Serious Moonlight

High-powered attorney Louise (Meg Ryan) arrives at her country nest for a little R and R only to discover that her husband (Timothy Hutton) plans to leave her for a younger woman (Kristen Bell). Oddly cool, Louise plots to hold Ian captive until he commits to working on their marriage, but that's when things really start to go wrong. Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) skillfully directs Adrienne Shelly's (Waitress) wry and often hilarious script.

Serious Waste of Time

God, this was awful.
An absurdly ridiculous premise. I don't know why the two main actors would agree to do it. Sheer poppycock. As one other reviewer stated, I kept watching because I was convinced it would get better. After 15 minutes I resorted to scanning through to see if it was any more watchable. It wasn't and from what I could tell, only became more outrageous. If you like Meg And Tim . over the top scene munching, and want to waste an hour plus of your life, this is your ticket.

Tedious, violent, nothing of a movie
Verified purchase
Extremely stupid dialogue, unlikeable characters behaving in ridiculous, improbable ways. Painful to watch, a chore to endure the slow and dull dialogue. This should have been a 2 minute short story never made into a movie.

Spoilers: Unfaithful husband is attacked and held hostage by absurdly irrational wife. Wife is supposedly a successful attorney, yet is nuts enough to tie her husband up and act like a deranged 9 year old girl to try to keep him? He takes her back after that kind of violent, insane behavior? Wow, this is a bad movie, just a nothing of a story. Really bad storytelling.

Did the attorney win the case fairly?
Verified purchase
A very odd, quirky film. Manipulative. Disturbing. Revealing. And, darn funny, to boot!
It's the kind of movie for all kinds of reasons, hooks you. There you are watching, wondering, why in the heck am I sticking with this?

Ryan and Hutton - Great character studies! The robbers make you cringe. Happily ever after is deceiving.

Curious how much credit is due to the director rolling the camera with faith these actors will do their thing magnificently? Will the questions spoil the movie: Did the brilliant attorney wife set it all up? Was she out to win at all expense? Did she play fair? What length will people go to hold a marriage? Maybe, not the same as scripted, but the film begs introspection, what would you be wiling to do if faced with similar circumstances? What chance would there be for the husband's raw feelings to be revealed, had the drama not unfolded this way? Questions apply to the last scene. Four starts, becasue I watched it till the end.

Some reviewers believe this film is not worth the time of day. The last three minutes suggest otherwise. You decide.

Silly plot in my book
Verified purchase
Honestly, the best thing about this movie is Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton. Otherwise, the plot is stupid. I could not watch after five minutes into film. There has to be a level of believability—no matter how silly I have to be convinced. C'mon—your husband plans an elaborate meetup scattering flowers all over the house for someone else. Then the wife walks in and finds out the truth. She hits him in the head with a vase of flowers. Then ties him up with a skillful, I must say, bondage of duct tape. Dumb…I must say Timothy did not show much remorse in his character.

Not believable at all .. waste of good talent/actors ..

I want to giv this movie more stars but I cant .. timothy hutton always a favorite and meg ryan ok she seasoned plus kristen bell has a small role butt this movie overall just doesnt deliver .. all of the plot, scheme, dialogue etc is just .. bad fiction . the script is painfully absurd .. things are not developed to a level of substance .. I want the couple to "make it" but its just paltry attempts at reunification and theres not much feeling to it .. I read some other reviews and the ending that many hav complained about, to me, is the best, most honest and real part (though I had guessed it already) of the entire movie .. 2 1/2 stars (rounded up to 3 stars) is very generous and the bathroom "fighting" scenes are woefully horrible acting .. this screenplay was a decent idea with terrible writing and execution .. 3 stars for a film I just cant recommend ..

What if the roles were reversed?
Verified purchase
What if the roles were reversed? What if it was the husband who was never home, so wife is lonely and finds a lover and whats to leave and marry him. So husband duct tapes her to a toilet and keeps her hostage while she screams for help. Can you imagine the outrage in the reviews? So why is this okay in this movie because its the wife doing it? It isnt okay and isnt funny. But the acting was good and I liked it up until the gardener appeared, then it went downhill fast.

Loved this movie til the last second of the movie
Verified purchase
I would have given this movie a 5, I loved it until the very last second of the movie where he was surprised and shocked with his mouth hanging open.....he should have curled his mouth up into an all knowing smile and then kept walking. But noo he had to be upset by what she did where he should have thanked his lucky stars and been happy. That last second completely ruined what should have been an adorable romcom flick. Its obvious most who saw it felt the same, as I never heard of the dumb tick me off thing before.

Not the usual Meg Ryan special
Verified purchase
It started off promising. Movies on prime are mostly by unknowns on the Lifetime channel so it was good to see famous actors even though the premise was stupid. Why didn’t they get the stupid tape off? It was barely taped to the edge of the toilet? Ridiculous! And people keep mentioning a “twist” there’s no twist at all they seriously spend the whole movie in the bathroom and then three seconds out in town on the street and then see “someone” walking.
