With the insane prices on pure vanilla extract these days, I thought I would save a few bucks and try a imitation. This one was so highly rated, I though it would be a safe choice. HUGE MISTAKE. If you're used to pure vanilla, don't use this project. It has a pretty strong chemically taste, notable in a batch of cookies where I only used 1/2tsp.

We have been using this product for years and always bought from supermarkets like Walmart. Went a few weeks back again to buy from the supermarket, however, it was out of stock and hence ended up checking on Amazon. Glad that I did check here. Bigger bottle for almost the same price which I was always purchasing for a small bottle. Coming to the product, my 2 cents below:

- Pure fragrance vanilla extract that works great for baking and even in smoothies
- Clear and color free and so helps in keeping the bakery in the naturally desired color

The fact that this bottle of Watkins vanilla is clear, bothered someone who asked a question about it being colorless. And when I read their concern, it was power of suggestion for me too - ("Oh, right. Will it be as good as brown vanilla?")

A verified purchaser assured that the clear was just as good as the Watkins brown vanilla, so I bought it. Glad I did! I use a lot of vanilla, and to get such a large bottle, of Watkins (the best!) this was a great deal. So much better than cheaper brands.

Don't let the colorless bother you! You can't get this much vanilla flavor for such a low price. Try it, you'll like it.

I orderd 3 of these, because I bake all the time for my huge family. The vanilla is mild, flavorful, and doesn't discolor frostings. When opening the bottle, the first thing that hits you is the smell, which is wonderful. It is so different than the real vanilla, which can have bitter notes in smell and taste. Wakins products always seem to be such high quality. I'm so happy with this product and the way it's worked in my baking.
Special note:
When I received my package, I had one bottle that was missing a cap, and leaked a little bit. However, this great company promptly (by promptly, I received it the next day); sent me another bottle and told me not to worry about sending back the bottle with the missing cap. I highly recommend this vanilla and this wonderful "best customer service" company!

Upon opening the bottle, a *powerful* chemical/anti-freeze aroma lifted itself into the air and into my disgusted nose. Just to make sure I wasn't imagining the horror, I put a few drops on my finger to taste. Turns out I wasn't imagining the horror. I then inflicted it on my husband, who has a limited sense of smell and taste. He sure managed to smell and taste this foul liquid, though. At that point I dumped it all down to the drain, with apologies to any aquatic wildlife that may encounter it.

I feel like a dope, having ordered this without checking closely enough to make sure this was natural vanilla instead of this man-made garbage. I wish that I knew what these 4/5 star reviewers are tasting because it's impossible to believe it's this hell juice.

Order at your peril.

I miss real vanilla but at current prices it’s either stop baking or use artificial. This is a good brand for artificial and with our big family we use a bottle like this every other month or so. It’s strong and I’m able to use exactly what the recipe calls for and get a nice vanilla flavor whereas I would normally have to add a bit extra with natural extract. It’s nice for frosting too if I want it to be a pure bright white color I can use this and shortening rather than butter and real vanilla which makes a yellowish color.

This clear vanilla is wonderful if you want to have super vanilla flavor plus maintain the whiteness of frosting or any other recipe which calls for vanilla. Their regular vanilla is also a great value, as you use much less than the cheap brands. Makes a unique gift for the chefs in your life!
