Disappointing
I really wish this show would have followed closer to the book. Especially with the characters. No one was sexually confused in the books... and in the show they are. It was really weird. It makes it so you don't understand the characters any longer, when you read the book you feel like you get to know them. Then you watch the show and you don't know who these people are. I was so excited to watch the show! I had a countdown on my phone! Then I watch the show and just feel extreme disappointment. It makes me a bit sad. It had a lot of potential until it was ruined by changing things too much.

Soapy Garbage
I thought this would be a sweet, coming of age summer show, but I was mistaken. There is nothing wholesome or virtuous about “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” which is unfortunate because the concept was promising. Some of the main characters (including adults) are shown smoking weed and getting drunk. There is a sexually loose/promiscuous mentality propagated by the young adults. One of Belly’s male friends (her main love interest), Conrad, is a narcissistic, weed-smoking jerk. Belly makes foolish decisions and doesn’t appear to learn much from her errors. The kids can be quite mean to each other. Complete garbage.

Must Watch!
The soundtrack alone for this show deserves 5 stars, not to mention the great story line.

If you’ve never read the books it’d possibly be a higher rating
I read these books every summer from eighth grade to my senior year of college and reread the series in excitement for this series debut!
I binged all 7 eps in one sitting and for the most part I genuinely loved it—but yes I love cheesy teen rom-coms and amateur acting doesn’t bother me one bit. What did knock the rating down a peg or two for me is the unnecessary character changes among primary characters. I am honestly appalled by some of the other lower star reviews being so rude and belittle to the LGBTQ+ community, but I do agree that altering a main characters sexuality will have a negative impact on the development of the series aligning with the book storyline. I think the goal of ensuring LGBTQ+ identifying members feel seen and represented could have been accomplished by adding another character to the mix. Shayla was added as a primary character, I think it could’ve been a perfectly smooth addition to add another member to their group who fit the billet of highlighting inclusivity as a cultural norm without altering a pre-established character whose sexuality and relational commitment to a childhood crush is pivotal in the progression of the storyline. Overall though the major themes carried pretty accurately from the books and like I said: if you’ve never read the books this is probably a 5/5 great, summer love, high school drama watch.

Book come to life
This book series was my middle school savior. I am so glad that it has been put to screen and they kept all the parts of the book that made the series special. Plus, the soundtrack is AMAZING. LOVE IT!!!
