COMPASSION: understanding others’ feelings, needs, or hardships and attempting to help them
Students need to be reminded to show compassion. Many of our students face difficult hardships that we do not always see or hear about. I have found that if I am a positive role model, while it helps, it is not always enough.
My compassion unit focuses on not only what makes us compassionate, but making us AWARE of compassionate initiatives.
Most students are typically unaware of sadness or loneliness that is around them. They tend to stick to their group of friends, unaware of others’ feelings or thoughts.
I have created this compassion unit as part of a year-long curriculum for teaching students all about not only being compassionate, but the compassion that surrounds them. It is my hope that you will find the necessary tools here that help your students show, feel and know how important it is to understand compassion in life.
You do not need to teach everything, nor do you need to teach it all at once. The activities, lessons, ideas, and games in this unit can be spread throughout the school year.
