5.0 out of 5 stars Great Job TP-Link!!
By Jacob F. on January 5, 2018
Finally, a 3-way smart switch by TP-Link!!! I have waited for these for quite some time now and bought a set the first day they became available. This is my 30th TP-Link smart switch/plug and they never disappoint!!

The HS210 3-way switch kit was very easy to install using the Kasa app. It walks you through the step by step installation all the way down to reminding you to take a picture of all labeled wires before you disconnect the old switches. Configuration to your Wifi network is a breeze, just like their standard single pole smart switch. Obviously, there are a few more steps involved given it sets up both switches within the same process, one at a time. I have lots of practice using their setup app so it only took 10 mins tops to compete.

I installed it in the same switch box together with a single pole TP Link switch and will say that it’s a challenge to get everything to fit. Extra wires along with the large backs on these things make for little room. I didn’t connect the ground wires to save some space, just cut it short and taped it off.

My only complaint is that the white circle light on the switch itself is dimmer than the standard switches so if you’re picky like me it doesn’t look uniform, especially if installed next to each other.

I’ll be purchasing these sets for the rest of my 3-ways. Definitely happy with the product!!

First picture attached is next to a single pole TP-Link and second is next to standard switch (not a smart switch).

4.0 out of 5 stars Know your wires, or find handyman
Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2019
I had never taken apart a 3-way light switch before, and it wasn’t immediately clear what was going on in the box. Once I figured it out everything works perfectly, and I am using each one in two separate rooms rather than installing both of them for the same light. All functionality works perfectly, both manually and with the Kasa app, for both lights when the switches are installed on seperate circuits.

In my photo, one black cable was hot (the line) and that’s connected to the black screw labelled line/load. The other black and the red are the travellers. On my other circuit the travellers were red and white. Some tips...

1) Install both to control the same lighy only if having matching switches is important. They look very similar to the switches I already had, so this wasn’t important for me at all. You absolutely only need to use one smart switch per circuit.

2) Power only goes to one light switch. I installed them on the switch that had a power coming to it.

3) You can find which one has power (is hot) by disconnecting all cables from both switches, and use a multimeter to test each cable. Only one, on one side, will be hot. It’s best to turn the breaker off before detaching the switches, and then turn it back on to find the hot one. It should be one of the black ones.

4) To be sure which are the two travelers, again with the breaker off, you can use a wire or something to connect all of the cables together in the box with the hot cable, then go over to the other side and again use the multimetre and both travellers will be hot.

5) The cable on the other side that is not hot at this point will be the one that goes off to the load, which in this case are the lights. It will probably also be black.

6) Back in the box with the hot cable coming from the breaker, connect the hot wire to the black screw of the smart switch, and the two travellers to the two travellers screws.

7) This could’ve been tip one, but you need a neutral to connect to or it won’t work. This is required so there is a circuit always delivering some power to control the electronics in the smart switch. It will work if you connect neutral to ground, but this is not recommended at all. Connecting the ground to the ground is optional, but recommended.

8) Reconnect all cables to the original dumb switch on the other side. The load should connect to its black screw. If it has a neutral, and you want to use both smart switches on the same circuit, then go right ahead.

9) Take a couple of clear pictures of both switches BEFORE disconnecting any cables so you can be sure to put it back as it was. You could’ve also added labels (included in the box) as you confirmed what each cable was.

10) When setting it up in the app, after you have configured the smart switch following the instructions, just click next/done a couple times to tell it you did the other one, on the other side, when you actually didn’t.

11) Install the second switch on another 3way circuit of your choice

12) To work with Google Home/Alexa, you need to turn on remote control in the device settings using the Kasa app. This is because Google talks to your TP link account in the cloud to control the lights.

Final note: It really is too bad they don’t sell these in packages with only one for people who might want to only install one on a single circuit . Their included information could also clarify that each switch could be used on separate circuits. I hope these tips help someone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful for hall and stair with 3-way switch
Reviewed in Canada on May 8, 2018
[[ASIN:B07724HNTX TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch for 3-Way Lighting -- No Hub Required, Works with Alexa and Google Assistant (HS210 KIT)]] If you are looking at this, it is very likely that already have some kind of smart switch at home and it is more likely that they are from TP-Link as well. I purchased the HS200 and HS210 and this review is for HS210. Great product and the make is good. As suggested by other reviewers, you can actually use this for 2 different locations. The product comes with two 3-way switches, and some people might want to install both on the same location. However, I chose to do it differently like I said because buying two set of this can be very expensive. All thanks to those reviewers, I just successfully installed this for my hall way and my stairs (Yes, only one for each location.) You may wonder what happen to the other switch that I did not install the smart switch. It will just work perfectly fine. It will work exactly with either switch on and off so you don't need to worry about performance being affected. Now, I can use voice control or my cellphone to control both locations inside or outside my home. Sweet eh?

5.0 out of 5 stars A good, reliable set of 3-way smart switches!
Reviewed in Canada on December 29, 2020
Been using the 3-way switches for more than a year now and they have worked flawlessly. Here are some pros & cons:

Pros:
- For a circuit where there are only two 3-way switches, you can split the set & just use one of the Kasa 3-way switches in one circuit, and the other in a separate ciruit.
- Reliable, have not had any disconnection issues that were not related to the router having issues.
- No requirement for connection to a separate hub.
- Has scheduling & timer functions, as well as duration of use logs.
- Works with IFTTT, Google & Alexa.
- Labels for wires, two single gang faceplates, and wire nuts & screws are included.

Cons:
- Must use a 2.4GHz wifi connection. Would be nice if it also supported 5GHz wifi.
- Electrical box must have a neutral wire.
- The switch is bulky, and squeezing all the wires into the electircal box can be a bit challenging.

So far, I have been able to successfully install (5 instances) just one of the switches in circuits where there are only two 3-way switches. The one time where it did not work correctly was when the circuit had two 3-way & one 4-way; the single Kasa 3-way was not able to correctly determine the status of the light (on or off), and if you toggled it (either manually or via app) when it was wrong, the light will still switch but you would get the opposite result. Presumably, it might have work correctly if I had installed both Kasa switches, but I did not try it.

Note: Always identify & label the common & traveller wires prior to removing the existing switch! The only times I had issues installing the switches was when I had the wires mixed up!

Rating: 5 stars
