When I connected it "knew me", all my content was made immediately available, it was ready to use in a few minutes, Alexa working with the tablet, my blink security system viewing working, all working within minutes.
As for the tablet it is light weight, very snappy, the audio decently loud enough, Amazon' silk browser is pretty smooth. You can get YouTube on this device as well as Apple TV. The movie quality is excellent. Comes with HBOMAX (I am a subscriber) heck even comes with MS Office. I was able to log in ang get my OneNote up and running. Battery life is great like 8-10 hours with decent usage.
I am impressed with just how "tight" the operating system is. Like everything I need is at my finger tips, no waste. No constant scrolling or getting lost. It has exactly what I need, where as some tablets have lots of useless apps. I purchased a refurbished HD 8 Plus thinking that if it sucked then I didn't pay too much. I would have gladly paid full price. I own a iPad and it is a great tablet, but I am not part of the Apple ecosystem.
To conclude, I think the Amazon Fire has come a long way, for the price you can't really beat it. If you are all things Amazon as I described above, it is a no brainer if you are in the market for a tablet or something bigger than a phone ( I am not as young as I use to be so looking at things on my phone strains my eyes) it is a great option. The price is right as well. If your a power user and need to connect to every thing, and need great video recording and booming sound and all that, then look else where. However, if you need a mid size content provider that will not break your budget, then this just might be the tablet for you.
First off, even though I turned on location service, it keep moving me between my home and Seattle, WA. Hey, what's a couple of hundred miles, right?
Then, I received error messages every time I opened Yahoo mail and some of the games I enjoy playing on the Kindle.
Gmails opened from the bottom, so I had to scroll up to see the beginning of the messages. Not fun when someone sends you a joke and you see the punchline right off the bat.
I've purchased other refurnished items from Amazon, including the desktop I'm composing this review on, so I'm not averse to getting something used. This time, however, it was a dud.
First unit I got was running Fire OS 188.8.131.52 with 184.108.40.206 pending.
The OS update was Queued but after about 3 hours was still not downloaded.
Another problem: apps were also queued but never downloaded.
So back she went to replacement.
Second unit arrived; this was running Fire OS 220.127.116.11 with 18.104.22.168 pending.
(This one did download apps.)
BUT...after four hours the OS had still not started downloading.
I finally gave up on using Fire System update and downloaded the Update package to my PC, copied it to the Fire and the update was done in about 15 minutes.
I don't know if this a "feature" of Refurbished Fire tablets or is a problem that might be showing up on new tablets.
It needs investigating! Are you listening Amazon Tech?????
Further investigation with third (new) Fire HD Plus. This arrived with Fire OS 22.214.171.124 with 126.96.36.199 Pending. It also did not download. I've been using my phone Hot Spot for OS updates (it works for Android, IOS (IPad) and Windows). BUT it goes into some weird hibernation state with this Fire tablet. I tried the update on a regular WiFi network which worked like a charm. This only seems to fail with this tablet on a hot spot connection (hot spot was T-mobile, android 10, in case you care to investigate Amazon tech???). I have not had this problem with older Fire tablets or Amazon ereaders. Could be just this particular Fire or it may be affecting the current generation of Fire tablets.
(The cheap work around is to update via a regular WiFi hub, or download to a PC, and transfer to the Fire, but the latter is a bit messy).
