Viewing from 2017, SO FASCINATING

Look, at the time I'm writing this review there are 33 seasons of the show so clearly it has made an impact. As an Amazon Prime member I would put this into the "must watch" category along with the first 3 seasons of Breaking Bad, True Blood, and a few other TV shows. Watching this first season is like watching a well produced case study of American morality in the year 2000.
We have Colleen, Greg and quite a few others arguing that certain game tactics are immoral and game-breaking.
We have Rudy, Rich and Sue who adapt to the game and rely on unity to get where they want to go.

Regardless of who get's voted out week by week it is certainly entertaining to go back and watch the iconic beginning to a series which has been a part of an American revolution (now evident more than ever in January 2017).
This season was filmed before every American viewer could easily imagine their "character" on-screen and social dynamics in everyday life were changed by the idea that any ordinary life/person may end up providing entertainment or examples for others.

YOU SHOULD GO BACK AND WATCH THIS IF YOU HAVE TIME

I liked it!

As a Survivor fan, I had never seen Season 1. It was fascinating to watch and see all the differences and the mistakes that Jeff Prost and the producers made back them. They were really in uncharted territory and I found it refreshing and human.
As a warning, it is slower than what I am used to and the production value of most tasks were of a much lower budget.
The most fascinating aspect of this season is the internal struggle of EVERYBODY except Richard Hatch concerning the morality and ethics of an alliance.

Is 17yrs long enough to be called a 'throw-back' ?

I had never seen the 1st season -- definitely a good primer to see how the show started. When it took 6 guys to unload a 'reward' crate off of the boat, I feel out when the opened it up!!! makes you realize how far we've come technology wise in 17yrs. And SO GLAD Jeff learned to read the votes a little quicker-- what was that, dramatic pause? I don't know if watching the first season at the time would have hooked me or not, but I am a fan of the show now. I would recommend watching, even if you already knows who wins, it's interesting to see how they got there. I do believe it set some concepts in place that continue to be used to this day.

I've been writing to Amazon support on a regular basis saying PLEASE get the early seasons of Survivor on Amazon Instant Video and got pretty much a standard response every time but I guess they are listening! Kind of a weird order they're going in, starting with season 3 Africa then releasing Season 1 Borneo after, but as long as they get them all I'll be happy. Haven't watched it all yet, but the video from what I have seen looks very good and I'm looking forward to seeing it on my Kindle and Fire TV! Can't wait for Australian Outback, hopefully soon, and the rest soon after!

The Best of the Reality Shows
Verified purchase
Survivor is a program I both love and hate. It is a game, but the human interactions are real and more interesting than scripted dramas. Like human nature, it is not always pretty. The first season of Survivor was the only one that I had completely missed. It was interesting to see how it started and how Jeff Probst has grown as a host. This is a series of thirteen 45 minute programs, so spread them out over several days. In my opinion, Survivor is the best of the reality shows.

the birth of a phenomenon

It's great to see the first ever series of Survivor and boy has it evolved! Series 1 has an innocent feel to it, the challenges are less complicated, as are the production values, and the lack of overtly gorgeous young people is refreshing. These days Survivor seems much more produced, more manicured, more orchestrated. This first season is fresh, fun, in many ways more entertaining.

Ground zero on how to use alliances in the game.
Verified purchase
I realized this show set up future players strategies on how to stay longer in the game. Finally when Gervase realized an alliance was formed, he and the others could not stop them from picking off each member of his tribe. Survivor 1 was very entertaining as well as frustrating on how players hoped for the best and left their fates for others to decide.
