I really enjoyed this movie
Verified purchase
I'm going to be honest, I really enjoyed this movie. OF COURSE, a lot of it is impossible. No shark would be that determined to get a human on a rock, but that is why it is a hollywood MOVIE, not an animal planet documentary. If you want realism, you wont find it in a shark movie so the reviews saying its bad because its "not realistic" need to go elsewhere to find that. ANYWAY, I was worried Blake Lively couldn't carry a movie by herself but she did really good. I don't think she gets enough credit. You will definitely be rooting for her and on the edge of your seat with this one.

In a sea (my big book of puns was handy) of bad shark movies, this one works.

In a sea (my big book of puns was handy) of bad shark movies, this one works.

This sort of plot you understand even before buying the DVD, if not... Just off-shore, a great white shark strands a girl on a rock. Simple. Most horror films are simple. What makes or breaks them is execution and this one is well executed.

The setting and filmography are first rate - this is a beautifully shot film. The special effects are terrific and the shark looks very real. The acting is solid as Blake Lively convinces as the film's hero. The villain (shark), again looks real, and is presented as the lurking terror that would scare anyone. The pace is steady and effective as the stakes continue to rise throughout.

This is a Hollywood monster movie so yes, the shark does a few things that are skeptically farfetched: knocks a whale twenty feet, catches on fire, bites through metal, and pursues a lone surfer like a vengeful stalker in a Lifetime movie. Most of those things I could also attribute to Jaws - so let's take it easy, lighten up, and not forget that we're watching a monster movie.

While this is not Jaws, this film contains enough to deliver what it should. A decent grab-the-popcorn, let's-take-scary-ride-and-be-entertained, what-if story.

Thrilling!!!

This has become one of my all time favorite movies. Far fetched . . . yes, and no. A similar situation happened to me in my younger years. This is a movie about survival, instincts and using your thought process to get out of a bad situation. I loved the cinematography, the storyline was interesting and Blake Lively really pulled this one off. If you love the ocean, are fascinated with sharks and surfing, you will really enjoy this thriller. Gripping and keeps you on your seat. I watch it over and over again.

Suspend your belief. Very different take on the genre.

Very different than all the other "man/woman vs shark" movies. It was very beautifully shot and very differently cinematography. Not gratuitous and pretty evenly paced. I probably wouldn't pick it for a Saturday night, but it was good for an afternoon when you are resting up or have a cold. Ok, so I don't know who Blake Lively is, maybe that means I'm old, but she was good.
And yes, 100% percent suspend your belief. No one would go trot off on their own without a 'check on me in 4 hrs' if I'm not back.

Really fun and well-made shark drama!

Up front: I admit it, I LOVE shark movies. I have ever since I was eleven and saw Jaws for the first time. That said, there have been a great many awful shark movies in the decades since then. Any time I hear about a new one coming out, I am hopeful but skeptical. I didn't know much about Blake Lively before this came out, so I wasn't sure she could carry the movie like she has to, but I was very pleasantly surprised. The movie itself is great - the plotline is somewhat plausible, if not totally believable, but this is a shark movie, so we should be parking our reality-checker pretty much at the door, anyway. I enjoyed the fast pace leading up to the initial girl-shark encounter and even enjoyed the slower-paced portion where she is just trying to figure out how to tend her wounds (thank goodness she's a med student!) and outwit the shark so she can survive. The filmography is beautiful - the location lends itself very well to the story, and the creature special effects are pretty darn good. Lots of reviewers question the fairly fantastical ending, and I concur that it just wouldn't happen in real life, but hey, it's a movie and it is both visually impressive and conclusive - no "did the shark survive?" here. I prefer that kind of ending, so I liked it.

One of the best shark movies I have ever seen

Great movie, great special effects. Shark looks REAL, not fake (for a change) and story and acting were superb. Only issue I had with the story, was this large shark has 4 tons of whale meat in front of it, but wants the skinny blonde instead. Theoretically, it made NO sense. They should have done this movie without the whale corpse nearby. Sharks are opportunistic and if they can feed without fight, that's what they do. Sharks also can only eat SO much. Three swimmers and a whale and he still wanted the skinny blonde???

Entertaining

Getting eaten by a shark is my worse fear. I grew up on the Pacific Ocean and was in the water whenever possible. But now that they have cleaned up the coastline the kelp has come back and so have the otters and seals, and the dreaded sharks. Anyway I forced myself to watch this to face the fear and it sorta worked. The film is so over the top with the great white stalking the surfer for days on end and annihilating anyone else who steps foot in the water, it kinda numbed me to the whole drama of a shark attack. The acting was good and the scenery beautiful. It was entertaining though unrealistic, which made it watchable for me.

Really Good

I really liked this movie. Blake lively pulled off her character well, I was on edge the entire time. They pulled off the shark being bloodthirsty (heh heh) and animalistic without giving it some crazy agenda. Beautiful scenery, touching moments, and it went through the psychological and emotional motions of a person desperate, tired, and hurting.
The filming was a bit shaky, but I think it only really bothered me in the beginning when there should have been more still shots. Lighting was excellent. Story was different. Kind of reminded me of Castway without the achingly long script with little to no climax. This was more thriller than drama. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was the shakiness in the beginning, and the character arc which was kind of typical. Brush over that, you'll be sure to enjoy it for the ride it is
