We're passionate foodies and darn good cooks, so naturally Ritual started in our kitchens. Simple enough, right? Yeah, not so much. It took more than a year and hundreds of iterations to perfect our recipes. We learned how to blend jambu and prickly ash, how to reduce the oil in juniper and heighten the perfume of pine. We taste-tested vanilla from Madagascar against vanilla from China. We sought guidance from master chefs and held tasting sessions for the world’s best bartenders. We weren’t satisfied until it tasted and smelled and felt like the real thing.
Because we care what we put in our glass, our recipes are labors of love. Because we care what we put in our bodies, our flavors are all-natural with no allergens. Because we live on the planet, our packaging and shipping minimize waste. And because life is short, our company is still a group of friends. There are just more of us now. Here’s to friends clinking glasses — whatever may be in them.

Here's a short answer from a tequila aficionado with a discerning palate: Great substitution if what you want is a Spicy Margarita or Bloody Maria. (Think, traditional lime margarita with a slice of jalapeño).
The long answer: The nose is surprisingly and unmistakably tequila-esque. The Blue agave comes through recognizably, accompanied by bright vegetal notes of bell pepper and green juice, all balanced with a bit of sweetness that you might normally associate with vanilla.
Tasted neat, this is a fireball of fresh jalapeño mouth-burn that will leave your mouth and lips stinging for several minutes. There are vegetal, citrus, agave and peppercorn notes, but the overall lingering flavor is "capsicum fruit" (ie: a creative name for spicy peppers).
Chilled on ice, all flavors mellow significantly, including the heat, but the mouth burn is still the prevailing experience.
Mixed as a substitute in my standard margarita recipe, it's a fun addition to the bar in the event I'm looking for a spicy margarita and I'm glad it exists.
My take: If I ordered a spicy margarita at a bar/restaurant and this was served to me, I would 100% believe that it contained tequila. (granted, a light pour of Avion or the like). Do I love it? Nah. Do I hate it? definitely not. But I do think it's unfortunate that this isn't a more "universal" spirit substitute. If they'd just dial back the spicy pepper a bit, I'd use this a lot more often and to make various tequila-based cocktails. But in including such a high level of spice to this, they've already made the decision for me that anything I make with it will be spicy - an element I haven't historically turned to often. I wish that I could opt to add the spicy element myself by adding a slice of jalapeño.
That said... It gives you a watered down tequila flavor. Like it is quite amazing really!
I know it's meant to be drunk in a cocktail, but after the poor showing of the Gin, I had to try this neat.
I poured an ounce in a lowball and gave it a swirl.
It's not quite gold enough to be a Reposado.
It does smells like tequila though....
I gave it a taste. It's muted at first, floral, almost sweet.
then comes the wave of pepper and spice.
It's good lol, like I'm drinking the rest of the sip I poured and it's lovely.
If I didn't know this was a zero proof non-alcoholic tequila I almost couldn't tell the difference.
A great purchase and I'm excited to mix it into a margarita.
I highly recommend this for anyone who loves cocktails but doesn't want the boozy effects or the boozy calories. I felt zero guilt drinking this in the middle of my work day. To be fair, I feel zero guilt when I drink boozy cocktails in the middle of my workday, but at least today I was impeachable.
I also got the Ritual Gin Alternative, so when I have time to try that one out, I'll leave a review for that one as well.
Hope this review helps you decide!
The only saving grace is there are zero calories, sweeteners, or any of that.
Tried doing a straight shot, and felt worse than any of my early attempts at drinking at a younger age. Tried over ice, and it tasted like the same regret, with a hit of cold. Tried it in the recommended Paloma recipe, and felt like I wasted an off-brand grapefruit soda.
The label claims there are ten different flavors, and this is big part of the problem. You can taste each individual flavor separately, none of which made me remotely think “this kinda tastes like tequila” for a second, and for half of them, that’s definitely a very bad thing. The reason peaty flavors like charred or smoked woods work in good liquors is because it mellows into it, where it becomes pronounced without fighting to stand out. This tastes like they added half a bottle of liquid smoke.
Granted, when the fruits and floral notes kick in, it’s nice. But they get overpowered so quickly by this blast of black pepper with a charcoal chaser.
It tastes nothing like tequila. It doesn’t even come close to watered-down Mezcal. Imagine what Sunny D is to fresh-squeezed orange juice, add liquid smoke and a few peppercorns, and you’ll have a close approximation to how disappointing this is compared to real tequila.
I cannot stress this enough: just don’t do it. You would be better off paying someone $25 to slap the tastebuds out of your mouth.
And to the folks at Ritual: let me know if/when you come up with formula 2.0. There are serious improvements needed here and I would love to give it a second chance. But in its current state, I can’t even recommend this to anyone I want to see suffer.
