near the surface close to the town of Redmond, Utah.

The deposit occurs with over 60+ natural trace minerals which gives the salt its unique color, unique flavor, and numerous health benefits.  Because this deposit comes from an ancient sea bed, nature created the salt long before the earth experienced anthropogenic pollution and contaminants that are troubling our oceans today.

The Redmond salt deposit begins about 30 feet below the surface, covered by a layer of bentonite clay, which has protected it from erosion and from the possibility of modern contamination.

Is Your Salt Real?

About Us:

Real Salt vs. Himalayan and Celtic

We’re not trying to throw other companies under the bus and we don’t believe they’re trying to be dishonest; they simply might not know how to read their own analyses or we may have different approaches to interpreting them for the purposes of marketing.

Regardless of marketing spin, Real Salt is a complete natural sea salt. It is unrefined with nothing added and nothing removed, containing all of the minerals that nature put in place—all 60 or 84 of them, depending on who you ask.

Why we do what we do…

At Redmond, we’re passionate about wellness and believe nature has it right with products and people. Real products are rarely the idealized image of perfection that many have been led to believe. As with products, so with people. We believe people have a certain beauty born not of idealized image, but of natural uniqueness. We embrace real, and believe it to be the essence of life and the source of wellness of mind and body. This belief was the foundation upon which we’ve built the Redmond family of brands, including Real Salt, Earthpaste, and Redmond Clay.

About Redmond

By most standards, Redmond is a very different organization. In today’s business world, many companies exist around the idea that profit is the sole reason for existence, and that employees are a means to that end. By contrast, Redmond’s philosophy is that profit is the means, but that the end goal is elevating the human experience for both customers and employees. This is evident in Redmond’s business practices, its commitment to improving the community, and its promise to provide continual growth opportunities for its employees.

2.0 out of 5 stars I verified the "sand" complaint....
By Nats on April 21, 2018
Gave this a try without paying much attention to the complaints of it containing undissolved solids (sand??).
First used it on some eggs and noticed a bit of grit, didnt think much of it at the time, but the more I used it, the
more I was annoyed by it.
So, I did an experiment.
I dissolved one level teaspoon of this stuff in warm water and shook it a few minutes, then let it sit a while, and
shake again. Then, I filtered the solution through laboratory filter paper and let that dry.
I removed the "sand" with a tiny spatula and weighed it.
As you can see in the pics, I got 50 micrograms (0.05 grams) of "sand" from only one random teaspoon of salt.
I am no dentist, but I would be willing to bet this is NOT a good thing to eat.
Use your best judgement.

UPDATE 04/23/2018: After reading the article; "Wait, is that sand in my Real Salt?" I repeated the above experiment
because they claim the product does in fact contain 0.1% silica, and that it is 'bio-available' and "the body can absorb
and use them".
I used the serving size of 1.4gr this time. I collected 0.021gr (1.5% silica to salt) of silica sand, put it in a beaker with 5ml of 1N HCL
and 0.4gr of alpha amylase. Then placed it on a hotplate at 200F to mimic human digestion.
After about 2 hours, the silica had completely dissolved, which would indicate it is indeed bio-available and doesnt
just pass through the gut.
I also talked to my dentist assistant and she said that small amount will not harm your teeth, in fact, it would help clean
them.
So, while I still do not like having sand in my mouth, I am satisfied it is not only harmless, but the claims Real Salt
makes seems to be valid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for sand-lovers. Are the positive reviews real???
By Sew much fun on August 1, 2018
I do not understand how this product has such high reviews.... I guess if you enjoy chewing on sand, this is the salt/sand mix for you!!! I've included a photo of all the undissolved sand small rocks that sink to the bottom of the pot when I stirred in about a 1/4 cup of this "salt". To be perfectly frank I doubt the integrity of many of these reviews... starting to think many of them were purchased/false.

1.0 out of 5 stars It is sand or red rock grit in Redmond's salt
By A. V. A on October 2, 2018
Just prepared a marinade for freshly caught Atlantic Salmon fillets:
1. 1 Liter of purified hot water
2. 2 Tbps of pure white sugar
3. 5 Tbps of salt (2 Tbps of Redmond's and 3 of pure Iodized table salt)
4. Black and Allspice peppercorns
Well take a look at the pics - the cloudy pic is a few minutes after all of the ingredients were added to hot water and the second (clear) picture is twenty minutes after. Notice the haze and the sediment on the bottom? If the spoon touches the sediment it produces that unmistakable sand scraping sound. How would that taste on my amazing Salmon fillets? Honestly Redmond I love organic, but eating red rock silica is not a palatable menu option in my family. Is this what actually gives your salt its pinkish (Hawaiian salt) type of look? If it is, than it's just a sham. You really ought to disclose this clearly on your packaging and product description.
