Love the series! Don't like the new music track.
Verified purchase
Don't get my rating wrong. I LOVE the series and am still watching it in season 12 on broadcast television. I rate it as a 5; but in the Amazon version the music track is different from the original and DVD's. I don't know if they felt the needed to modernize it or what. The music track is a big part of why I like the show so much as the producers matched music to various scenes and themes flawlessly. In the online version there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the music chosen. I'd highly recommend getting the DVD from Prime versus the streaming version.

Classic good writing and great young actors

As I understand it, when the story was first written, it was centered on only one character, Sam. That's why J2 both audited for Sam at the beginning, because Dean as the character we know today did not really exist yet. It was after they got J2 that they (thanks Robert Singer!) saw the great potential between the two actors and tweaked the show to be the story of two brothers as equals. The script was a work of progress the whole season, because they had to split and remake many scenes from Sam to build the story of Dean.

In season one I can feel that split, but not in any later seasons. Actually it confused me at first, because many scenes involving Dean felt forced, they should have naturally gone to Sam, and I did not understand why, until I read the production stories, about how the script would keep changing until the last minute, then it all made sense. Again, thank you so much for the effort!

That is to me what made season 1 so perfect. The story line was flawless, especially the Pilot, I teach my kids about writing using it as an go-to example. And all the imperfections, kind of still showing the inner process of a creation, gives me so much more to decipher, and I love it.

I chose/ordered the mulitformat hoping it would be dvd + blu-ray... But expected it to only be blu-ray + a digital download code for digital HD copy. To my surprise and disappointment, it is ONLY blu-ray. I don't know if there is any difference between this (mulitformat) option and the blu-ray option. Guessing one of them is a re-release. Will be keeping but still very disappointed it is not as described.

Brothers hunt ghouls who go bump in the night

Supernatural is a very entertaining series. I first caught the show sometime during the third or fourth season (the show where the brothers Dean and Sam Winchester are placed in an alternate reality where they don't know one another -- Dean is a corporate executive and Sam is a custodian in the same building) and became hooked after viewing that single episode. Now I've decided to go back and start watching the series from the initial episode.

The theme has pretty much remained the same: Dean is the older brother, more of a wisecrack and passionate about killing supernaturals while Sam is the younger brother, no less passionate about the "family business" but more reflective about what is being killed and why. The first episode draws Sam back into the family fold after Dean shows up and says "Dad has gone hunting and hasn't returned." Sam is away at college and preparing to sit for his pre-law school exams. He reluctantly joins Dean and, by the episode's end, a tragic event forces Sam to abandon post-secondary education and return to the life that he tried to escape.

The catalyst for their lifestyle occurred when Dean was young and Sam just an infant. One night their mother is burned alive while pinned to the ceiling by a supernatural invader who invaded Sam's nursery. Their father tells Dean to take Sammy to safety and from that point on, as you learn in flashbacks, John Winchester is determined to find and kill the monster responsible for his wife's death. While Dean never questions his father's actions, Sam is troubled by them and ultimately has a falling out with his father right before Sam leaves for college.

The two main characters bicker and disagree just like brothers do in real life. Of course, there is an added element of tension because these two brothers are in the family business of killing demons, shape shifters, reapers, vampires, etc. But the dialogue is entertaining, there is often an element of comedy in each episode, and the love between the two brothers comes through despite their differences. Their father makes an occasional appearance and while you don't doubt he loves his sons, Dad's personality is a little off-putting. Still, he is the catalyst for the tension between Dean and Sam: Dean is the obedient son (until he isn't) who never questions his father and Sam is the rebel (until he isn't) who wants to know the reason behind their father's reclusiveness and his desire to keep his sons in the dark. And just like real brothers, their attitudes towards, and obedience to, their father changes depending on the circumstances.

The show can be violent and as the episodes progress, they appear to get bloodier and gorier but not in every episode. The brothers meet many people on their travels across the country (they constantly live in motels, using fake credit cards to pay for rooms, gas and food), but cannot be open and honest about why they appear at crime scenes. They are experts at portraying undercover police officers, FBI agents and medical doctors, which explains their presence after grisly killings, mystery illnesses, or unexplained disappearances. The season finale is a true cliffhanger and the viewer will want to know what happens to the Winchester men. Five stars!

Supernaturally Good

The New York Times calls this series "Genuinely scary". Sam Winchester is a young man with a promising future or...so he thought. He was thrown into a nightmare world at a young age and must hunt evil beings just to survive! He only wants to live a normal life but he cannot. His brother Dean shows up one day with bad news that their dad, a hunter of evil, is missing. He must now join his brother to hunt down the beings responsible. This is an edgy, hip, and cool levels of popular series that is thrilling people, consumer and professional, to this day. Very good special effects(for a TV show; not as good as say Star Wars or Transformers) and sometimes downright horrific imagery. This is my favorite occult/horror/action TV show ever made and it is cool to see some of the places I live near in the U.S. Midwest mentioned as their current location(s) while hunting everything from vampires, werewolves, and demons. In the later seasons, this show gets EPIC with storylines that feature things like Micheal vs Satan, the fall of Heaven, the fall of the angels, and Sam being possessed by Lucifer! The boys make strange and unwise alliances with everyone from Castiel their guardian angel who becomes God then loses it(in every way) to Crowley, Satan's replacement when Michael disappears with him into "the pit". You will recognize some stars on this show in later seasons such as Snooki, the guy who plays Crowley, and many others. This show is awesome!

if I didn't like it, I'd just give it to her

When my friend introduced me to this series I was skeptical. I figured I'd go ahead and buy season one and then, if I didn't like it, I'd just give it to her. Well... Halfway through season one I was online purchasing all of the rest of the available seasons (it was during season five at the time) and I'm happily enjoying season thirteen as it currently airs. Best purchase ever.

Definitely of the Era!
Verified purchase
This boxed set was definitely an older one, but the DVDs are in perfect condition! Due to the early 2000s, the audio mixing is kind of weird, so you can't always hear every part of the dialogue, and for some reason there aren't English subtitles, which bothers me. It's definitely of the era, so I'm not going to blame anyone except for the early 2000s. Technology has progressed a lot since then, so if you want really high quality I'd opt for the Blu-Ray version. If you're mostly buying it to collect all the seasons like me, it should be fine!

A decent but at times shaky start.

The show was still finding its direction during this season, which is very much "monster of the week". In that sense, it worked better than the re-imagined "Night Stalker" whose creator looked at the original and then did something else. Later seasons improve; the show is still airing nearly a decade later. This season is good for establishing much of the lore of the series, which will be revisited in the future. It also establishes the Dean and Sam dynamic.
